How Do You Know when NC Gov Pat McCrory is Lying?

0

How do you know When Pat McCrory is lying?  You know…

We know Pretend Governor Pat McCrory is lying when he moves his lips.  The man charts new territory for dissembling, deception and outright lying. The pretend governor has signed the worst vote suppression bill in the nation, one which is breath-taking for its reach. Take a listen to his You Tube video.

Why do I call him pretend governor?  I do so because the real governor of NC is Koch Brothers’ buddy Art Pope, who has been afforded the position of Budget Director. The budget of NC is entrusted to a Tea Party funder and director for Americans for Prosperity.

I have written about this bill before. I will note I also read the 57-page bill. The governor signed a bill he recently admitted he hadn’t read. And it’s his job.

With his signature, he has especially opened the floodgates for vigilante poll bullies to contest legitimate voters’ casting their votes. Now poll bullies can try to keep individuals from voting. This is the most outrageous vote suppression tactic I have ever seen in any state I have lived in. As Rev Barber says, it is a fundamental attack on our right to vote.

What can you do?  First, get every single voter in your precinct registered.  Help them get their documents. I have joined the NAACP and will re-join the ACLU. I urge all of you to do the same. Support any organization suing to halt this onerous vote suppression. We will not take this lying down. Be on the look out for vote suppression where you live. Virginia will be not far behind, especially if Kookinelli wins.

Norfolk cops assume anyone who reports a rape is lying

0

This article is on Raw Story.  I have quoted most of it.  Sorry if I violate any Blue Virgina rules about copy-and-paste but this is important.

Short version.  Up until recently, Norfolk police were told to treat anyone who reported a sexual assault, including rape, as a liar.  A young woman who was raped was treated that way until DNA testing led to a serial rapist.  Now the department policy has changed.  Of course, this doesn’t mean investigators will change the way they treat anyone who reports.

Go below the fold for the quoted Raw Story article.

http://hamptonroads.com/2013/0…

The city of Norfolk, Virginia only last week changed its official police policy away from assuming that victims of sexual assault are lying about what happened to them. According to Think Progress, Norfolk police classified all sexual assault claims as “unfounded” by default.

The rules changed in the wake of a case involving a 22-year-old woman who reported a sexual assault only to be told by police, “If we find out that you’re lying, this will be a felony charge.”

The woman was attacked in her home by serial rapist and diagnosed sexual sadist Roy Ruiz Loredo on April 22, 2012. Over the course of reporting the crime, police repeatedly expressed skepticism that the woman was telling the truth, even after the woman submitted to an exhaustive physical exam.

“You’re telling us a different story than you told … the other detectives,” they said to her, as well as saying “This only happened hours ago. Why can’t you remember?” Finally in frustration, the woman terminated the interview with police.

However, a forensics investigator was able to lift DNA from the woman’s attacker off of a cup he used at the crime scene. Eight weeks later Loredo was arrested in Virginia Beach, VA when he tried to attack three women near his neighborhood. Police were able to match the DNA from the cup to Loredo.

The attacker pleaded guilty on May 31, 2012 and was sentenced to 36 years, although he has yet to go to trial for the Virginia Beach cases.

In the wake of the department’s mistakes, Norfolk police chief Mike Goldsmith announced that there will be changes in police policy toward sexual assault victims, including the assumption by officers that people who report assaults are telling the truth. Officers will also be trained in helping victims cope with rape trauma and post-traumatic stress.

Post Trayvon/Zimmerman Trial: Thoughts on Race in America

1

( – promoted by lowkell)

What disturbed me most about that whole sad affair was the reaction on the right in the wake of the trial.

No empathy whatever for the distress that black people feel about a young black man getting shot and killed because of a train of events triggered by his doing nothing more than walking through a white neighborhood and then being followed by a “Neighborhood Watch” man who thought he didn’t belong there.

At my otherwise mostly extremely good high school reunion (I just returned from my 50th!), one classmate channeled the right-wing line that President Obama’s talk about “Trayvon could have been me” speech did more damage to race relations in America than anything in recent memory.

Amazing. Besides the complete lack of empathy, and probably connected with it, we see here an insistence on denial of the realities of what the historical experience has been, and the wounds that this experience has left.

