Harris Miller, Who Chaired the Fairfax Dems, Helped Design the Senior Executive Service, Ran for Congress in 1984 and US Senate in 2006, Dies at 71

I just saw the following sad news, that Harris Miller – who I met when he ran for the Democratic US Senate nomination in 2006 against Jim Webb – died last Thursday, at 71 years of age, from pancreatic cancer, with a funeral service being held today at Temple Rodef Shalom in Falls Church. Condolences to Harris Miller’s family and friends. on his passing. here’s just a quick synopsis of Miller’s bio:

• “In the Carter Administration, Harris helped design the Senior Executive Service.”
• “On Capitol Hill, he worked on the Judiciary Committee for Congressman Ron Mazzoli, developing the 1986 Simpson-Mazzoli Act, which reshaped US immigration law.”
• “He went on to lead two trade associations. Most notably, at the Information Technology Association of America, he helped define the relationship between the federal government and a booming Silicon Valley and played a lead role in coordinating the public-private response to the Y2K threat.”
• “Harris served, at various times, on the boards of the Virginia Opera, the National Philharmonic, the American Heart Association, the George Washington University Heart and Vascular Institute, the Virginia Lottery Board, and as Chair of the Fairfax County Democratic Committee (1986-1993).”
• Miller also headed up the “Association for Private Sector Colleges and Universities.”
• Miller ran for the Democratic nomination for US House of Representatives in HD10 in 1984, losing to John Flannery 55.3%-44.7%.
• Miller ran for US Senate in 2006, winning 72,486 votes (46.5%) of the vote against Jim Webb, who went on to narrowly defeat Republican George Allen in November.
