From the Virginia House Democratic Caucus:
Republicans Double Down on Bill to Outlaw Abortion At Conception
Republicans stand with MAGA extremists, not Virginia Women
RICHMOND, VA – Today, after spending the last month trying to avoid voting on their extreme and dangerous abortion bills, Republicans were forced to show what we’ve always known: they stand with the most extreme MAGA wing of their party in outlawing the right to choose. Democrats moved to strike HB 1395, a bill that defines life at conception — clearly so dangerous, so out of touch that they refused to allow their members to show where they stand. The Republicans continued to use procedural tactics to avoid a vote. The deployment of these tactics removed any question of where they stand when it comes to a woman’s right to choose.
“This bill puts politicians in the middle of decisions that should be made between a woman and her doctor. This is extreme. It’s dangerous,” Delegate Angelia Williams Graves who made the motion to strike said, “Republicans’ refusal to strike the bill, hear the bill, or do anything with the bill shows where they stand. There’s no room for this bill in Virginia– and there’s certainly no room for this to remain in consideration by the House of Delegates.”
“Today proved what we always knew: when it comes to a woman’s right to choose, Republicans do not stand with Virginia women,” said Leader Don Scott. “Let’s be clear about what this legislation means: that when a woman is going through one of the hardest things a person could go through, losing a pregnancy, they are not met with comfort, but with handcuffs.”
Last month, Leader Don Scott, in a press conference and floor speech, challenged House Republicans on their decision to propose legislation stating life begins at conception and a 15 week abortion ban, but refusing to docket it.