Here’s how I see the meaning of the Trayvon killing for black people in America, growing out of many generations of experience.

The present event can be described in these terms: a black man is accosted, and shot to death by a man acting (as he saw it) as an agent of the dominant white world (one valid way of characterizing Zimmerman’s neighborhood watch role).

This represents a pattern associated, from the experience of many generations of black Americans, with deep trauma.

In the time of slavery, slave patrols –into which white Southerners were essentially drafted– to comb the countryside looking for blacks outside the slave quarters. If they did not have papers, they were subject to not only being returned to their owners, but also to being whipped or worse. Also there were slave-catchers, who might kill blacks thus caught.

In the time of Jim Crow, a black man might be lynched for stepping out of the role in which the dominant white culture sought to confine him. A regime of terror punished any black who failed to “know his place.”

That kind of traumatic history leaves its mark. And so, from the vantage point of a people who have absorbed those wounds, the events of recent times –a killing, the lack of any inclination (until pressure was brought to bear) to prosecute, and an eventual acquittal– fit a painful, frightening pattern.

How can any white person who knows that history not understand how painful and distressing such a recapitulation would be for a people whose collective memory is shaped by such experiences?

Today’s right wing had no trouble finding a way. The power of denial is so strong, that they’ve managed to see themselves as the victims entitled to feel outraged.

This gives us yet another glimpse into the psychology cultivated by that “sick and broken spirit.”

Sen. Mark Herring, Dr. John Lazo Make the Case for Embryonic Stem Cell Research in Virginia

0

I just got off a conference call with Virginia’s next Attorney General, Senator Mark Herring, and University of Virginia scientist, Dr. John Lazo, in which they talked about the critical importance of supporting embryonic stem cell research in Virginia – to save lives, to grow our state’s economy, and to keep Virginia competitive. A few key points by Mark Herring included:

*Virginia’s research community should be allowed to use all types of stem cells, including embryonic stem cells.

*Embryonic stem cells are critical not just to developing technologies to help find cures to diseases, but also to encourage companies and innovators to locate here in Virginia.

*”It’s a shame that the Republican ticket would put their own personal ideologies ahead of these types of job-creating proposals.”

*For instance, in 2009, Ken Cuccinelli and Mark Obenshain were “two of just five Senators to vote against a bill I sponsored that would direct more funds towards key areas of research and development and commercialization all because there wasn’t a clause that prohibited funds to go to research that used embryonic stem cells.

*”This is another way that Ken Cuccinelli and Mark Obenshain have put their personal ideologies ahead of what’s best for our communities and our economy.”

*The Democratic ticket will “support research that will make Virginia a global leader in R&D and make it easier for our scientists to bring their technologies to market.”

Dr. John Lazo added:

*Lazo’s work is focused on stem cells to find “new approaches to combat diseases like Alzheimers, cancer, and also to create drugs or substances that could be used to protect populations against an accidental or even an intentional exposure to radiation that might occur through a terrorist use of a dirty bomb for example.”

*”This work is really critical to protecting our health and public safety, and stem cells represent a central, critical part of developing these new technologies here in Virginia…you can’t be competitive nationally or internationally in this field if you don’t embrace this really revolutionary tool to investigate both drugs and biology.”

*”Our leaders in Richmond need to do everything they can to encourage this enabling technology, and that includes all kinds of stem cell research including…embryonic stem cells.”

*”Not being able to use embryonic stem cells for research is like trying to run in lead sneakers; our competitors…have been really advancing the use of it…so this becomes a real liability…really restricts our research.”

*”If our leaders want to keep Virginia as a leader  in research and innovation, they really need to support this type of research.”

I couldn’t agree more; this is a no brainer, frankly. Sad to say, the Republican #ExtremeTeam of Ken Cuccinelli and his clones (Mark Obenshain and EW Jackson) not only don’t support this crucial research, they actually favor a theocratic “personhood” amendment which would effectively outlaw embryonic stem cell research. That, in turn, would kill Virginia’s competitiveness with other states and countries in this burgeoning field, and thus be a major mistake in terms of jobs and the economy. Not that extreme ideologues like Cuccinelli, Jackson and Obenshain care about such mundane things as jobs and the economy (and saving adult lives, as opposed to blastocysts that would, as Michael J. Fox points out in the video above, be thrown out anyway), but the rest of us sure do!

