Poll: 85% of Virginians Believe Climate Change is Happening; Vast Ignorance Other Than That

0

First, here’s the good news on a newly-released survey by the Center for Climate Change Communication George Mason University, “Perceptions of Extreme Weather and Climate Change in Virginia.”

The Good News

*Virginians overwhelmingly (by a 50%-12% margin) say that they notice “extremely hot days becoming more or less frequent in Virginia compared to the past.” Correct answer!

*Virginians overwhelming (by a 53%-12% margin) say that intense storms in Virginia have become “much more frequent” or “somewhat more frequent.” Again, correct answer!

*Best of all, an overwhelming 85% of Virginians believe (not that it’s a matter of “belief,” but whatever…) that climate change is happening. Only 5% are “extremely sure” or “very sure” that it isn’t happening. Yet again, correct answer!

*Among young people, it’s 94%-5%, and among Democrats, it’s 95%-4%. The older and more Republican you get, the higher the number of people who don’t “believe” in climate science. Can we say “brainwashed by Fox News?”

The Not-So-Good News

*Only 31% of Virginians get the correct answer, which is that human emissions of greenhouse gases are causing climate change. Although, in fairness, another 36% say it’s a combination of human and natural causes, which is certainly possible (although the role of natural causes is doubtful, at least not to any significant extent).

*22% of Virginians give the blatantly, hilariously wrong answer that climate change is “caused mostly by natural changes in the environment.”

*Just 49% of Virginians say they are worried about climate change. The correct answer should be 100%, as it’s already affecting all of us, and it’s only going to get (much) worse every year that goes by.

*Incredibly, 57% of Virginians somehow have convinced themselves that climate change won’t harm them personally. That’s just blatantly wrong, unless of course those Virginians don’t eat, breathe, get rained or snowed on, have insurance, hunt or fish, farm, etc, etc.

*Only 26% of Virginians say they’ve thought about this existential problem “a lot,” with 32% saying they’ve thought about it “some.” And only 19% say they know “a lot” about this subject, with 51% saying they know “some” and 31% saying they know “not too much” or “nothing at all.” Ugh.

*Possibly the worst answer of all, demonstrating how FUBAR the media coverage of this issue has been (and also how effective the gazillions of dollars in disinformation the fossil fuel companies have pushed out has been), only 43% (!) of Virginians give the correct answer, which is that “[m]ost scientists think climate change is happening.”  34% of Virginians give the completely, wildly incorrect answer that “There is a lot of disagreement among scientists about whether or not climate change is happening.” And yes, there’s a big partisan divide on this, with a majority of Democrats giving the correct answer, and 43% of Republicans giving the wrong answer. Again, Fox News brainwashing – combined with outrageously false statements by Republican Congresscritters like Morgan Griffith and Attorney General Ken Kookinelli, as well as  horrendously bad reporting (lacking in almost every way – not enough, false equivalency, you name it) – by the corporate media are a big cause of this problem.

So, let’s review the correct answers: 1) global warming/climate change IS happening; 2) global warming/climate change IS being caused by humans; 3) global warming/climate change IS affecting all of us, and WILL continue to affect all of us, in a negative way; 4) there IS overwhelming (97% or so) consensus among climate scientists on all of this; and 5) anyone who tells you differently IS either ignorant (willfully or not) or lying through their teeth.

Quinnipiac Poll: McAuliffe 43%-Cooch 39%; Same-Sex Marriage 50%-43%

3

So, it looks like Quinnipiac’s Virginia poll (McAuliffe by 4 points) is very much in line with Public Policy Polling (McAuliffe by…yep, 4 points). Detecting a pattern here? Oh, by the way, anyone who reported the Roanoke College “poll” as a serious poll is either a partisan hack or has no clue how bad Roanoke College’s “polling” is. For more on that subject, see here and here. In contrast, both PPP and Quinnipiac are rated as high-quality pollsters whose results can be trusted. Roanoke College’s “poll,” which has been a complete and utter travesty for a couple years now. With that, here are the Q-Poll highlights:

*”A yawning gender gap in the Virginia governor’s race leaves Democrat Terry McAuliffe with a slight 43 – 39 percent lead over Republican State Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.”

