As Kaine Campaign Announces “Record-Breaking $2.5M” Raised in 1Q24, USA Today Publishes Devastating Exposé of Extremist Hung Cao, One of the Leading Contenders for the 2024 VA GOP US Senate Nomination

10

While the Kaine campaign announces (see press release, below) that it raised “a record-breaking $2.5M” in the first quarter of 2024 and has $8.7 million cash-on-hand, check out this devastating exposé on one of the leading Republican contenders (Hung Cao) to take on Sen. Kaine this November – and how slimy, sketchy, unscrupulous, etc. he is. A few highlights include:

  • “According to the Federal Election Commission and Virginia’s State Board of Election filings, not a single Republican candidate for state or local office received any direct financial support from [Cao’s] federal Unleash America super PAC.”
  • In February 2023, Cao had “pledged that Unleash America would support Republicans in 2023 in ‘a lot of the races that people wrote off,'” and in 2023, “Unleash America super PAC received $103,489 in individual contributions last year, according to Federal Election Commission filings,” but…nope, “It doesn’t look like Unleash American spent any money at all to support Virginia’s 2023 candidates.”
  • “When asked why money raised by Unleash America did not go to support state candidates,” the general counsel for Cao’s campaign falsely claimed that, because “Unleash America” is a federally registered super PAC, it “cannot make contributions to any campaign whatsoever” (in fact, “Virginia has no limits on campaign contributions“).
  • etc.

Unfortunately, this isn’t at all surprising for Hung Cao, when you consider stuff like this:

So yeah, let’s make damn sure we don’t just reelect Sen. Kaine this November, but do so OVERWHELMJINGLY!

Kaine For Virginia Has $8.7M On Hand, Raising A Record-Breaking $2.5M In Q1

Richmond, VA — Kaine for Virginia is announcing raising over $2.5 million in the first quarter of 2024 and has $8.7 million cash-on-hand for Senator Kaine’s re-election. This is Tim Kaine’s best election year first quarter of his Senate career.

The record-breaking haul was fueled by the most individual online donations for Tim Kaine ever in a quarter, with 25,402 individual donors contributing to the campaign.

“Virginians are standing with Senator Tim Kaine because he has stood with them in their neighborhoods, libraries, and living rooms fighting to cut taxes for working families, slashing the cost of prescription drugs, supporting military families, and protecting reproductive freedom,” said Keren Charles Dongo, Campaign Manager for Tim Kaine. “This strong fundraising quarter is more proof that Virginians are united behind Tim Kaine and are fired up and ready to send him back to the U.S. Senate so he can continue to stand up for Virginia.”

In the fourth quarter, the average grassroots contribution was $37 and more than 98 percent of donors made contributions of $100 or less. There were over 10,738 first-time donors to Kaine in this period.

Big endorsement for Abigail Spanberger – by Clean Virginia:

BREAKING: Clean Virginia Endorses Abigail Spanberger for Governor
Rep. Spanberger’s record demonstrates her dedication to ethics reform and clean energy

Charlottesville, VA – Clean Virginia announced today its endorsement of U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger to serve as the next governor of Virginia — pledging an initial contribution of $250,000 from Clean Virginia Fund, the Political Action Committee associated with Clean Virginia.

“I’m honored to receive the endorsement of Clean Virginia, which joins thousands of Virginians from across our Commonwealth in supporting our campaign. As our next governor, I look forward to working with all Virginians to make our Commonwealth a true leader in cleaner and more affordable energy — as well as an economic powerhouse when it comes to securing the jobs of the future. Virginia has a tremendous opportunity to lead the way,” said Rep. Spanberger.

“Clean Virginia is proud to endorse Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger. Throughout her distinguished career in public service, Representative Spanberger has always worked to deliver results and put Virginians first. She has also been a critical voice for bringing together industry leaders, environmental organizations and business groups to find common ground, combat climate change and build a more resilient economy. Future Governor Spanberger will focus on policies that have a tangible impact on the lives of all Virginians — ensuring every family benefits from environmental sustainability, lower energy costs and a government that responds to the people,” said Clean Virginia Executive Director Brennan Gilmore.

