Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Sunday, November 5. In addition to the cover photo of LG Ralph Northam in the cold rain, check out the photo of Sen. Tim Kaine “leaving it all on the field,” to use a sports cliche.
- Trump’s approval rating is far lower than any president in 7 decades of polling (On one level, it’s amazing it’s even as high as 37%. On the other hand, given the strong economy Trump inherited from President Obama, it’s a pathetic commentary on the Orange Gropenfuhrer that his approval ratings aren’t much higher.)
- A year after his surprise election, 65 percent say Trump’s achieved little (POLL)
- Trump plans to meet with Putin during Asia trip (That should go well. Not.)
- Saudi Arabia Arrests 11 Princes, Including Billionaire Alwaleed bin Talal
- The Trump Administration’s Looming Political Crisis (“It’s been a chaotic year since the election. But the Mueller investigation signals that the most eventful days are still ahead.”)
- Trump’s year of anger, disruption and scandal
- Tax bill raises red flags for Senate GOP (“At least a half dozen Senate Republicans have already raised concerns about various proposals in the tax measure, setting the stage for arduous negotiations in the upper chamber.”)
- Russia-linked propaganda accounts banned by Twitter are still active on Facebook (“Multiple Facebook pages tied to Twitter’s suspended, Russia-linked feeds remain online.”)
- The DNC/HFA Agreement & Donna Brazile’s Growing Pile of Nonsense (“It is a genuine shame that someone like Donna Brazile, who has worked so hard and so consistently in Democratic politics for decades, has now chosen to make it all about herself.”)
- Daily Kos spreads fake news. But it’s not Russian trolls at work. It’s us.
- Donna Brazile: I considered replacing Clinton with Biden as 2016 Democratic nominee (For starters, the DNC Chair can’t do that.)
- Open Letter from Hillary for America 2016 Team (“All Democrats should be doing everything they can — canvassing, phone banking, etc. — to help our candidates for Governor of Virginia and New Jersey and the other races around the country next Tuesday.”)
- Rand Paul ‘Blindsided’ During Alleged Assault At Home Friday, ‘Fine’ Now
- Turmoil In The Democratic Party
- Bannon: Trump, Stewart Voters Going to Win Virginia Governorship for ‘Bush Guy’ Gillespie (That says it all – vote Democratic on Tuesday!)
- Ed Gillespie wages war on his own principles (“…who is the real Mr. Gillespie — the man who wants to solve such ‘complicated problems’ or the one content to sow hatred, suspicion and dread?” Based on Gillespie’s “odious” campaign, clearly the latter. Also, what “principles?”)
- Gillespie campaign’s final push for votes plays on hatred of black NFL protesters (“Yet another dog whistle from Virginia’s GOP gubernatorial candidate.”)
- Vogel, Fairfax close their race for lieutenant governor with attack ads
- Schapiro: What to look for Tuesday – and where (“Do not underestimate the tail-wagging-the-dog effect of Northern Virginia on state politics. If Democrats carry the region — of the 2 million-plus votes expected to be cast Tuesday, more than 500,000 will come out of the four counties — it’s likely game-over for Republicans.”)
- In the final sprint to Election Day, a historic push to turn out voters in Va.
- Did ‘bots’ inflame online anger over controversial ad in Va governor’s race?
- Attorney General Herring, GOP challenger Adams wrap up sulfurous campaign (More “both-siderism” and false equivalency from the corporate media…)
- Gordon Morse: Odd campaign season just about over (“Imagine what a GOP campaign operative could have done with Northam’s bio. The first TV ad out of the box would have Dr. Major Ralph Northam standing in the desert in camo with an automatic weapon in one hand and a stethoscope in the other. ‘I’m gonna save your loved ones with this (holds out stethoscope) and kill your enemies with this (holds up the gun or, better, fires it)!'”)
- Editorial: The best choices on Tuesday (Good picks with Northam, Herring, Fowler and Colaw. Bad ones for LG and for several House of Delegates seats, such as the godawful Republican Rocky Holcomb.)
- Recap of endorsements (The Daily Press got it right for Governor, LG and AG, but not so much for House of Delegates.)
- Washington County political parties host pre-election dinners
- Welcome to the D.C. suburbs, where the GOP tax plan could really hurt
- PM Update: Light rain persists into the early morning. Mostly cloudy but mild Sunday.