*”Since May 16, McAuliffe’s net favorability has improved 6 percentage points while Cuccinelli’s net favorability has dropped 6 points.” (Except Cuccinelli’s to keep declining, as voters learn about what a nut he is.)

*”The controversy surrounding Gov. Bob McDonnell will not affect their vote for governor, 70 percent say, while 14 percent say it makes them less likely to vote for Cuccinelli and 10 percent say it would make them more likely to vote for him.” (Note: This differs sharply from PPP, which tweeted that “McDonnell could be liability this fall- 29% say they’re less likely to vote for candidate supported by him, 13% more”)

*”Virginia voters support 50 – 43 percent allowing same-sex couples to marry in the state.” Support is lopsided among Democratic and Independent voters. Guess who’s the exact opposite? That’s right, our friends the Teapublicans. Shocker, huh?

*On the LG and AG races, the candidates have close to ZERO name ID. For instance, 90% of Virginia voters say they “haven’t heard enough” about Ralph Northam to have an opinion; 88% say that for Mark Herring; 85% for Mark Obenshain; and even 81% for EW Jackson, who has gotten tons of media attention.

*32% of Virginia voters think that Bob McDonnell was involved in some sort of wrong-doing, with 16% saying he wasn’t, and 52% either having no opinion or refusing to answer.

*Only 4%(!) OF Republicans think that Gov. McDonnell should resign.

Virginia News Headlines: Thursday Morning

3

Here are a few Virginia (and national) news headlines, political and otherwise, for Thursday, July 18.

*The GOP tests the meaning of insanity (They’ve been doing that since they all caught Obama Derangement Syndrome in 2009.)

*Dionne: Democrats confront GOP bullying

*Virginia Is for Retro Anti-Sodomy Law Campaigns (What I don’t understand is how Cuckoo’s campaign thinks this will help him. Oh yeah, I’m sure there are tons of independent and swing voters out there who want to ban oral sex. Not.)

*Virginia Gubernatorial Candidate Campaigns On Effort To Restore Ban On Oral Sex

*Terry McAuliffe Leads Ken Cuccinelli in New Poll (“Big Gender Gap As Dem Holds Lead In Virginia Gov Race, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Voters Back Same-Sex Marriage 50 – 43 Percent.” By the way, Quinnipiac is a legitimate, highly-rated pollster, just like PPP. As for Roanoke College, it was rated one of the worst pollsters in America by Nate Silver, and has been consistently, laughably wrong here in Virginia. Ignore.)

*E-mails indicate Gov. McDonnell helped benefactor get meeting (Can we say “quid pro quo?”)

*Poll: McDonnell’s popularity hits its lowest point yet

*D.C. group: McDonnell one of U.S.’ “worst governors”

*McDonnell renting house to Va. health commissioner

*Cuccinelli, Marine Corps disagree on why his duty ended

*Cuccinelli fields energy-related questions at Abingdon town hall (Probably the area, along with climate change, he lies, distorts and misleads the most about.)

*Obenshain: Gay bias stand a disservice (What a joke. As Mark Herring says, “Actions speak louder than words, and Senator Obenshain has had several opportunities – including earlier this year – to add sexual orientation to the state’s nondiscrimination policy, and he has voted against each one.” He also WALKED OUT of the Senate rather than vote on the nomination of an openly gay judge. #FAIL )

*Kaine takes questions with Twitter town hall

*Mark Warner, eight other senators want slow death for Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac (Not sure how that’s a good idea, anyone else get it?)

*Money starts to flow in SW Va. legislative races

*Privacy of 18,700 UVa student Social Security numbers breached

*Fairfax Sheriff Retires And Insanity Ensues

*Getting together for the region’s good (“An industrial facility authority could address an identified barrier to economic growth”)

*Loudoun board censures Delgaudio (This crazed bigot needs to be off the board, next election!)