Congresswoman Spanberger has represented Virginia’s Seventh District in Congress for three terms, which included two terms as Chair of the U.S. House Agriculture Committee’s Conservation and Forestry Subcommittee.

Rep. Spanberger has championed bipartisan efforts to promote good governance, eliminate conflicts of interest, strengthen support for sustainable agriculture and conservation practices and support new clean energy jobs. She has also been a tireless defender of critical clean energy and conservation funding made possible through the landmark Inflation Reduction Act. Further, Rep. Spanberger’s long-held stance of not accepting corporate PAC donations demonstrates that she is a leader on an issue that recent polling indicates 92 percent of Virginians identify as important: limiting the influence of money in politics.

Clean Virginia endorses statewide candidates based on a variety of criteria, including responses to a candidate questionnaire, public statements and legislative records (for incumbents). All Clean Virginia-endorsed candidates share a principled and public commitment against accepting contributions from and owning stock in Virginia’s regulated electric utility monopolies, Dominion Energy and Appalachian Power Company.

Virginia Elected Officials, Candidates Respond to Iranian “Reckless” Attack on Israel, Call for Mike Johnson to Bring Aid Package to a Vote Immediately

17

See below for reactions by Virginia elected officials and candidates to Iran’s attack on Israel last night. I’ll add more as I see them. By the way, if you’re running for Congress, you really SHOULD be weighing in on major events like this, for starters so that voters know how you’d respond in a crisis, how your mind works, etc.

Sen. Mark Warner says “Tonight’s response to Iran’s reckless attacks demonstrates the continued commitment by the U.S. to Israel’s security. We stand with the Israeli people and support Israel’s right to defend itself while seeking to avoid further escalation in an already volatile region.”

Sen. Tim Kaine: “Congress has got to finally pass this supplemental bill that the Senate passed two months ago. If we can do that, we can provide aid for Israel to defend itself against Iran and for Ukraine to defend itself against Russia. But the key is defense. We don’t need Israel going on more offense right now against Iran, because you know how tensions are already escalating…the last thing we need is more escalation. So we stood with Israel to help them knock down the attacks from Iranian soil on Israel. Now is the time for deescalation. That means getting to this hostage deal, cease fire that will promote humanitarian aid and a deescalation in the region….Trump made one of the most disastrous decisions in the history of US foreign policy, it’s made the region dramatically less safe. And I’ve got friends all over the region including in Israel who point that out. So sure, he’s going to go out and mouth off just like he’s mouthing off about being proud that he destroyed Roe v Wade. Let him keep mouthing off.  I think this is a time where Americans are glad that there’s somebody in office who is careful and cautious, who has a great team around him, and isn’t doing the tough work of diplomacy by whatever stray thought crosses his mind at any point in time…Now what we need to see from Hamas is a hostage release. We’ve got to have a hostage release and a cease fire. Hamas, it appears they don’t want to do the hostage release. Every time we get close, Hamas sort of backs away or throws up some new obstacle, and I have my intution about what may be going on with this. But hopefully the globe and regional leaders like Egypt and Qatar will see  the escalation of this weekend as we got to put pressure on hostage release for cease fire, more humanitarian aid into Gaza, that will then lead to deescalation in the region and the opening of a discussion about a future for Palestinian autonomy…My immediate concern is, I hope Israel heeds President Biden’s advice and doesn’t decide to further escalate the situation. I was so worried when Israel took the strike in Damascus. I believe they took the strike against people that had maybe had some planning role in October 7. So I get those would be people that Israel would want to go after. But the timing seemed very, very unfortunate to me because we already have a raging brushfire with escalation throughout the region…I hope Prime Minister Netanyahu would listen to President Biden…and not make the matter worse.”

Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA07) says, in response to Iran’s attack on Israel: “@SpeakerJohnson must bring the U.S. Senate-passed bipartisan national security supplemental for an immediate vote in the U.S. House”

VA07 Dem candidate, former Del. Elizabeth Guzman, weighs in re: Iran’s attack on Israel: “I stand with our party’s leadership in the House, condemning Iran’s hostility to peace and total disregard for stability in the region”

VA10 Dem candidate David Reid weighs in on Iran’s attack against Israel, says “We must remain steadfast in our support for Israel, the Israeli people, and we condemn Iran for trying to draw the United States into a larger regional conflict.”

