“Hey @GlennYoungkin, did you miss what your party’s likely presidential nominee just said about Russia & NATO?”

17

See below for a few reactions to Youngkin’s appalling, unhinged, disgraceful, false smear of Democrats yesterday. How on earth can Virginia Democrats work with someone like this? Also, note that Youngkin made his insane claims about Democrats on the same day that the leader of his party (and somebody who Youngkin has lavishly praised MANY times), Donald Trump, made crystal clear that he is a puppet of Putin’s, disparages America constantly, wants to destroy our democracy, would dismantle NATO and abandon our closest allies, etc.

P.S. By the way, do the WaPo’s Virginia political “reporters” – and others in Virginia – plan to completely ignore Youngkin’s unhinged comments or what?

(“Taking shots” would be one thing – it’s politics, after all, not beanbag – but this is completely insane, irresponsible, unhinged language by Youngkin.)

Video: VA Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell (D) Talks About Youngkin’s Unrealistic (and Regressive!) Tax Plans and “Budget Gimmicks”; the Proposed Tysons Casino and Wizards/Caps Arena; Gun Violence Prevention and Reproductive Freedom; etc.

2

See below for video of VA Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell (D-Fairfax), speaking this morning at the Mt. Vernon town hall, about a variety of issues, including Glenn Youngkin’s absurd, regressive and unrealistic budget/tax gimmicks; the hundreds of bills the State Senate has already passed and WILL pass (including on gun violence prevention and women’s reproductive freedom); the need for revenue increases to fund education and other priorities; the proposed Tysons casino (and the need for diversified revenue sources for Fairfax County) and the proposed Wizards/Caps arena in Potomac Yard in Alexandria (Sen. Surovell doesn’t know whether or not that’s going to end up happening); etc. Check it out!