*First phase of the Silver Line may be delayed by eight weeks, officials say

*Another extremely hot and hazy day

Bob McDonnell Rated One of Worst, Most Corrupt Governors in America

0

Let’s just say, having our governor named one of the most corrupt in America is not an “honor” your state wants to have. It’s also, I’d point out, not something we ever had to worry about when Governors Warner and Kaine were in office. Oh, for those days again…

Anyway, here are the gory details on the corruption rankings by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW).

*The governors were rated on the following criteria: corruption, transparency (or lack thereof), partisan politics, pressuring public officials, cronyism, self enrichment, scandal, and mismanagement.

*McDonnell made the worst-of-the-worst “Ringmasters” list – along with luminaries such as wildly unethical Gov. Nathan Deal of Georgia, village idiot Rick Perry of Texas, Koch brothers’ favorite Scott Walker of Wisconsin, slimeball Rick Scott of Florida, and the lunatic Paul LePage of Maine.

*McDonnell achieved his fine ranking due to: “(1) investigations into whether he improperly accepted gifts in exchange for official action; (2) using his position to enrich himself and his family members; (3) awarding state money to a professional sports team after receiving gifts and campaign contributions; (4) failing to report his wife’s paid position as a consultant on his statement of economic interests; and (5) signing a controversial voter ID bill.”

*CREW provides pages of details for each of the above items (most of which we’re all familiar with when it comes to McDonnell), which you can read in their report. I’d say “enjoy,” except it’s too sickening.

P.S. It wasn’t just Republicans making the list, although not surprisingly they are the worst offenders when it comes to sweetheart deals with corporations, wealthy individuals, etc. Sadly, this type of corruption isn’t an aberration, it’s intrinsic to their entire crony capitalist “governing” (using that word very loosely) philosophy. Want more of this? Vote for Ken Cuccinelli, EW Jackson, and Mark Obenshain in November! Nope, didn’t think so…

Video: Arlington County Approves Columbia Pike Streetcar Project Agreement

2

Get Adobe Flash player
The speakers begin at around 2:05 into the video and conclude around 2:54:30. There’s some seriously bizarre (not to mention false) stuff in there, particularly starting at around 2:11 (“FRAUD!” “CO-CONSPIRATORS!”). My god. As for the supposed “alternative” of “Bus Rapid Transit,” I’m not even sure why this keeps coming up, as it’s impossible to have BRT on Columbia Pike, given the lack of a dedicated right of way. It’s the nonsensical talking point that won’t die, apparently.

At around 3:26, there’s a presentation on the Columbia Pike Streetcar Project Agreement, including the County Manager’s recommendation to approve and execute it, as well as the authority to receive reimbursement payments from Fairfax County, the governance structure of the partnership between Arlington and Fairfax counties, etc.

Starting at 3:37, the board members discuss the streetcar and specifically the governance agreement which “advances the technical planning, environmental and conceptual design work for the Columbia Pike streetcar” project. Board Chair Walter Tejada emphasizes that this is NOT a vote on the streetcar project per se; those votes, he points out, have already been taken by both the Arlington County and Fairfax County boards in 2006 and again in 2012. Tejada also point out that both counties continue to be committed to the project.

At 3:39:40, Board Member Libby Garvey moves to defer a vote on the Project Agreement, but this motion receives no seconds and dies, accordingly. Garvey then offers her reasons for opposing the project, most of which have been articulated previously (as have the arguments in favor). Garvey states that this is “not the Arlington I know” or “the board I know,” urges that the board “take a deep breath and pause,” and that it get an independent cost-benefit analysis that can be shared with the public before it moves ahead on the project.

For Arlington County Board members Walter Tejada’s and Chris Zimmerman’s responses, see the “flip”

Walter Tejada says he “respectfully disagree[s] with many of the points” Garvey just made, notes yet again that this project has been “long in the making,” extensively and exhaustively discussed by the community. Tejada adds that this will be a “terrific asset” for the southern part of Arlington, and that “we’ve been through this conversation many times before…so there’s no reason to rehash all of these subjects again.”