VA07 Dem candidate Eugene Vindman weighs in on Iran’s attack against Israel, says “We must stand with Israel as it faces an attack from Iran and its proxies. ”

VA10 Democratic candidate, former VA Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn says “We must stand by our ally…Am yisrael chai!”

Youngkin tweets in support of Israel, while his party’s leader (Trump) and the Republican Speaker are pro-Putin, who is a close ally of Iran’s, and also holding up an aid package to Ukraine, Israel, etc. Also, of course, Republicans killed the nuclear nonproliferation deal with Iran, so now Iran is SUPER close to building nuclear bombs.

Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA11) calls for Speaker Johnson to stop “playing politics” and bring the “bipartisan national security supplemental package” to the floor, ASAP.

The abysmally bad (amoral and slimy, among other things) Rep. Jen Kiggans (R-VA02) says we need to support Israel, but her party’s been blocking a major aid package for like 6 months now, so…whatever.

LG Winsome Sears says “Please pray for Israel” (while her party has blocked an aid package for like 6 months now)

The relentlessly odious, irresponsible Jason Miyares is all but SALIVATING at the prospect of a full-fledged war, chaos and bloodshed in the Middle East. This guy should NOT be in a position of authority of any kind.

Insurrectionist/extremist VA05 candidate John McGuire (R) says “No more playing politics. Support Israel now!,” as HIS PARTY has “played politics” on a massive aid package for 6 months now. McGuire’s primary opponent, christofascist Rep. Bob Good (R-VA05), says “Pray for Israel” and wildly lies about House Republicans failing to pass an aid package.

VA10 Dem candidate, Del. Dan Helmer: “Tonight’s attack by Iran reinforces the need for American leadership and for us to stand with our allies. The House must approve the bill to send aid to Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan immediately.”

Sunday News: “Biden blasts ‘brazen attack’ and backs Israel’s security,” “now seeks diplomatic response”; “History in the making with debut of Donald Trump: criminal defendant”; Trump Supporters “trapped inside a hopeless doom loop of disinformation”

VA Senators, Delegates Rip Gov. Youngkin’s Veto of Bill That Would Have Closed “Boyfriend Loophole,” for “put[ting] victims of sexual and domestic abuse in grave danger”

12

Great program – and an important one too – yesterday by Doorways, whose goal is “Creating pathways out of homelessness, domestic violence, and sexual assault”:

“Domestic violence and guns are a lethal combination. But the violence is preventable. That was the core message of a press event hosted by the Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance at Doorways on Friday, April 11th. Virginia lawmakers and advocates came together to discuss the deadly intersections of intimate partner violence and gun violence, and lethal legal loopholes that persist in the Commonwealth. Visit www.doorwaysva.org/disarm-dv to learn more and watch video recording of the event.”

So definitely check out the video, here, as well as highlights of the event – which included Delegate Elizabeth Bennett-Parker (D-HD05); Sen. Russet Perry (D-SD31); Sen. Barbara Favola (D-SD40); Del. Adele McClure (D-HD02); etc. The purpose of the event was to discuss this deplorable, completely unforgiveable situation caused by MAGA Glenn Youngkin:

Virginia Governor Glenn Younkin put victims of sexual and domestic abuse in grave danger when he drastically cut funding for victim service agencies in his proposed budget amendments and by vetoing HB 46 and SB 47 as well as HB 362 and SB 642, bills that would have closed deadly loopholes in Virginia gun laws. Consequently, Virginia’s victims of domestic violence continue to live in clear and present danger of being shot and/or killed by their abuser due to the Governor’s decisions.”

Appalling. Here’s what the elected officials at yesterday’s event had to say:

Sen. Barbara Favola: “My Senate bill 47 was a law-and-order bill. It was incredibly disappointing to learn that the governor vetoed that bill.” “Fully one-third of Virginians are, at some point, endangered by the people with whom they share their lives. I am deeply disappointed that when given the opportunity to better protect innocent lives, uphold our laws against domestic abusers and lift up families, this administration has instead turned its back on women and families.” “This is a matter of life and death.”

