Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Tuesday, February 20.
- The far-right smear campaign against students who survived the Parkland massacre (“They are being targeted because they don’t want more of their classmates to die.”)
- Krugman: The Content of the G.O.P.’s Character (“Trump’s latest outbursts were very much in character — and I don’t just mean his personal character. When did you last see a member of the Trump administration, or for that matter any prominent Republican, admit error or accept responsibility for problems?”)
- 5 things that are more complicated than buying a gun in Florida (Cold medicine, fertilizer, a marriage license, medical marijuana, anti-diarrhea medication.)
- Exclusive: Mueller’s interest in Kushner grows to include foreign financing efforts
- How the Survivors of Parkland Began the Never Again Movement
- After Florida School Shooting, Russian ‘Bot’ Army Pounced (Is there any way to block these @#$!ers?)
- The New Pennsylvania House Districts Are In. We Review the Mapmakers’ Choices. (“Based on recent election results, the new congressional map comes very close to achieving partisan balance.”)
- Parkland students show why 16-year-olds should be able to vote (These kids are way smarter than a lot of adults, such as Marco Rubio or Rick Scott oR Donald Trump for instance.)
- History experts in New York Times op-ed: Trump worst president ever, Obama in top 10 (Yep, we went to one of the greatest presidents in American history to the absolute worst.)
- It’s Been One Year of Amazing Scott Pruitt Accomplishments, All of Them Horrible (In an administration of corrupt scumbags, Pruitt might be uniquely heinous, because he’s trashing the agency tasked to protect our environment.)
- Trump Offers Endorsement, Romney Caves Immediately (Yep, that’s Willard for ya.)
- Teens Stage Gun Control Protest at White House
- Top Democrat suggests proof of Trump-Russia collusion still to come (“While these latest indictments do not allege Trump’s team knowingly colluded, says Adam Schiff, that doesn’t mean later ones won’t”)
- Don’t blame ‘Washington.’ Blame the GOP. (Agreed. When I hear any Democratic candidate talk about how “Washington” or “Congress” is “broken,” it makes me not want to support them, honestly, as that is SO wrongheaded. In fact, “Washington” and Congress have worked well before and can work well again – under strong Democratic leadership, assuming we all survive the Trump/Ryan/McConnell disaster.)
- The Dirty Little Deals That Would Foul the Environment (“Republicans are adding measures to appropriations bills that would gut protections of the air, water and landscape.”)
- How Russian Trolls Deceived Americans in 2016 Election (“With imperfect English and tireless posting on Facebook and Twitter, Russian operatives summoned Americans to rallies, praised Donald J. Trump and played on political divisions.”)
- Trump takes on McMaster. Again.
- A decade after meltdown, Senate moves to roll back bank rules (“That the legislation is coming 10 years after the worst credit crunch since the Great Depression has fueled passions around the debate.”)
- NY Daily News rips Trump for golfing amid funerals for Florida shooting victims
- What’s next for DACA recipients as deadline approaches?
- Russia’s Election Interference Is Digital Marketing 101 (“The new Mueller indictment doesn’t get at the root of the problem: the unchecked market power of social-media companies.” This is a huge problem.)
- White House Official Reportedly Said Mass Shooting Was A ‘Reprieve’ From Chaos (Warped.)
- Trump Defiant Despite Mueller’s Warning Shot on Russia Meddling
- Mothers group rallies in Northern Virginia for new gun control laws
- Virginia’s Republican-controlled House backs Medicaid expansion (Unlike the AP and others, this Vox story doesn’t get it wrong that the LG can break ties on matters pertaining to the budget.)
- At contentious meeting, 5th District Democrats decide to stick with convention (Yep, after all that…)
- Democrats stick with convention to nominate U.S. Rep. Tom Garrett challenger
- Police called after suspicious envelope found at Sen. Warner’s Roanoke office
- Virginia’s historic tax credits have spurred additional development, 2 new studies show
- 7th District candidate mistakenly recalls voting in presidential primary (Lame-o. See the video here, at around 25 minutes in.)
- Expanding our options (I’d argue that listening is good, but Democrats winning elections is even better.)
- Editorial: Use care when cutting state regulations (In some areas, like protection against harmful fossil fuel projects for instance, we actually should be strengthening regulations.)
- Blue skies and exceptional warmth through tomorrow; rain begins Thursday