Chris Zimmerman says that this vote is simply a “routine matter” to carry out a policy that’s already been established, even if some people want to “re-argue” it every time it comes up. Zimmerman concludes (and it’s well worth quoting, in my opinion):

This is something that people have spent a lot of time and process on….Just saying we didn’t have a full discussion doesn’t make it true…Just saying the cost-benefit analysis hasn’t been done doesn’t make it true; I suspect if we did another one and they still didn’t like the result, they’d still be saying we hadn’t done one. Just saying that we don’t know where the money’s coming from doesn’t make it true. We actually in fact have a more specific plan to fund this –  more well established on the basis of the transportation funds we know we’re going to have – than I’ve seen in many of the projects going forward. Certainly, if this approach were taken, the Dulles rail project that’s being constructed right now would not have ever gone forward, it would have been derailed…and in fact people tried that.

The board then votes 4-1 to approve the Columbia Pike Streetcar Project agreement.

Democracy for America Endorses Final Purple to Blue Premier Candidates in VA

1

Good news from Democracy for America:

Dean founded org adds Harder, Mason to top program; Quarni to Next Wave

BURLINGTON, Vt. Today, Democracy for America (DFA) is elevating James Harder (VA-12) and Monty Mason (VA- 93) to fill the final two positions in its 2013 slate of five Purple to Blue Premier candidates in Virginia.

In addition to Harder and Mason,  DFA’s other Purple to Blue Premier candidates are Kathleen Murphy (VA-34), Jennifer Boysko (VA-86) and John Bell (VA-87).

“After beating back Richmond’s far right on transvaginal ultrasounds and recent battles in the state houses of Texas and North Carolina over even more stridently anti-women legislation, Virginians know what’s at stake in this year’s election and they’re ready to fight back,” said Gov. Howard Dean, founder of Democracy for America and former chair of the Democratic National Committee.

Previously, Harder and Mason had been endorsed by DFA as Purple to Blue Next Wave candidates, but the strong voter outreach and fundraising programs each campaign has run over the early summer months coupled with the growing weakness of their opponents has warranted their moving up to the top tier of DFA’s Purple to Blue races in the Old Dominion.

“With James Harder and Monty Mason on board we now have a slate of Purple to Blue Premier candidates who Democracy for America’s 21,000 members in Virginia are already taking action, making calls and knocking on doors to ensure they beat their right-wing enabling opponents in November,” said Kyran McCann, DFA’s Purple to Blue Project State Director in Virginia.

Launched in March, DFA’s Purple to Blue Project is a national, multi-year effort to win state House and Senate chambers across the country by making so-called “purple” state legislative seats decisively Democratic.  In 2013, DFA is committed to spending well over $750,000 to elect its five Purple to Blue Premier candidates in Virginia.

DFA is also announcing the addition of Atif Quarni (VA-13) to its Purple to Blue Next Wave program.

Candidates endorsed through the Next Wave program are fighting on turf that’s historically been more difficult for Democrats, but simply can’t be ignored because we know that smart, people-powered progressive campaigns those districts can win.

Other Purple to Blue Next Wave races include Jeremy McPike (VA-31) and Jasper Hendricks (VA-60)

Key Facts about the Purple to Blue Project & Democracy for America:

  • In 2013, DFA will spend well over $750,000 on its five Purple to Blue Premier delegate races alone

    • In addition to firing up volunteer boots on the ground for all of its endorsed races in Virginia, the project will run a tightly targeted paid field, mail and media program in its five Premier races.

  • DFA’s complete slate of Purple to Blue Premier are:

    • James Harder (VA-12)

    • Kathleen Murphy (VA-34)

    • Monty Mason (VA- 93)

    • Jennifer Boysko (VA-86)

    • John Bell (VA-87)

  • DFA’s Purple to Blue Next Wave endorsed candidates are:

    • Atif Quarni (VA-13)

    • Jeremy McPike (VA-31)

    • Jasper Hendricks (VA-60)

  • In its Purple to Blue Next Wave endorsed races DFA will make both short and long-term investments in the grassroots infrastructure of the district that, over time, will turn them from red to purple to blue.

  • DFA has over 21,000 members in Virginia and nearly 1 million members nationwide.