  • We have a brand new building by the way in Richmond. Please come down and visit us. You helped pay for it. It’s a $250 million new office building, it’s probably one of the best in America. We have brand new hearing rooms, we have brand new offices, we have a restaurant finally – Capitol Square has been a food desert for the last 6 years – we have tunnels that connect everything so  you only have to go through security once. So it’s it’s a much more comfortable facility to come and visit us and lobby us and meet us.”
  • We have new majorities. We have a brand new  Democratic majority in the House of Delegates which is a big change, with the first black speaker in the 400-year history of our of House of Delegates…Half of my Democratic caucus has been there less than one year, which is amazing; we haven’t had this much change in our legislature since about 1925, I think. Out of the 21 members of my caucus, I think nine are freshmen and two have been there less than 12 months…and we have also have seven brand new Republicans as well…”
  • “If you would listen to our governor and his talk about our budget, he would tell you everything’s fine, it’s great, we have lots of money, we can cut taxes all day, you can have  everything you want, don’t have to pay for anything – it’s not how it works. The governor’s budget I was very disappointed in. He wanted to cut income taxes while raising sales taxes. The net effect of that was would be to, say, if you make more than $200,000 a year, you would pay about $9,000 less per year in state income taxes. But if you make less than $50,000 a year, you would pay more in taxes because of the sales tax increase. And that was just totally unacceptable to me and my caucus…”
  • “He also talked about cutting the car tax or getting rid of it actually, which is very politically popular but he never had a plan [or] explained how he was going to do it or accomplish it...the car tax in Northern Virginia pays for about $3,500 per student in our school system and [Youngkin] never explained where he was going to…come up with…that amount of money to pay for it. And this is why we haven’t talked about it in for 25 years, because…it’s really a hard thing to figure out, I mean to make up that kind of money it would take a massive income tax increase. And so that’s not going to be a thing.”
  • So once we unwind all [Youngkin’s] budget gimmicks, we discovered that after the Medicaid, the K through 12, all the sort of budget creep you normally have, there’s really not a ton of money in our budget. And we just had an our independent auditor do a big study of our K through 12 system, and according to the auditor we are about $7 billion behind what we should be spending on K through 12 on a statewide basis at the state level. And Chairman McKay likes to point out that our study says the state of West Virginia spends 25% more than Virginia on K through 12. I just want you to think about that for a second. I mean West Virginia is ahead of us. Kentucky spends more than than Virginia does. We’re getting outspent by all our neighboring states on this. And it’s about a $7 billion hole. And just to have an understanding of how big that is, if we were to raise raise income taxes to 10% on people making more than a million dollar a year, that would only pick up about a billion three out of the seven. So if we’re going to start making progress on investing in our children and investing in K through 12, you’re going to start to hear discussion about trying to do something about on the revenue side over the next four or five years, because that’s the only way we’re ever going to make up that hole. And I just want to make sure everybody’s clear about that at the outset.”
  • “The county is dealing with their own challenges, which I’m sure [Mt. Vernon Supervisor] Dan [Storck] will talk about. But when you see commercial office buildings in this county selling at a third of the price they did 5 years ago, we have a big commercial property tax  crunch in this county. Which is why one of the things you heard about was a Fairfax casino this year in Tysons. You know, the casino across the river that all of us see when we come in is the most profitable casino outside of Las Vegas – they see over a billion dollars a year in table game revenue going through there every year. When we studied this five years ago in Fairfax, they said the most valuable casino opportunity in in Virginia is in Tysons, and that’s one of the reasons I supported that. A casino in Tysons would save you all, everybody in this room, about $500 a year in property taxes, because the revenue  it would generate off of tourists and off of people out of the state and people coming to visit. So it’s not going to go this session, the bill didn’t pass, it died in committee, there’s a lot of opposition in McLean to it obviously. But we have to diversify our revenue sources in this county if we’re going to be able to provide the quality of services that I think everybody in this room expects out of their K through 12 system and your parks and your rec centers that you’re going to see and everything else.”
  • If you were up here, you’d probably think all we talk about is casinos and arenas; we actually do a lot more thanI’m not going to talk about the arena very long. I don’t know whether that’s going to happen or not. The governor finally put out a transportation plan on it. It’s not as many cars as you think. When you think about the volume that goes into the Cap Center, it’s actually about the size of two, maybe two and a half high school graduations per game – it’s not a football stadium, it’s about 18,000 people per game, so it’s actually not a big event. And I don’t know whether where that’s going to go.”
  • “You heard the congressman a moment ago about how productive that their Congress has been, what was it 24 bills or 30 bills…we’ve done about 400 so far in the Senate, we have about 300 to go I think in the next three days. And then we’ll do another probably probably another 400 or 500 bills after that that come out of the House; we tend to be very efficient, move very quickly.”
  • “But some…things that we’re fighting about a lot you’re going to be reading more, I think there’s an article today about all the firearm bills we passed; we passed a ban on AR-15 rifles which I think is important. We also passed a law saying you can’t carry your AR-15 in public..My father and my son like to go to the Alexandria farmer’s market every day…and they went there and saw these guys from Prince George carrying AR15 rifles at the farmers market, which my son still talks about today. I asked the guy on the floor why you need to carry it in public and he said, well it’s my god-given right. We passed a 5-day waiting period for guns. We passed safe storage laws. We’ve passed we’ve passed laws creating liability for gun manufacturers that knowingly sell rifles that are known to kill a lot of people. We’ve done a lot there. We’re passing a bunch of laws I think on Monday or Tuesday to protect women’s right to make their own healthare decisions which I think we need to continue to press hard on. And other than that, we have a lot of bills churning through the system, it goes very quickly, we need you to communicate with us to tell us what we need to keep an eye on, what we need to be aware of, it happens so fast, it’s skeet shooting…”
  • “…when I came out of the building last  night at 6:00, I ran into the senator from Roanoke, and he’s like what are you doing this weekend? I said I got to go to a town hall. And he’s like, ‘you Northern Virginians and your town halls’. They don’t  do this in the rest of the state, okay? I want you all to understand how special this is – they don’t see this level of civic activism and engagement in most of the rest of the state, and they think we’re weird because we do these things. But I enjoy it, I enjoy the feedback and being able to communicate with you all and hear what you have to say. And please make sure we keep doing this year after year…”

Video: Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA11) Rips GOP-Controlled House for “fiddling while Rome burns”; Calls for Keeping the Government Open, Funding Ukraine, the Killing to Stop and a Two-State Solution in the Middle East

3

See below for remarks by Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA11), speaking at the Mt. Vernon Town Hall this morning. A few key points by Rep. Connolly included:

  • Concern that the U.S. House, under Republican mismanagement, is “fiddling while Rome burns” – for instance, may not keep the government or fund Ukraine in its battle for freedom and “against the authoritarian nature of Vladimir Putin’s Russia.”
  • Pointing out that “the last Congress, the 117th Congress, was the most productive Congress since LBJ was in the White House.” That Congress, of course, was under Democratic control.
  • A call for the killing to stop in the Middle East, with “a peaceful solution and that solution is a two-state solution.”

