ICYMI: AZ, PA, and VA Lawmakers Held Press Call to Commemorate One Year Without Roe, Launch Partnership to Elect Democrats to State Legislatures
RICHMOND, VA — Today, Democratic Lawmakers from Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Virginia hosted a press call to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, and to kick off a collaborative effort across three states to elect pro-choice Democratic majorities to their state legislatures. Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Arizona are the three states where upcoming elections are most likely to affect abortion access for millions of people. Lawmakers highlighted the importance of state legislatures in the fight for reproductive freedom and the need for Democratic majorities to protect abortion access.
Pennsylvania House Democratic Caucus Administrator Leanne Krueger said, “Later last year… we were able to elect a one seat majority committed to defending choice and to expanding access to reproductive health care. Now, since November, we’ve had to defend that majority in four special elections… Our voters here in Pennsylvania know that majorities matter… So, as we look to 2024, we know that protecting and expanding our Democratic majority here in the state house is the only way to protect access to reproductive health care here in Pennsylvania and we’re committed to fighting as hard as we need to to make sure that people’s rights are not rolled back here in Pennsylvania.”
Virginia House Democratic Caucus Chair Charniele Herring said, “We’re excited to partner with our colleagues in Arizona and Pennsylvania to build momentum for Democratic wins at the state level that will help ensure we protect access to reproductive health care for millions of people. We’ve seen what Republicans have done in the past to restrict abortion access in Virginia. The only way to stop the GOP’s agenda from becoming law and to help us protect the fundamental rights of all Virginia families is to continue to elect Democrats committed to taking up this fight and taking back the House this November.”
“Democrats in the General Assembly are the only people standing between Virginians and an abortion ban similar to the ones we’ve seen across the country. Like North Carolina was, Virginia is one election away from banning access to abortion. And that election is this November…That’s why we’re excited to partner with our colleagues in Arizona and Pennsylvania – where abortion rights are also on the line in upcoming elections – to build momentum for Democratic wins at the state level that will help ensure we protect access to reproductive health care for millions of people,” said Virginia Senate Democratic Caucus Chair Mamie Locke.
“There hasn’t really been a more critical time for families across the country and I know that in Arizona, we are closer than ever to restoring that right to choose. Both the House and the Senate Democrats are in a one-seat minority in both chambers, so just flipping two seats in the House and two seats in the Senate could fundamentally change the outlook for millions of Arizonans’ reproductive rights and freedoms,” said Arizona Senate Minority Whip Eva Burch.