VA Senate Dem. Caucus Launches Petition to Have Bob McDonnell and Ken Cuccinelli “Come Clean”

Virginia Senate Democratic Caucus Launches Petition to Have Bob McDonnell and Ken Cuccinelli “Come Clean”

Senator McEachin:  “It’s time to put all this behind us.”

RICHMOND, VA —Continuing his efforts to have Governor Bob McDonnell and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli tell voters their roles in the current scandals, Donald McEachin today announced a Senate Democratic Caucus petition demanding they disclose all gifts they have received from Star Scientific and CEO Jonnie Williams and others.

“Ken Cuccinelli refuses to level with Virginians about all the gifts he has received and how those actions may have affected his official duties in regards to Star Scientific,” said Senator Donald McEachin.   “The Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Virginia needs to provide answers about his gifts, conflicts of interests and role in the current scandals.”

Newspaper reports indicate that Cuccinelli has taken at least $18,000 in gifts from a man and company that filed a lawsuit against the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Meanwhile, Bob McDonnell and his family’s haul in gifts, loans, expensive out of state trips, a wild shopping spree, vacations, wedding presents, and a Rolex watch totals well over $140,000.

“It’s only because of newspaper reports that we are seeing how much money Bob McDonnell has gotten from just one person.  What else did he get from Williams or other people with business before the Commonwealth?” remarked McEachin.   The Governor needs to be honest and provide answers about this major scandal and come clean.”

McDonnell’s Puzzling PR Strategy; And Who’s Paying for His High-Priced Lawyers?

0

by Paul Goldman

While the two polls – PPP and Quinnipiac – have big differences, they both point to one conclusion: what the heck are Gov. Bob McDonnell’s lawyers thinking? They have clearly put the SHUT UP BOB mouth guard on the guv, for His Excellency has had the worst possible PR strategy for months: that is to say, refuse to comment to the maximum extent possible. Same for his wife, although that is probably a good thing. His kids are silent, he has no public defenders at all except for some anonymous sources.

PR WISE THEN: a most puzzling strategy in terms of the POLITICS of the situation. As a lawyer, I understand the need NOT to say or do anything which might incriminate yourself, or antagonize the prosecutors should they feel your comments put them in a bad light.

I get that. But between THE SILENT TREATMENT and NON STOP YADA, YADA, YADA is a lot of ground: surely a smart PR person can find some high ground for the GUV, a good perch to launch some counter-offensive to the Washington Post, et. al, while not teeing off the federales.

Easy? Of course not. But the Governor just hired a major DC PR guy. He ain’t cheap. They say he isn’t being paid by the Governor’s PAC. They say it is private money. They didn’t say who is paying. But someone is paying, he, perhaps his firm, are on the clock 24/7 with this stuff.

INDEED: Who is paying for the Governor’s growing legal defense? Already, it includes not only this new PR maven, Rich Galen, but yet another big-time (as in BIG BUCKS!) lawyer, John Brownlee, the former top federale in Western Virginia, appointed by President Bush upon the recommendation of Senators John Warner and George Allen. Brownlee is a mayor player in the DC white collar defense bar. He is a real lawyer, highly respected. He just got hired. He ain’t cheap either. Who is paying for Big John?

Moreover, this makes the second BIG BUCKS lawyer on the McD legal defense team. The other is a partner in the an even more expensive and more powerful law firm.

How many senior DC lawyers – the Governor also has former VA AG Tony Troy, one of the state’s top lawyers, on his team – does it take to defend a case of failing to report a gift on your state disclosure form? Answer: ZERO. This means press reports about the Guv and/or Ms. Guv being under a federal probe into something other than failure to report gifts are true.

All of which raises a question THE FEDS AND I HAVE IN COMMON HERE: Who is paying for the Governor’s lawyers? These boys will run through $100K fast, through $250K fast. Unlike Morrissey and Goldman, LLC, they don’t defend people for free. These boys are all cash and carry: no ticket, no laundry, you pay at the door, you can go across town to Legal Aide. Is the person paying for the lawyers also paying for the PR strategy?

Bringing me full circle: The Governor’s PR strategy makes no sense to…THE PEOPLE OF VIRGINIA.