Check out the full video and transcript, below!

  • “You know, we are at a critical moment in our country and we’re facing some really serious issues in the United States Congress that matter to us. Will we keep the government open? …the expiration of the funding of the government is March 1 and March 8 in two parts. A shutdown of the government affects our region almost more than any other region of the country…It creates uncertainty, it affects small businesses, it affects federal employees, it affects federal contract employees. It is also a signal failure when we don’t fund the government by the Congress.”
  • The last Congress, the 117th Congress, was the most productive Congress since LBJ was in the White House. And by the way, I’m very proud of this, and …Nancy Pelosi says self-promotion is a terrible thing, but someone’s got to do it, and  in the most productive Congress in the last half century I was designated the most effective legislator in the Congress. We did some extraordinary things – we passed the biggest infrastructure bill in American history, we passed the biggest environmental bill in American history, we passed the CHIPS and Science Manufacturing Act to bring technology  manufacturing back to the United States – the largest industrial policy bill ever passed by any Congress in American history, we passed COVID relief that inter alia had a child tax credit that in one year cut child poverty in America in half  – in one year.”
  • “Now there’s this Congress, under new management. We spent our time electing a speaker and unelecting a Speaker. We wasted 6 weeks on that endeavor alone – no legislation. We are censuring people and impeaching people for frivolous reasons. In the first session of this Congress which ended in December, we passed only 29 bills, half of them post office namings. That’s fiddling while Rome burns.”
  • “Meanwhile people are fighting and dying in Ukraine for their democracy, for their freedom, and we cannot get a Ukraine aid bill to the floor of the House. That’s a shameful moment. America has to stand with people who are willing to fight for their freedom and we have to stand against the authoritarian nature of Vladimir Putin’s Russia. For the last two years, I have served as the president of NATO’s legislative arm, the Parliamentary assembly. That means I’ve represented all 32 NATO parliaments as their president. And I have spent those two years working very hard to build consensus among our allies to help Ukraine in any and every way we can. And I’m going back back to NATO this Friday and what am I going to tell them? What am I going to tell them about American leadership, about our reliability that you can count on us as the beacon of hope for people who aspire for the freedoms we take for granted? We have to win this political battle here at home so that they can win on the battlefield. They don’t ask us to do the fighting and dying for them, they just ask us to help them in training and equipment – and that is that’s a a noble cause.”
  • “We also have an incredible humanitarian crisis unfolding in the Middle East. The killing must stop. There has to be a peaceful solution and that solution is a two-state solution. There has to be a homeland for Israel that’s safe and secure from terrorist attacks like the one that occurred in October 7th. But there also has to be a homeland for the Palestinian people, millions of whom live with violence, with the uncertainty of the future and with death and destruction occurring as we speak. That has to end.”

Biden Campaign Responds to “Trump’s unhinged ramblings [Friday night] in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania with the NRA”

12

From the Joe Biden for President campaign:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 9, 2024

The following is a statement from TJ Ducklo, Biden-Harris 2024 Senior Advisor for Communications, in response to Donald Trump’s unhinged ramblings tonight in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania with the NRA:

“Every single time Donald Trump opens his mouth, he’s confused, deranged, lying, or worse. Tonight, he lied more than two dozen times, slurred his words, confused basic facts, and placated the gun lobby weeks after telling parents to “get over it” after their kids were gunned down at school. But you won’t hear about any of it if you watch cable news, read this weekend’s papers, or watch the Sunday shows. Beltway reporters may be numb to Trump’s horrifying candidacy defined by chaos, division, and violence — but the American people are the ones who will suffer and die if he’s allowed anywhere near the Oval Office again.

