From the Kimberly Pope Adams for Delegate campaign:
RECOUNT OF ELECTION RESULTS IN HD82 TO PROCEED
DINWIDDIE, VA — On Tuesday, following the certification of the 2023 election results by the Virginia Board of Elections, Kimberly Pope Adams’ attorneys filed a petition in the Dinwiddie Circuit Court to request a recount of the vote. Today, the Dinwiddie Circuit Court granted the petition and scheduled the recount to begin on December 19, 2023.
Following the ruling, Pope Adams released the following statement:
“In the last month since I announced my intention to seek a recount, I have received an outpouring of support from friends, family, partner groups, and people all across the Commonwealth. For that and all of the support throughout my campaign – from knocking doors to spreading the word – I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. I also want to thank the election officials who have worked tirelessly to count the votes.
“From the very beginning, we knew that this campaign would be an uphill battle and that everything would come down to the wire. The margin in this vote shows just that. The people of the 82nd House District deserve to know with absolute certainty who is the winner of this race and Virginia law affords them that right.
“I will allow the process to take the full time and effort necessary to ensure that every valid vote is counted. While I am hopeful of the outcome, I will respect the results.”
Virginia law allows campaigns to seek a recount of the votes if the margin between candidates is less than 1% of the vote. The difference in the voter count in HD82 is 78 votes – well within the margin. The recount is scheduled to begin on December 19, 2023.
