Another Losing Season Notched in that “Tradition”

Capitol Hill High School photo 141229CapitolHillHighSchool_zps09094c13.jpg Among the dumbest arguments against changing the Washington team's mascot has been that that would mean Oklahoma would have to change its name. Idiots. But a simple epiphany revealed on a Harrisonburg radio talk show captures the kind of lightbulb moments that will lead to the inevitable outcome.

One morning a fellow on WSVA 550 who had been on the fence about the controversy announced he had changed his opinion about the team name. The conversion came while watching a rerun of an old Daniel Boone television series episode. The story centered on a Native American child that was being enrolled in the frontier school. The telling scene was when the youth approached and was peppered by his classmates with clearly derogatorily intended pejoratives including the "R" word. In context and told by a series that originally aired in an era when we were much more embarrassed by our prejudices, the true message and meanness of the term rang out.

"...it has ties to a time when bounties were paid for the scalps of American Indians...it is a racial slur like any other racial slur that we wouldn't print in the pages of a family newspaper." - The Oklahoman Online

At about the same time, those "insensitive" Oklahomans in one school district were deciding to remove that nickname from the teams at Capitol Hill High School in Oklahoma City despite "tradition." You see Oklahomans, in a state named for the red people, can distinguish the difference.

Washington Post Gets What It Deserves: A Subpoena From Daniel Snyder

The Washington Post made a Faustian bargain with Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, giving him op-ed space in exchange for controversy & clicks. Now the bill is coming due, as Snyder is issuing a subpoena to the Post:
Snyder's lawsuit, in spite of his proud family journalistic legacy, now means the Post may have to spend time and money responding to a very broad document request and deposition supboena, even though the paper Snyder is actually suing is City Paper. The subpoena specifies that the "Documents" requested include, but are not limited to, "any kind of written, typewritten, printed, reproduced, recorded, or stored material whatsoever, whether printed, recorded, or stored electronically, magnetically, or otherwise, or reproduced by hand, including, but without limitation, drafts, notes, memoranda, letters, reports, minutes, projections, emails, telegrams, telex communications, publications, contracts, recordings, transcriptions of recordings and business records, books of accounts, ledgers, balance sheets, financial statements and all other financial documents of any kind, diaries, telephone logs, telephone bills, appointment books, desk calendars, working papers, routing slips and similar materials." Pity the Post intern who has to comb through the telegrams!
Think the Post will now donate to the Washington City Paper's Legal Defense Fund? Maybe they won't, but you should.

Daniel Snyder Finds A Safe Space: The Washington Post’s Op-Ed Page

If you didn't know the Washington Post's increasingly-desperate business model, you'd think they felt billionaire Washington Redskins owner (and Bob McDonnell donor) Daniel Snyder was in desperate need of some sort of avenue of getting his opinions out. I mean, Snyder owns radio stations, has enough money to buy all the additional airtime or ink he wants, and even has Tony Kornheiser under his thumb.

No, the Washington Post isn't giving Snyder op-ed space because he has some great idea to share and no other place to share it. Much like it does with Sarah Palin, climate science deniers, and other cranks, the Post is giving a controversial figure free space to make outrageous statements in hopes of luring lots of clicks. Its defenders will say, well, the Post is just trying to make money. And that's fine - it just shouldn't be surprised if its credibility falls to the level of the Drudge Report.

Anyway, on to Danny coming to Danny's defense after a wave of Snyder rage prompted by his lawsuit against the Washington City Paper over its The Cranky Redskins Fan's Guide to Daniel Snyder:
