UPDATE 8:40 pm – Potomac Local just called it for Weir. Republican hold.

UPDATE 8:30 pm – With 16 of 17 precincts reporting in Prince William County, it’s now Weir (R) up 60.4%-39.4% over Sumers (D). Still waiting for early/absentee votes, but it’s gonna be tought for Sumers…

UPDATE 8:26 pm – McClellan now at 72.1% of the vote with 272 of 302 precincts in. Incredibly impressive victory!

UPDATE 8:13 pm – With 12 of 17 precincts in Prince William County reporting, Weir’s up 62.6%-37.2%. Still no early/absentees reporting.

UPDATE 8:01 pm – Now at 9 of 17 precincts in Prince William County, with Weir up 2,346 (65.0%) – Sumers 1,261 (34.9%). Still no early/absentee votes reported.

UPDATE 7:48 pm – With 6 of 17 precincts reporting in Prince William County, it’s now Weir 1,868 (66.7%)-Sumers 929 (33.2%). Keep in mind that no absentee votes have been reported yet, and that those should go pretty strongly Democratic. We’ll see…

UPDATE 7:43 pm – With 197 of 302 precincts reporting in VA04, Jennifer McClellan’s now at 69.5%, with tons more to come from super-blue Richmond City. So it’s highly likely she’ll break 70%, which would be great to see, considering that Donald McEachin won last November 65%-35%, also over Leon Benjamin.

UPDATE 7:37 pm – With 3 of 17 precincts reporting in Prince William County’s Gainesville district special election, it’s Republican Bob Weir 940 (73.6%) – Democrat Kerensa Sumers 338 (26.5%).

UPDATE 7:33 pm – Obviously, VA04 was over before it ever began, but for the record, AP called it for Jennifer McClellan – history made! 🙂 Also, for the record, with 165 of 302 precincts reporting, McClellan’s now at 69.1%, with plenty to go from super-blue Richmond City.

UPDATE 7:22 pm – Still waiting for results from Prince William County. As for VA04, with 124 of 302 precincts reporting, Jennifer McClellan is up 68.2%-31.8%. Edging closer to 70%!

UPDATE 7:18 pm – With 86 of 302 precincts reporting in VA04, Jennifer McClellan is up 67.6%-32.3%. McClellan’s obviously going to win and become Virginia’s first-ever African-American Congressman! 🙂 Still hoping she’ll hit 70%.

UPDATE 7:12 pm – With 39 of 302 precincts reporting in VA04, Jennifer McClellan is up 66.9%-33.0%. Can she hit 70%?  Go McClellan!

Polls closed at 7 pm in the two special elections today in Virginia – for the VA04 U.S. House seat vacated due to the untimely death of then-Rep. Donald McEachin (Democrat Jennifer McClellan vs. Republican Leon Benjamin); and for the Prince William Board of County Supervisors Gainesville district seat (Democrat Kerensa Sumers vs. Republican Bob Weir – see here for more on this race). Expectations are that Jennifer McClellan will win by a big margin, the only question being HOW big (65%-35%? 70%-30%?) and that the Gainesville district race could be close. Stay tuned, and of course check out the Virginia Department of Elections site for official results, which should start coming in shortly!