Del. Elizabeth Bennett-Parker: “Our focus was clear – we wanted to protect survivors of domestic violence from gun violence and save lives. I am deeply disappointed that Governor Youngkin decided to veto these basic accountability measures.” “Gov. Youngkin claims to support our law enforcement and victims of crime. This bill was an opportunity prove that…Nearly 1/3 of all homicides in Virginia are domestic-violence related and nearly 2/3 of those involve a firearm. These deaths are preventable. It’s past time that we give law enforcement, courts and advocates the tools that they need to enforce and implement the laws and to save lives…The bills would NOT have affected law-abiding gun owners. The governor’s veto means that illegal guns will remain in the hands of armed abusers and will make our Commonwealth less safe. Gov. Youngkin had his chance to stand up for survivors of domestic violence but he turned his back…Our Commonwealth deserves better.”

Sen. Russet Perry: “During my years as a prosecutor, I fought day-in and day-out to protect victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. I walked alongside them and bore witness to tragedy after tragedy. I also shared in their righteous anger when gaps in Virginia’s laws left them vulnerable to abuse. In Richmond, we have the power to fill those gaps, protect victims and save lives. That’s what SB 642 would have done: closed the boyfriend loophole and saved lives. The Governor’s veto does nothing to preserve public safety, but it will cost lives that could have been saved had he instead signed these bills into law.” “What matters is action, what matters is what you do…and in this case, the governor chose to take the side of abusers…the [NRA] instead of the very folks I know I was elected to stand up for and that he was elected to stand up for. And there’s no excuse for it, there’s no explanation for it. Certainly I’m not going to give him one and neither should any of you. This is not a partisan issue. The only place I know that it’s partisan is in the governor’s mansion. 90%…of Americans believe the boyfriend loophole should be closed…41 states and DC have managed to do it; Virginia is so far behind the curve that you can’t see us…We will not be deterred, we will not be dissuaded by the governor’s indifference, by his acquiescence to the slaughter of intimate partners and victims of domestic violence. And I will carry this bill year after year until we in Virginia have a governor who has the courage to stand up and have the words that they say, the things that come out of their mouth, match the things that they do.”

Del. Adele McClure: “I cannot possibly think of a valid reason for vetoing a bill that would have closed a lethal loophole and saved so many lives. The governor believes that the status quo is sufficient…and with the stroke of his pen he silenced many voices…and many folks who will be impacted by this. And he confirmed that survivors do not deserve to be protected from domestic abusers if they are not married. There are 4.5 million women in this country who have been threatened by a firearm by an intimate partner – myself included. The status quo is not sufficient. We must disarm domestic abusers, whether married or not. The governor’s veto of these bills protects abusers and undermines public safety, which he pretends to care about…As lawmakers, it is our duty to protect the citizens from abuse and from angry and armed partners, including those in dating relationships and cohabitants. It is evident that Gov. Glenn Youngkin does not trust women, he does not care to protect women, and he does not have the interest of women and survivors around the Commonwealth in mind. This was a deadly veto…made by the governor…when over 1/2 of all female homicide are killed by an intimate partner…We will never stop fighting…to close [the boyfriend loophole]…So I am very angry, because hearing stories…around the Commonwealth, and for the governor to then take his pen and easily dismisss and ignore those stories is heartbreaking; it’s as if he didn’t even care, he just turned his back and said the status quo is sufficient, and it is not.”

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING: Vice President Harris ‘Hammering’ Donald Trump in Arizona: “Enough with the Gaslighting”

5

From the Biden-Harris 2024 reelection campaign:

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING: Vice President Harris ‘Hammering’ Donald Trump in Arizona: “Enough with the Gaslighting”

Last night, in Tucson, Arizona, Vice President Harris held Donald Trump directly responsible for the reality he created in Arizona, where women will soon be living under an extreme 1864 abortion ban that provides no exceptions for rape, incest, or the health of the mother. The vice president’s comments came shortly after Trump bragged that he “broke Roe” and said the extreme abortion bans that resulted are “working the way it is supposed to.”

