Virginia Primary Day 2018: Open Thread

45

Today is primary election day in Virginia (polls are open from 6 am to 7 pm; vote at your regular polling location). There are hot races all over the state, including for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination (between Corey Stewart, Nick Freitas and EW Jackson), as well as for the following Congressional nominations:

Democrats in VA-01: Candidates are Edwin Santana (see my endorsement here), John Suddarth and Vangie Williams; incumbent is Rep. Rob Wittman (R). Ed Gillespie won this district last November 54%-45%.

Democrats in VA-02: Elaine Luria vs. Karen Mallard.  Ralph Northam won this district last November 51%-47%.
Republicans in VA-02: Incumbent Rep. Scott Taylor vs. Mary Jones.

Republicans in VA-04: Shion Fenty vs. Ryan McAdams; incumbent is Rep. Donald McEachin (D). Ralph Northam won this district last November 62%-37%.

Democrats in VA-06: Candidates are Jennifer Lewis, Peter Volosin, Charlotte Moore, Sergio Coppola; Republicans have nominated Del. Ben Cline. Ed Gillespie won this district last November 60%-39%.

Democrats in VA-07: Candidates are Abigail Spanberger and Dan Ward; incumbent is Rep. Dave Brat (R). Ed Gillespie won this district last November 51%-48%.

Democrats in VA-09: Candidates are Anthony Flaccavento and Justin Santopietro; incumbent is Rep. Morgan Griffith (R). Ed Gillespie won this district last November 68%-31%.

Democrats in VA-10: Candidates are Jennifer Wexton (see my endorsement here), Alison Friedman, Lindsey Davis Stover, Dan Helmer, Julia Biggins and Paul Pelletier. Ralph Northam won this district last November 56%-43%.
Republicans in VA-10: Candidates are Rep. Barbara Comstock and Shak Hill.

*Note that VA-05 has already selected its nominees (Democrat Leslie Cockburn vs. Republican Denver Riggleman). Also note that Rep. Bobby Scott (D) is unopposed in overwhelmingly “blue” VA-03; Rep. Don Beyer (D) has a Republican opponent (Thomas Oh) in overwhelmingly Democratic VA-08; and Rep. Gerry Connolly has a Republican opponent (Jeff Dove) in strongly “blue” VA-11.

Interesting local races include a Democratic primary, between Matt de Ferranti (see my endorsement here) and Chanda Choun, in Arlington for County Board. Also, in Alexandria, voters select a nominee for Mayor – candidates are current Mayor Allison Silberberg and current Vice Mayor Justin Wilson – and six for City Council – see my endorsements here.

As always, make sure your voice is heard!

With that…what are you seeing and hearing out there? What’s turnout like in your neck of the woods? Who did you vote for and why? Feel free to add your observations in the comments section.