“This is not a drill – Donald Trump is THE fundamental threat facing the American people and everyone needs to act like it. Including the free press – while we still have one.”

The following is a list of lies Donald Trump told tonight. In Harrisburg, PA. Like literally hours ago:

Trump falsely said he won the Virgin Islands caucus “100%.”

Trump falsely said he won PA twice.

Trump falsely said Biden wants an open border.

Trump falsely said terrorists were taken into this country by the millions.

Trump falsely said we had the safest borders under his presidency.

Trump falsely said Biden will confiscate guns and take away the right to self-defense.

“Biden has implemented a vicious zero tolerance policy. Do you know what that is? It’s not good. That revokes the license of independent firearms dealers if they make a single minor error, little tiny error.”

Trump falsely said no one died in Afghanistan during his presidency.

Trump falsely claims “nothing happens” to people who commit assault or murder.

Trump falsely said he worked with the FBI and said that Biden made recovering the

documents very difficult.

Trump falsely claimed he was “covered by the Presidential Records Act” when he

destroyed documents.

Trump falsely says Catholics are being persecuted.

Trump falsely said electric cars don’t work in cold weather.

Trump falsely said “We never had a country that was doing so well as it was during the

Trump four years,” but he left office with fewer jobs than he entered

Trump falsely claimed he got Mexico to send 28,000 soldiers to the border.

Trump falsely said Mexico took 32% of our car industry.

Trump falsely said everyone coming to the country is a man between 18 and 25.

Trump falsely says there were no terror attacks during his administration.

Trump falsely said Biden tried to ram through an “open border bill.”

Trump falsely said if the bill was passed unions would be out of business.

Trump falsely said Democrats cheat in elections.

Trump falsely said Democrats cheated in the 2020 election.

Trump falsely said President Biden can close the border and the bill is a hoax.

Trump falsely said we don’t have free speech.

Trump falsely said we don’t have a free and fair press.

Trump falsely said he did better in PA in 2020 than 2016.

Trump falsely said they’ll change the name of PA if he’s not elected.

Trump falsely said we’re a failing nation and a nation in decline.

“Joe Biden is the worst and most incompetent and most corrupt president in the history of our country.”

Falsely said Biden is going to empower America’s enemies, unleash misery throughout your state and throughout our country, bedlam and chaos at home and abroad.

Video: In Kyiv, Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA07) Joins Bipartisan Congressional Delegation Urging Continued Aid to Ukraine

From Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA07)’s office:

In Kyiv, Spanberger Joins Bipartisan Congressional Delegation Urging Continued Aid to Ukraine

The Congresswoman Joined Fellow Members of the House Intelligence Committee — Democrats and Republicans — to Meet With President Zelenskyy & Make Case for Continued Aid to Ukraine

At Press Conference in Kyiv, Spanberger Underscores Bipartisan Congressional Support for Ukraine

KYIV, UKRAINE — U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger — a Member of the U.S. House Intelligence Committee — today joined fellow Committee Members on a bipartisan, official congressional delegation (CODEL) visit to Ukraine.

In Kyiv, Spanberger and her colleagues met with U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget A. Brink and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The group discussed the ongoing war in Ukraine and underscored the need for continued military aid to the U.S. ally in their fight against Putin’s invasion. Spanberger was joined by U.S. Representatives Mike Turner (R-OH-10) — Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Jason Crow (D-CO-06), French Hill (R-AR-02), and Zach Nunn (R-IA-03).

Speaking to members of the press, Spanberger reaffirmed the support of the American people for Ukraine’s fight for sovereignty and emphasized continued bipartisan support in Congress for new aid to Ukraine.

Click here to watch her full remarks, and a full transcript of Spanberger’s comments is below.

I’m Abigail Spanberger. I represent Virginia’s Seventh District in Congress.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to be here. Thank you, Madam Ambassador.

To the Ukrainian people, thank you for welcoming us on this trip. As my colleagues have stated, the purpose and the goal of this trip is to ensure that our Ukrainian partners recognize the commitment that the American people — and certainly the American Congress — will continue to have in supporting Ukraine in its fight for freedom.

