Days After Gillespie Asks for Trump’s Help on the Campaign Trail, Democrats Currently Hold Double Digit Lead Over Gillespie in Head to Head Matchups

Gillespie’s Silence Against Trump Scandals and Support of Obamacare Repeal Are Causing Him Problems

In the most recent Washington Post-Schar School poll released today, Democrats Tom Perriello and Ralph Northam hold double digit leads over Republican frontrunner Ed Gillespie in head-to-head matchups.

This comes days after Gillespie asked President Trump for his help in the general election if he were to become the Republican nominee for governor.

Yet, Virginians continue to criticize Gillespie’s support of Donald Trump. While a majority of Republicans in Virginia say they approve of the way Trump is handling his job, more than 6 in 10 independents disapprove.

What’s most striking is how Virginians are turned off by Gillespie’s silence against President Trump. One voter pointed out: “If you see someone in your party doing wrong, speak up and do the right thing.”

“Despite a White House plagued in scandal, a health care plan that will strip coverage away from millions of Americans, and record low approval ratings for the President in Virginia, the only thing Ed Gillespie is worried about right now is making sure that Donald Trump will come campaign for him in the general election,” said DPVA spokeswoman Christina Freundlich. “The proof is in the pudding — the only way that Virginia will continue on its path of job growth and expanding access to health care for all Virginians is by keeping Ed Gillespie out of office and electing a Democrat to serve as governor this fall.”
