Check out the new ad from VA05 Democratic nominee Tom Perriello’s campaign. Given the national political environment, which appears to be trending strongly blue, and also the fact that Rep. John McGuire (R-VA05) is a total f’ing disaster as a Congressman, plus Tom Perriello being a former Congressman and a strong candidate, I’m starting to really think that VA05 could be winnable…maybe Lean R at this point, but wouldn’t be shocking of Perriello pulled a huge upset on election night November 3? To quote “Captain Jean-Luc Picard” from Star Trek: “MAKE IT SO!”

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — Today, Tom Perriello’s Congressional campaign launched its second TV ad of the general election for Virginia’s 5th Congressional District. The spot, entitled “Piling On,” shows the crushing consequences of Congressman John McGuire’s votes for higher taxes, higher gas and grocery prices, and a 50-75% hike in health insurance premiums.
“Folks around here deserve a Congressman with some common sense. McGuire has offered nothing but more taxes, insane prices for gas and groceries, and insurance costs that force families to play health care roulette,” said Perriello. “Every week, Virginians are bleeding $100 from their wallets to cover McGuire’s decisions to put corporate lobbyists ahead of the lives of people he is meant to serve.”
“Piling On” will air in local media markets and on streaming services. In the ad, cinder blocks representing the burdensome costs are dropped on a home, crushing it under their weight.
McGuire has supported policies that cost local families $2500 from increased tariffs, over $1200 from inflation caused by the war in Iran, and a 50-75% rise in insurance premiums due to his vote for H.R. 1. All in, this McGuire Tax costs local families $100 every week, while adding over $7 trillion to the federal debt.
“We simply cannot afford two more years of the McGuire Tax that costs folks thousands of dollars that we cannot afford,” said Perriello. “When I get to Congress, I will bring down costs on day one by ending the trade wars and foreign wars, and put those dollars back into our communities.”
While McGuire has prioritized his dark money corporate donors, Perriello refuses money from lobbyists and corporate PACs. In Congress, Perriello focused on delivering economic relief to every family in Virginia, every school district in Virginia, and every law enforcement unit in Virginia. While McGuire has voted to close rural clinics and push 750,000 Americans off of health insurance, Tom fought to expand rural health services and add 30 million Americans to the health care coverage.