The polls don’t lie. They say a critical mass of Virginians have not made up their minds on the mess in good measure because they want to hear the Governor’s side of the story.

They have the Washington Post/VA media side of the story, they have the political gurus and McD Democratic opponents side of the story: and it isn’t favorable to the Governor. BUT most Virginians want to hear from McD before finalizing their view of the mess. So I ask: Why hasn’t the boy said something, gone on statewide TV, etc? He could get the coverage, no doubt, to explain the situation.

IF we have is a mess created by being too cute with lax gift laws, then there is a PR strategy which can help the GUV big time. True, he would have to admit being dumb, have to admit that he and his family were too eager to enjoy some of the perks of power, that they were too close to Mr. Williams: but it was a mistake of judgment, an ethical lapse, not criminal intent, not a complete moral breakdown.

In other words: The Governor would have to admit making mistakes due to avarice, vanity, indeed shame that he had screwed up on buying expensive real estate and then tried to legally keep that from the public by getting loans to keep his investments afloat.

NOT GOOD IMAGERY for sure: but that horse has long been out of the barn. The Governor’s image IS GOING TO SUFFER ONE WAY OR THE OTHER. So it is a question only of DAMAGE CONTROL. That’s what PR is all about in this type of mess: giving people a reason so they can give you the benefit of the doubt if they are so inclined.

Republicans and most independents seem to want to give McD the benefit of the doubt: they don’t think he is Virginia’s Richard Nixon. Thus the title to this piece: Why is McDonnell not fighting back in the media? The only possible answer: His lawyers have convinced him to stay mute to the maximum extent possible. THIS HAS BEEN THE WRONG PR STRATEGY. Moreover, it is puzzling. UNLESS…the federales have made it clear they are on his case big time for whatever reason.

Bottom line: Two polls come to the same conclusion, namely that McD is hurting himself by not doing damage control and giving people a plausible reason why someone they respected is getting all this bad press.

Perhaps the Governor’s strategy is this: Take the heat, convince the federales to leave him alone, and then counter-attack against the Post, et. al. for unfair reporting, etc. BAD IDEA, even if true. No PR strategy can put the toothpaste back into the tube.

McDonnell either does damage control now, or he suffers considerable, irreversible damage no matter how many lawyers he hires to solve his legal problems. Given all the money – THE PUBLIC NEEDS TO KNOW WHO – someone is paying for his high-priced lawyers, and for his new PR guy. You would think their collective minds could develop a better press strategy for His Excellency.

SO FAR, they have not. The polls say this is a big political mistake. Indeed, if McDonnell fought back, he could help Cuccinelli a lot in my view. So the big winner for McDonnell’s PR failure is likely to be the Dem ticket, with the GOP the big losers. Unless MCD has far more serious federal problems than we know, his current PR strategy is a total puzzlement to Virginia voters.

It’s the Sodomy, Stupid!

9

Just when you thought Ken Cuccinelli was down for the count, he finds an opening — so to speak.  As the Washington Post puts it in their headline, “Cuccinelli looks to go on offense against McAuliffe over Virginia anti-sodomy law.”

Game over!  Why didn’t we see this one coming?  This November 5th will be the Sodomy Election.

Yes, Cuccinelli has outfoxed us again.  He knows that Virginians are tired of government screwing them over, when what we really want is for government to regulate how we screw each other.  Yes, we want government off our backs — so it can jump right into our beds!

Our Ayatollah General knows these things.  He knows we understand that the state slogan, “Virginia is for Lovers”, comes with a huge asterisk attached: for certain types of lovers practicing certain state-approved acts of love.

I now understand the brilliance of his economic development strategy.  Think of all the jobs that will be created for Community Sodomy Monitors — and all those binoculars purchases!

Almost 250 years ago, great Virginians like Thomas Jefferson and George Washington led a revolution so that none of us would ever had to bend down before a monarch again.  Today’s freedom fighter, Ken Cuccinelli, leads the battle to ensure that no Virginians will ever have to bend over before anybody again.

Ken Cuccinelli knows that sodomy is what matters most, and so he is focused on the issue to the point of morbid obsession.  Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