Cuccinelli’s Extreme Agenda Would Harm Virginia Students

4

From the Democratic Party of Virginia…another disaster by Ken Cuccinelli.

Richmond, VA – Today Ken Cuccinelli will roll out an education agenda focused almost on entirely on taking money away from public schools and public students and spending it in private schools. That disastrous plan is an extension of Cuccinelli’s career-long record of putting his own extreme agenda ahead of what’s best for Virginia students, teachers and economy.

“From releasing a tax cut plan that would force dramatic cuts in education, to calling for the abolition of the U.S. Department of Education, Ken Cuccinelli’s education agenda has always had more to do with his extreme agenda than what’s best for Virginia,” said DPVA spokesman Brian Coy. “Virginians need a Governor who recognizes the importance of public education to preparing students to compete and lead in the economy of the future. We can’t afford a Governor who views Virginia’s education system as a launching pad for his extreme agenda.”

Below is a recap of Ken Cuccinelli’s dangerous record on education:

Virginia Education Association: Cuccinelli’s Tax Plan Could Reduce Funding for K-12 by $422 Million. The VEA analysis stated, “The tax plan proposed by gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli could reduce annual state funding for K-12 public education by $422 million, according to a research analysis by the Virginia Education Association.” [VEA Analysis of Cuccinelli Tax Plan]

Virginia Education Association: Cuccinelli’s Tax Plan Could Result in Loss of 6,500 Teachers. VEA President Meg Gruber stated, “The magnitude of those cuts would really hurt our schools and the students who attend them. That $422 million equates to the loss of 6,500 teachers. Fewer teachers mean larger class sizes and less individual attention that students need.” [VEA Analysis of Cuccinelli Tax Plan]

Hampton Mayor: Cuccinelli Tax Plan Would Put “Additional Stress” On Schools. The Mayor of Hampton, Molly Ward, said the proposal would “result in additional stress on municipal budgets for police, fire and schools that our communities cannot afford.” [AP, 5/7/13]

Supported Abolishing the Department of Education. In June 2009, the Washington Post reported, “Cuccinelli, who is a devout Catholic and home-schools four of his seven children, has said he supports abolishing the U.S. Department of Education.” [Washington Post, 6/12/09]

One of Three Senators to Oppose Helping Students At-Risk of Failing. In February 12, 2003, Cuccinelli voted against House Bill 1757, which was a bill to require “school boards to provide programs of prevention, intervention, and remediation for students failing an end-of-course test required for the award of a verified unit of credit needed by the student for graduation.” The bill would require “school boards to provide programs of prevention, intervention, and remediation for students failing an end-of-course test required for the award of a verified unit of credit needed by the student for graduation, however, these students are not required to participate in such programs. School divisions are to add these students to their existing remediation report requirements. Currently, required remediation targets students who are ‘educationally at risk including, but not limited to, those whose scores are in the bottom national quartile on Virginia State Assessment Program Tests and those who fail to achieve a passing score on any Standards of Learning assessment in grades three, five, and eight.’” This bill passed in the state Senate 37 to 3 and in the state House 98 to 0 and became law.  [House Bill 1757, 2003; and Virginia’s Legislative Information System Summary of House Bill 1757, 2003]

Cuccinelli Opposes Spending More than $10,000 Per Pupil, Slammed “Insatiable” “Edu-Crats” for Demanding More Money for Education. He said, “If you can't educate a kid for [$10,000] a year, the problem is not enough money. The 'need' for more money is insatiable among the edu-crats.” [Washington Post, 3/05/04]

One of 14 Senators to Vote against Teacher Pay Increases. In March 2008, Cuccinelli was one of 14 state senators who voted against House Bill 29, which was “a $77 billion, two-year budget” that provided “teacher pay raises, increases in state employee salaries and significant new funds for mental health and public education.”  It included “$22 million to expand prekindergarten access for at-risk 4-year olds.”  [Richmond Times Dispatch, 3/14/08, and House Bill 29, 2008]

