Virginia Republicans Nominate Anti-Reproductive Health Extremist Yesli Vega to Face Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger
With the likely overturn of Roe v. Wade this summer,
Virginians cannot afford leaders who support banning abortion
Richmond, Va – On Tuesday, Virginia Republicans in the 7th Congressional District chose from half a dozen extremely anti-abortion candidates to be the Republican nominee against Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger. From her comments on the campaign trail, it’s clear that Vega will side with Republican colleagues like Congressman Bob Good, who endorsed her campaign, in supporting federal legislation to completely outlaw abortion. According to a recent Roanoke College poll, 88% of Virginians believe that abortion should be legal under some or all circumstances.
Jamie Lockhart, Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia said:
“The people of Virginia’s 7th Congressional District deserve a representative who will protect their freedom to make their own reproductive health care decisions. Yesli Vega’s commitment to seeing Roe v. Wade overturned should be alarming to voters as we await the Supreme Court’s decision in a case that will likely decimate access to safe, legal abortion in states across the country. Overturning Roe means 26 states could swiftly move to ban abortion – including 13 states with laws that could immediately go into effect.
The contrast between Congresswoman Spanberger and Vega could not be more clear. Voting for the Women’s Health Protection Act, Abigail Spanberger has been a vocal supporter of the reproductive rights of all Americans. The Republican nominee is out of touch with the views of the 7th Congressional District and would take our country backward. Yesli Vega called Justice Alito’s leaked draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade “an amazing victory” and has made clear that she will never support a person’s right to make their own health care decisions.
For Virginians in the 7th Congressional District who support abortion rights, the obvious choice is Planned Parenthood Action Fund-endorsed candidate Abigail Spanberger.”
