The following is a press release from VA06 Democratic nominee Beth Macy, who is running against the utterly despicable, MAGA extremist, Trump-bootlicking Rep. Ben Cline (R-VA06). I mean, VA06 is a deep-red district, but if people who live there want better representation than the disaster they’ve got now, the choice this fall is crystal clear – replace Cline with Macy!
BETH MACY CHALLENGES CLINE TO THREE DEBATES
“Public debates are a cornerstone of democratic elections,” Macy said.
ROANOKE — Democratic Congressional candidate Beth Macy challenged Republican incumbent Rep. Ben Cline to three debates before the Nov. 3 election.
Macy, who is running to unseat Cline in the Virginia’s 6th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, proposed three in-person debates, one each in Roanoke, Harrisonburg and Winchester, to be held between Sept. 25 and Nov. 1.
Macy said in a statement:
“Public debates are a cornerstone of democratic elections. They allow voters to hear directly from candidates, compare positions on the issues and evaluate how candidates respond to questions and differing viewpoints. Debates promote transparency and accountability by giving candidates a public forum to explain their priorities and records, helping voters make informed decisions before casting their ballots—values I hope Ben Cline and I both share.”
Macy proposed that both candidates agree on event hosts, neutral locations, qualified moderators and debate formats. She requested that questions come from voter submissions, so the discussion focuses on issues voters care about most. Macy proposed the debates through certified mail to Cline’s campaign and requested a response by Aug. 24.

Beth Macy has spent her career holding truth to power. She grew up poor in a small Ohio town, became the first in her family to graduate from college, and built her adult life in Roanoke, Va., where she and her husband, Tom, raised their two children. For 25 years at The Roanoke Times, Beth covered the stories of people and communities across Western Virginia—listening without judgment and digging for the truth, even when it was uncomfortable.
She’s spent her career highlighting how the system has devolved to benefit billionaires over working families. She has listened to, grieved with and advocated alongside parents who lost children to addiction, workers whose jobs disappeared, and communities forced to fight for basic services that include child care, healthcare and mental health treatment. She has watched families across the 6th District work harder than ever while falling further behind, as the people in power have become more beholden to corporations and the ultra-wealthy than to the communities that elected them. Now she’s running for Congress to make life affordable for working families, expand access to health care and ensure every child has a real chance at a better future.