Only Senator to Vote against Requiring School Boards to Provide Planning Time to Teachers. In February 2008, Cuccinelli was the only Senator to vote against legislation that would require “school boards to ensure that all school teachers are provided an average of 30 minutes a day of planning time.” The bill passed 38-1 in the Senate and was left in a House Committee. [SB 48, Vote on 2/12/08]

Voted Against Recognizing Teachers’ Licenses from Other States. In 2005, Cuccinelli voted against legislation that would allow Virginia to recognize valid teacher licenses from out-of-state that was active e at the time the application for a Virginia license was made. The bill passed the House 63-35 and the Senate 28-12 and became law. [SB 949, Vote on 2/24/05]

Proposed Amendment to Eliminate Funding for Financial Incentives for Teachers to Pursue Advanced Education Related to Early Childhood Education. In 2008, Cuccinelli proposed an amendment to Senate Bill 30 to eliminate funding in the bill “to provide financial incentives for teachers, teachers assistants, and other early childhood education personnel to pursue advanced education and training related to early childhood education.” [Amendment 338 #2s to Senate Bill 30, 2008]

Last Chance for Cuccinelli, McAuliffe Campaign Shakeups Before the Big Show Begins

4

by Paul Goldman

The latter half of August is campaign shake-up time. Every campaign does it in one form or another. Envision the Virginia governor’s campaign to date as the legendary “off Broadway” run of a play before it gets to the big time, the big Apple, opening night on the big stage. All the previous performances in small towns have been like spring training in baseball or the summer football camp of the Washington Redskins in Richmond. Fun to watch, cheaper seats, more personal interaction among fans with the players, all the stars are there, they perform their parts, trying hard for the most part but everyone knows that if you screw up, there isn’t the same penalty from either the critics, the audience or the Gods of the Game.

To be sure, sometimes the play closes before it ever gets to Broadway. Turns out the script is not savable, the financial backers not “made” of money, the ticket sales the proverbial “canary in the coal mine,” the stars simply not up to the game this time. In that regard, think Reverend E.W. Jackson, the GOP candidate for Lt. Governor. Yes, I know the polls seemingly show that he isn’t that far behind Democrat Ralph Northam, and so in theory, Reverend J along with his many backers among the GOP activist set believe he is merely an underdog, as opposed to DCW (Dead Candidate Walking).

“Hope springs eternal” goes the saying and in a fairer world, guys like me would allow Reverend J and his Jacksonians to have their dreams. But at 200-proof politics, we do the Fox News thing honestly. By that I mean: their slogan is “We Report, You decide.” But in truth, Fox News is based on a different equation: We Tell You What To Think By Giving You The News That Fits That Thinking. So on Reverend Jackson, we play Fox News  Honest Version This Morning: He is going to lose and lose large. The only question is whether he loses with dignity, or he goes out the way he came into statewide politics. That is, trashing everyone he doesn’t like, lashing out at the VA GOP for abandoning him. But what does he expect, given that he is utterly unqualified for a job that barely requires any qualifications?

Forget the polls saying that on Reverend J isn’t that far behind Doctor Northam: the reason he gets to be on the stage this Fall when the play gets to Broadway is that he has a no-cut contract. So he has to have a part in the play. But it will be as a sure loser. His campaign then doesn’t need a shake-up, or even a wake-up: it just needs to be over as soon as this can be done legally in Virginia.

But as to the other four state-wide candidates, they will be there on opening night in lead roles as Labor Day ends and as the general election campaign officially begins. So lets concentrate today on Ken Cuccinelli and the Terry McAuliffe, two guys who the media seem to hold in maximum low regard. Are they really as bad as the media seems determined to portray? No, the media has gone way overboard in my view, and it isn’t even game time yet. They aren’t blogs, they aren’t tabloids, they are (allegedly) the mainstream news. It has been brutal, and it ain’t even started yet.

It figures to get worse, not better, in the future. Each side of course tends to focus on the bad press for the opponent, rationalizing their own press as “it be worse.” Sure, anything could be worse: you could be dead. Trust me guys: It can’t get any worse, yet it will. Cuccinelli and McAuliffe have received the worse press of any candidates for Governor in the run up to the Labor Day opening in the HISTORY OF VIRGINIA. If you don’t believe me – what a shock – then go back and read the papers yourself, or talk to Dr. Sabato. It’s true: and it only figures to get worse.