It is consistent with who the American people are. It is consistent with our democratic values to recognize the extraordinary strength, the extraordinary might, the extraordinary grit of the Ukrainian people as they have worked tirelessly to defend their own freedom and their own country.

And the investment and the support of the American people in that fight, in that effort, is one that we have proudly made — and I look forward to us continuing to make.

We have seen the successes of Ukraine as Ukraine has won back more than 50 percent of the land that Russia has taken since their invasion two years ago. This is impressive. It is important. And we see it and recognize it.

And it is for that reason that we want to continue supporting. It is extraordinary to be here to be able to speak to that, and I certainly thank the Chairman for bringing this group together so we can speak on the ground with our Ukrainian counterparts about their work, their successes, and their continued fight for their freedom.

Again, it’s consistent with democratic values, American values, and U.S. national security interests.

Video: Former Federal Prosecutor Gene Rossi Says Special Prosecutor Reached the Right Conclusion, But Used “Gratuitous” Language and Took “Classic Cheap Shot, Completely Unnecessary” at President Biden

6

Former Virginia Democratic Lt. Governor candidate and former/long-time federal prosecutor Gene Rossi nails it re: “ former Trump US Attorney/now DOJ Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report on @JoeBiden,” which used language that many people find “superfluous,” “partisan,” etc.:

“It was not necessary, it was gratuitous. I worked for the Dept. of Justice for almost 30 years. And when you make a decision not to charge somebody, you say ‘we’re not charging somebody, the evidence is not there’, and you sit down and shut up. Now he did have a duty to write a report, but he didn’t have a duty to write a report with gratuitous information about the ‘elderly’ and the ‘aged’. And I do feel that the comment about the President not remember when his son passed away, that was a classic cheap shot, completely unnecessary…This reminds me of 1984; in the fall, there were concerns about the age and acuity of President Reagan. So I predict that two debates or three debates between…Trump…and Biden, they will decide the election…[The Special Counsel] got it right. Prosecutor Hur is honest, he’s got integrity, I just think he got a little too excited in the words he used. But this case has zero, ZERO jury appeal and ZERO evidentiary value…He admits in the report that the evidence is relatively, and it is…This case would never even be opened if it weren’t the president of the United States being investigated.”

Virginia House Passes Contraceptive Equity Act

From REPRO Rising Virginia:

Virginia House Passes Contraceptive Equity Act

The bill aims to eliminate cost barriers to contraceptive access and  promote equitable coverage across insurance plans.

Richmond, Virginia– In a major achievement for Reproductive Freedom, the Virginia House of Delegates has passed the Contraceptive Equity Act (HB819) in a bipartisan vote of 65-31, marking a significant step toward enhancing reproductive health equity in the Commonwealth.
The Contraceptive Equity Act addresses critical issues surrounding contraceptive accessibility by eliminating burdensome co-pays, cost-sharing, reimbursement requirements, and coverage delays. By eliminating cost barriers, the legislation ensures that Virginians have the freedom to choose the contraceptive method that best suits their individual needs, ultimately promoting health equity across Virginia.
“Accessible contraception is not just a matter of reproductive autonomy; it is a fundamental aspect of healthcare that addresses a spectrum of needs, from preventing unintended pregnancies to managing various health conditions,” states Tarina Keene, Executive Director of REPRO Rising Virginia. “This commonsense legislation recognizes the diverse health requirements of individuals and ensures that affordable contraceptive options remain within reach for all Virginians.”

“Passage of the Contraceptive Equity Act in the House is a significant victory for reproductive health equity, and our fight to break down financial barriers and ensure that individuals across the Commonwealth have unfettered access to a full spectrum of reproductive healthcare, including contraceptive options. As we celebrate this progress, we remain steadfast in our commitment to championing Pro-Reproductive Freedom measures that empower individuals to make informed decisions about their reproductive health. This legislation is a testament to the power of advocacy and collaboration, and we look forward to continued progress in advancing comprehensive reproductive healthcare for all Virginians.” says Lexi White, Policy Director of REPRO Rising Virginia.

The Senate companion bill passed on Tuesday February 6th in a vote of 23-15.
