RICHMOND – Congressman A. Donald McEachin (VA-04) issued this statement in response to the creation of the Presidential Commission on Election Integrity announced by President Trump:
“Experts have repeatedly said that voter fraud is vanishingly rare; it poses no systematic threat to our democracy. President Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey, on the other hand, endangers one of the cornerstones of our democracy – public confidence that the justice system is independent, apolitical, and beyond reproach. This commission is a cynical distraction from the administration’s own misdeeds, but I am committed to keeping my eye on the ball.
“The president’s lies about ‘massive voter fraud’ are deeply corrosive and deeply irresponsible, and we do not need a commission to investigate claims that experts and fact-checkers agree are utterly baseless. Less than two days after President Trump was excoriated by both Democrats and Republicans for firing the FBI director, the Administration needs a distraction from calls for the truth and suddenly pivots to this commission. One cannot help but wonder if the real reason for today’s executive order is simply to get the Trump-Russia investigation out of the news headlines.
“Americans deserve better than this. We need an independent commission or a special prosecutor to provide a thorough, honest, transparent and expeditious independent investigation of the president’s and his team’s ties to Russia to restore Americans’ faith in democracy. We don’t need another corrosive distraction.”