Neither side quite gets it for one reason: our gifted Governor, and his W—–T—– wife, the biggest embarrassments in the history of the Virginia Governor’s Mansion in the post-segregation era. They are so bad, the next Governor HAS TO be better in the minds of the public. The First Family’s best scenario right now: avoiding indictment, and holding onto their public housing until evicted in January. That’s the Best Case for them. In comparison, even former Governor “Deficit Jim” Gilmore looks better.

Having run a few of these statewide races before, I think the Kenster and the Terrymacker have gotten some bad advice on this basic score. They should have been far more up-front with the voters about what they knew would be in the media by failing to be upfront.  Should they change that? I believe they should, since the alternative is to stoke the media to keep up their narrative even more so into the Fall.

Strategy wise, Terrymacker has the tougher mid-course correction because of the nature of the Virginia press. All the major papers except the Richmond Times Dispatch will back the entire Democratic ticket. So they will want to make sure their news coverage in the Fall can’t be labeled “anti-Cuccinelli.” So they will be unnecessary hard on the McAuliffe. That’s not fair given the facts: but it is what it is.

On the other hand, Kenster’s problem is that he has the easier mid-course correction to make. Thus, by not making it, he gives the press the easier free fire zone. In that regard, I refer to the self-evident: Fair or not, Cuccinelli has to give back in some form the $18K in gifts he took from Jonnie Williams (once Willie The Wonderfullest family friend according to Governor McDonnell, but now Willie The Rat, in league with the prosecutors to ruin McDonnell according to His Excellency’s less than excellent Big Time PR guy).

Any way you cut it, Ken has to give the money back, or the press will ride him harder and harder until election day. Giving back the money isn’t easy at this stage, and to do it basically tells your campaign strategy folks: you guys have ruined me to date by not giving me the right advice.

According to Ken’s top strategy guy, he would have given it back but he doesn’t have the money. Could you come up with a worse excuse even if you were Reverend Jackson? The point being: Sometimes a campaign shakeup involves personnel, sometimes your message, sometimes a little of both. Always it is cosmetic, in that what the public sees is never quite the true story in terms what is really happening inside the shakeup.

But the bottom line is this. Tmacker would not be in his current situation with the press had he had more folks better schooled in Virginia politics than national politics. Once he figures that out, he can deal a lot better with stuff in my view.

As for Cuccinelli, his problem is simple: He needs to take his hit, give the money back, and clear the decks for the Fall.

Terry’s winning right now, so he is less likely to want to do anything different. I get that. Cuccinelli’s losing, so his people are less likely to want to admit that and thus do anything different since it would be an admission. I get that too. But late August in campaigns was designed to give you one last chance to tinker with the script, the actors, the image before opening on Broadway. History says it is a good opportunity to take, as it doesn’t come back after Labor Day.

Virginia News Headlines: Tuesday Morning

5

Here are a few Virginia (and national) news headlines, political and otherwise, for Tuesday, August 13. And yeah, even though I’m not a big football fan, let alone a fan of anything to do with Daniel Snyder, I just had to post that photo of two irrepressible forces of nature (T-Mac and RGIII) – click to “embiggen.”

*Rep. Dana Rohrabacher competes in crowded field for dumbest climate-change denier in Congress (Sadly, the Republican Party is filled with people like this who have utter contempt for science and who have sold their souls to the fossil fuel industry. Virginia’s #1 example of this: Ken Cuccinelli, who denies climate science, who continually lies about an imaginary “war on coal,” who constantly makes erroneous claims about renewable energy, etc, etc.).

*They Deny Climate Science. Why Won’t Reporters Call Them Science Deniers? (“Why do reporters tiptoe around politicians who attack climate science by calling them ‘skeptics’? As if they might judiciously change their minds depending on what in NOAA’s next set of satellite data? Dana Rohrabacher is a science-denying shill for industrial carbon polluters. It’s OK to say that!”)

*Clinton Calls for Action to Protect Voter Rights (“Mrs. Clinton, in remarks delivered at the American Bar Association conference here, condemned the recent Supreme Court ruling on the Voting Rights Act, which has paved the way for states to pass laws that would require voters to present government-issued photo identification at the polls.”)

