This is great news (h/t: Lloyd Snook), as Pamela Karlan is absolutely brilliant, a super-strong progressive, and also someone with strong Virginia connections (“From 1988 to 1998, Karlan taught law at the University of Virginia School of Law, where she won the All-University Outstanding Teaching Award in 1995–96 and the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia‘s Outstanding Faculty Award in 1997″). Note that Karlan was also mentioned back in 2009 as potentially the first openly gay Supreme Court justice, but that never happened, unfortunately. On the bright side, joining the Justice Department as Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Civil Rights Division will give Karlan power to do a great deal of good in this country…so again, great news!
