Governor Northam Sets 1/5/21 Special Election Date For 90th House of Delegates District

The following is from Gov. Ralph Northam’s office. Note that the candidates for the Democratic nomination are Angelia Williams Graves and Rick James, and the “firehouse primary” to select the nominee will be this coming Saturday (12/5). Note that this district is overwhelmingly Democratic (e.g., went 78% for Tim Kaine in 2018), which means that the Democratic nomination is basically “the ballgame.”

Governor Northam Sets Special Election for 90th House of Delegates District
RICHMOND—Governor Ralph Northam today issued a writ of election declaring a special election in the 90th House of Delegates District for January 5, 2021. The seat was previously held by Delegate Joseph C. Lindsey, who resigned effective November 15, 2020.
Under § 24.2-216 of the Code of Virginia, the Governor is charged with setting the special election date when a vacancy occurs in the General Assembly absent of the General Assembly being in session.

The last day for candidates to file to appear on the ballot is December 7, 2020. Information regarding candidacy requirements can be found on the Department of Elections website.