*GOP Congressman: The House Would ‘Impeach The President Tomorrow’ If Given The Opportunity (More evidence the Teapublican Party is suffering from a severe case of Obama Derangement Syndrome.)

*McDonnell: Virginia’s Cash Reserve to Approach $1B

*Inspector general still investigating AG advice to landowners in gas royalty case

*Cuccinelli’s K-12 education plan would let Virginia parents take over failing schools (“Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli II plans to unveil a 12-point education plan on Tuesday that would push for charter schools, offer voucher-like scholarships for preschoolers, and empower a majority of parents to close down, convert or overhaul their children’s failing school, according to an outline of his K-12 education plan.” All bad ideas, as far as I can tell…)

*McAuliffe praises Redskins deal, sidesteps GreenTech questions

*McDonnell finds friendly audiences in Southside swing (“McDonnell travels Va. touting accomplishments of his administration”)

*Candidates to roll out policy initiatives today (“McAuliffe to talk about biotech, Cuccinelli will address K-12 education”)

*High hopes unrealized for McAuliffe’s car company (OK, guys? We’ve now seen essentially the same story, about a business that hasn’t quite lived up to expectations – shocker in a capitalist system, I know! – but there’s still no “there there.”)

*China export deal in Chesapeake expected today

*Anti-Immigration Rally Kicks Off Push to Block Changing U.S. Law (Super-bigot Steve King comes to Richmond. Blech.)

*Winston officially quits Henrico board

*Victim’s ordeal prompts shift in sex assault policy in Norfolk

*Governor’s son fined $25 (“Attorney: Rough terrain, aiding girlfriend were factors in why he appeared unsteady”)

*Ready or not? Shanahan says he’ll have final word on RGIII

*Forecast: Clouds and storms roll in (“Scattered rain and some downpours are likely before a gorgeous day tomorrow.”)

Video: Ken Cuccinelli Takes the Big Lie to Another Level

0

Do Ken Cuccinelli, Chris LaCivita and Company really have THIS little respect for the voters of Virginia’s intelligence?  I mean, seriously, listen to the following bull****, uttered with 100% FALSE sincerity by the guy who’s basically a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Koch brothers, CONSOL Energy, Alpha Natural Resources, Dominion Power, Altria, and other very rich corporations and right wingnut individuals. This is also the guy whose tax plan would devastate education, health care, etc. in order to give a huge tax cut to the wealthiest Virginians. Yet this same guy has the unimitigated gall to say the following?!?

*”Our tax code should encourage middle class families and small businesses, not reward the powerful and well connected”

*”Special interests should not get special treatment.”

My god. This is utterly shameless – the Big Lie taken to its theoretical limit of Big Lyingness. I don’t even know what to say anymore. Of course, this is the same wacko who denies climate science,  who falsely claims there’s a “war on coal,” who thinks LGBT people are “soulless”, who believes women should have no control over their own bodies, who has consistently abused the powers of his office (while wasting a ton of taxpayer money growing his staff, pursuing wild goose hunts, and persecuting UVA Professor Michael Mann), and who has been involved in not one but TWO corruption scandals (Bobby Thompson/fake “Navy Veterans” charity and Jonnie Williams/Star Scientific) since 2009. This is also the guy who tries one minute to distance himself from the utterly insane EW Jackson, then the next minute – when he thinks nobody’s recording what he has to say – pledges undying loyalty to that guy.

So, no, Ken Cuccinelli has no shame. Nor does he have a scintilla of honesty in his entire body. I mean, seriously, this guy makes pathological liar Willard “Mitt” Romney look like Honest Abe. The only question is, how many Virginian will be fooled by Ken Cuccinelli’s Big Lie on November 5? Hopefully, not many.

Contempt for Environment: It’s Taken Hold in a State Near You and It’s Spreading!

