Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Monday, September 10.
- Sweden’s ruling party hits election low as far right grows (The rhetoric of the far-right “Sweden Democrats” on immigration sounds very similar, actually, to Corey Stewart’s.)
- Establishment survives far-right surge in Swedish election
- Sweden’s Centrists Can Celebrate, But Not Too Hard (“The dynamics, the optimist would maintain, are actually rather calming. Sweden, population 10 million, has received 600,000 immigrants in the last five years, many of them in the unruly wave of 2015 and 2016. If this is all the Sweden Democrats can do with this momentous, highly visible influx, which has recently shown signs of subsiding, then Sweden is xenophobia-resistant enough to make far right dominance dreams unrealistic. “)
- China vows to respond if U.S. takes new steps on trade
- Intensifying Hurricane Florence poses extreme threat to Southeast and Mid-Atlantic
- The final 2018 primaries and what to watch in politics this week (“Andrew Cuomo tries to fend off celebrity challenge from Left…GOP alarmed by competitive Democrats in safe red states”)
- Trump Claims Credit for the Economy. Not So Fast, Says Obama. (I’d say that to the extent we can assign credit or blame about the economy to presidential leadership, Obama deserves around 95% of the credit for where we are at now compared to when he took office during the depths of the “Great Recession,” while Trump deserves perhaps 5% for not screwing it up…although give it a little while, as he’s trying hard to do just that.)
- CBS chief executive Les Moonves is departing amid probe into allegations of sexual misconduct (Good riddance. Meanwhile, we have a person against whom there are numerous allegations of sexual misconduct in the White House. As our “president.” Un-be-friggin-lievable!)
- The stress on Trump’s machine (“It’s hard to overstate the extremity and variety of pressures bearing down on President Trump and his understaffed White House.”)
- The Rule of Law Is Now Debatable (“With Donald Trump as president, unambiguous first principles have become ‘political controversies’ that a Supreme Court nominee must avoid.”)
- Nobody’s Heroes (“Bob Woodward’s new book presents Trump staffers as our last line of defense. We’re doomed.”)
- Trump officials to announce closure of Palestinian Liberation Organization office in DC: report (WTF???)
- Obama’s Back! (“The former president loosens Trump’s stranglehold on the news.”)
- The Kavanaugh hustle (“Republicans push for a quick confirmation — when it’s their pick.”)
- Democrats’ blue wave could crash over the GOP agenda in Congress
- Another Problem for Trump: A 2020 Primary Challenge Is Growing More Likely
- Bob Woodward On Donald Trump: ‘People Better Wake Up To What’s Going On’ (“‘Let’s hope we don’t have a crisis,’ the famed reporter said in assessing how the Trump White House operates”)
- Don’t Let Migrant Kids Rot (“If the Trump administration gets its way, the government will be able to detain the children indefinitely.”)
- The Urgent Question of Trump and Money Laundering (“How Bruce Ohr, President Trump’s latest Twitter target, fits a suspicious pattern of behavior on Russia.”)
- GOP candidate for Fla. governor spoke at racially charged events (Gotta love the weasel words by the Washington Post. In fact, some of the speakers at these events were outright racists.)
- Billie Jean King: Serena is still treated differently than male athletes
- Serena Williams was blamed for defending herself. That’s nothing new for black women.
- Can Mark Zuckerberg Fix Facebook Before It Breaks Democracy? (“The most famous entrepreneur of his generation is facing a public reckoning with the power of Big Tech.” I’d argue that Facebook is fundamentally flawed.)
- Juan Williams: Tide shifts away from Trump on NFL (It’s long past time for the tide to shift away from Trump on EVERYTHING.)
- Kavanaugh, the NYT op-ed, and the failure of Trump-skeptical Republicans (“Some Republicans know Trump is a menace — but can’t bring themselves to act.”)
- Trump Is Giving Up on Trying to Silence Stormy Daniels (“His legal team agreed in court not to try to enforce a nondisclosure agreement.”)
- Bob Woodward: Nixed Trump Tweet ‘Scared The Daylights’ Out Of The Pentagon (“A proposed tweet would’ve been seen by North Korea as a sign that ‘an attack is imminent.'”)
- Trump aides: anonymous ‘resistance’ op-ed is national security risk (Criminalizing the first amendment, brilliant huh?)
- Woodward: Draft Trump tweet alarmed Pentagon officials
- GOP attacks Obama, but doesn’t defend Trump (Just a reminder that today’s Republican Party is VERY comfortable attacking people of color.)
- Inside the GOP’s rescue mission for Ted Cruz (Why would anyone WANT to rescue this oily, disgusting slimeball?)
- Editorial: Do debates really matter? (I think it’s highly significant when you see Republican VA-06 nominee Ben Cline dodging debates – particularly those on neutral turf – with Democrat Jennifer Lewis. What is Cline afraid of? Clearly, he’s afraid of…Lewis!)
- Transcript: Sen. Mark Warner on “Face the Nation,” September 9, 2018
- Warner: Anonymous op-ed is no threat to national security
- OPINION: Respecting the power of the black vote (“The Waynesboro Democratic Committee, however, is eager to bridge the gap and welcome the black community back to the table. We feel the urgent need to do better in addressing the needs of the black community and listening to determine how we can be a part of solutions to improve the lives of all Waynesboro residents.”)
- Jeion A. Ward: Bring the ERA to the General Assembly floor
- Peppers: Death is not the answer (“Peppers is a full-time professor at Roanoke College and a part-time law school lecturer. He is co-author of two books on the death penalty.”)
- Some police face justice for shooting into cars. But Bijan Ghaisar’s family can’t even get answers. (“Almost 10 months later, a conspiracy of silence endures.” This continues to be completely unacceptable. Somebody needs to show some moral courage and step forward.)
