UPDATE 5/25: Final results
With the Virginia Democratic primary for VA01 in just over five weeks, who do you support? The choices are Vangie Williams, who was the 2018 Democratic nominee (losing to Rep. Rob Wittman in November by 10 points (55%-45%); and Qasim Rashid, who was the Democrats’ nominee for State Senate in SD28 last year, losing to Sen. Richard Stuart in November by 15 points (57%-42%). To get a feel for these candidates, see Video, Highlights: Fredericksburg Area Candidate Forum with VA-01 Democratic Candidates Qasim Rashid and Vangie Williams and Video: VA01 Dem Candidates Vangie Williams, Qasim Rashid Debate Their Positions on the Issues, Why They’d Be the Strongest to Defeat Rep. Rob Wittman (R) in November.
As for VA01, the district is made up of parts or all of: Prince William County (21.56% of the district’s voters), Stafford County (17.54%), Hanover County (14.58%), James City County (8.27%), Gloucester County (5.05%), Spotsylvania County (4.22%), Caroline County (3.71%), Fredericksburg City (3.18%), King George County (3.12%), New Kent County (2.98%), Westmoreland County (2.28%), King William County (2.26%), Fauquier County (1.93%), Northumberland County (1.75%), Lancaster County (1.57%), Middlesex County (1.46%), Essex County (1.40%), Mathews County (1.27%), Richmond County (0.95%), King & Queen County (0.92%). The district went for Corey Stewart over Tim Kaine by 2 points in 2018, and for Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton by 15 points in 2016, so…it’s a tough one for Democrats, to put it mildly. Hopefully, redistricting after the 2020 census will improve things there, but for now, it’s definitely “red.” Still, thanks to Qasim Rashid and Vangie Williams for stepping up and taking on the abysmal Wittman.
And with that…feel free to vote in the poll for who you support, and to explain your thinking in the comments section. Thanks.