7

North Carolina is in a race to the bottom-again!  I’ve told you how it suspended the Jordan Lake rules, years in the making, because some upstream polluters don’t care if Cary, Morrisville and Apex Citizens have clean drinking water. And they have deep pockets. The rules for the lake had barely gone into effect when the GOP leaders in the GA claimed they didn’t “work” and voted to suspend them. While the worst governor in America runs ads pretending to care about water quality, he and the GA have installed a contemptuous regulatory staff, which merely pretends to regulate and oversee water quality. Thanks to a grudging GA, already in place since 2010, the disregard for clean water was already in place before this governor took office though. He’s just helping make it all worse. Now there’s more in the ever-worsening picture for NC water quality. I’ll quote the Raleigh News and Observer to show you I do not exaggerate:

Once an innovative leader in water quality science, North Carolina has fallen behind in meeting federal pollution standards.

North Carolina is the only state in its EPA region – which includes Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida – that has not adopted EPA-approved rules on measuring toxic metals like arsenic, cadmium, copper, silver and zinc in its water, according to a letter the EPA sent on July 31 to Tom Reeder, the director of the Division of Water Resources, within the state Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Read more here

There’s more below the fold…

Worse than Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi and Alabama! You have to tried hard to accomplish that dishonor.

The state Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is supposed to have public hearings and the make proposals to improve water quality every three years. As the News and Observer notes, though, “proposed changes are not a fix.” But the bottom line is the state must at minimum meet the requirements of the Clean Water Act.  NC isn’t doing that much anymore.

The head of the Water Resources planning division states that what’s holding things up is a 2011 bill complicating the requirement that the state identify the financial impact of any changes before they can go into effect. It seems are directed at grinding improved water quality to a halt. But, the former head of this office had completed the budget for the proposed changes in 2011 before she left office.  She couldn’t understand why the hearing hasn’t happened yet.  Hmmm. Can we say obstruction?

On top of all that, there are also now friends of horizontal fracking throughout state government, especially in the Mining and Energy Commission (MEC) where friends of fracking hold every seat. And they do not care about the consequences to real people under the long reach of the horizontal arms of fracking wells. They reach 1-2 miles outward.

For all these reasons, water quality is in peril in North Carolina. Our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren are depending upon us doing better. Heck, the poor recent track record will impact those of us alive now too. Legacy matters. I love my beautiful state.  I will work to defend her and change this harmful direction.  But know this: Its’ easier to avoid rather than reverse bad governance. Don’t NC Virginia (any more than Virginia already has slid backwards). Virginia cannot afford a Cuccinelli governorship. The man doesn’t even believe in science much less environmental quality.

Mo Elleithee “Jumping back into the fight”

0

I’m definitely glad to see this news, that Democratic politico Mo Elleithee – based in DC but having worked on numerous Virginia campaigns – will soon be the new Communications Director at the Democratic National Committee. Mo is a top-notch communicator, including on cable news shout fests, where he calmly but firmly – to paraphrase Harry Truman – doesn’t give them Hell, he just tells the truth about them and they think it’s Hell! Anyway, congratulations and best of luck to Mo in giving them…the truth, of course. 🙂

When Nick Baldick and I teamed up to start Hilltop Public Solutions in January of 2006, I knew we were starting something special. Today, seven and half years later, I’m proud to see Hilltop has emerged as one of the top public affairs and political consulting firms in the nation. We’ve grown from a small office suite in Georgetown, to offices in Washington, New York, Boston, Denver, Montana and Oregon. We’ve got one of the best staffs in the country, and our success is entirely due their innovation and hard work.  I’m honored to know and work with each and every one of them.

But life is full of transitions, and this seems like a good a time as any to take a temporary pause from the firm to pursue a new challenge.

At the end of this week I’ll be taking a leave of absence from Hilltop to become the new Communications Director at the Democratic National Committee.

I couldn’t be more thrilled or humbled, and I know I’ve got the misfortune of trying to follow in the huge footsteps of Brad Woodhouse, who set a new standard in his five years in the job.

But I’m eager to join Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz and the rest of the outstanding DNC team to help advance President Obama’s agenda, and support our great Democratic candidates to secure victories up and down the ticket. Whether its implementing health care reform, fighting for an economic agenda that will help the middle class, pushing for comprehensive immigration reform, protecting voting rights, or ensuring equal rights for all Americans – Democrats are leading the way.  This is an exciting time for the Democratic Party, and I’m excited to help share that story.

You can reach me at my Hilltop email address until the end of this week. After that, you can find me over at the DNC communications shop once I get settled. (That is if you don’t find me on Twitter first @moelleithee!)

Thanks!