In her speech, Vice President Harris made it clear that Donald Trump and his MAGA allies are to blame for stripping women of their right to reproductive health care, saying: “We must all understand who is to blame. Former President Donald Trump did this.” On the idea that Trump may not sign a national abortion ban if reelected, Vice President Harris had a clear message: “Enough with the gaslighting.”

Take a look at what they are saying about Vice President Harris’ powerful remarks in Arizona last night below:

On Arizona Front Pages

On the Airwaves

On CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Kate Bedingfield: “[Vice President Kamala Harris is] She’s excellent. I mean, I think this is an issue that she clearly feels very passionately about and it’s not a surprise when a candidate, when an elected official, feels really strongly about something, they are an effective messenger. They deliver it with passion. I think you certainly saw that from her in Arizona today, and I would note the fact that that her team moved so quickly to get her to Arizona, it is not easy and it’s not simple to move the Vice President quickly. There’s a lot of security, logistics, existing conflicts on her schedule that make it hard to move quickly. So the fact that she wanted to be so nimble and get there quickly and really drive this again just reinforces what an effective message and issue this is for the Biden-Harris campaign. But also I think it’s a reflection of how strongly she feels about this. And so that makes her a powerful messenger.”

On MSNBC’s Alex Wagner Tonight, Alex Wager: “Today at a campaign rally in Tucson, Arizona, Vice President Kamala Harris went on the offensive. Just three days after the Arizona Supreme Court ruled the state’s 1864 abortion ban is enforceable, Vice President Harris made it abundantly clear there is one person responsible for all of this: former President Donald trump. She also argued women’s rights and basic freedoms depend on keeping Trump out of the White House.”

On ABC News, Selina Wang: “The campaign, they are being very nimble on this. They are trying to use every opportunity to get the abortion message out. And this is where we’re really seeing Vice President Harris shine. This is where they are putting her at the forefront while you’ve seen President Biden take a back seat at this. They are letting Vice President Harris be the target of the Republican attacks, but also be the carrier of this message as a woman herself, the first female Vice President. She is taking this message. She has been on a nationwide tour about women’s reproductive health rights. She also had visited an abortion clinic last month. So she is the one to deliver this message. This is her key focus going forward.”

ON MSNBC’s The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell, Katie Phang: “This afternoon, Vice President Kamala Harris, the highest elected female official in our country, lambasted Donald Trump in a fiery speech in Arizona, blasting the state Supreme Court’s decision to uphold a civil rights [war] -era, near-total abortion ban.”

Vice President Kala Harris: “We must all understand who is to blame. Former President Donald Trump did this. During his campaign in 2016, Donald Trump said women should be punished for seeking an abortion. Don’t forget that. He said women should be punished. As President, Donald Trump hand-picked three members of the United States Supreme Court because he intended — intended for them to overturn Roe. And as he intended, they did.”

Donald Trump: “If you look at what we’ve done with Roe v Wade, we did something that everyone said couldn’t be done, and we got it done. And I give great credit to the Supreme Court and the Justices for having the courage to do it.”

Katie Phang: “Courage? More like cruelty. But that is the point. Stripping women of their rights to life-saving health care using a draconian law. Think about it. 160 years ago, when this law was originally enacted, Arizona was a territory. Women had no power, and Vice President Harris, she would have been a slave. According to the Guttmacher Institute, an estimated 18 million women do not have abortion access in their state. But here’s the thing. This isn’t 1864. It is 2024, women wield power. They hold office, and when they speak out they are heard.”

On CNN’s Newsroom with Kim Brunhuber, Amara Walker: “As soon as the Arizona Supreme Court abortion ban ruling came down, Vice President Kamala Harris immediately announced that she would be traveling to Arizona. She did so on Friday. And of course she condemned this abortion ban, calling it one of the biggest aftershocks yet since Roe v. Wade was overturned. And of course she pointed a finger straight at Trump. […] So the Biden campaign launched the seven-figure ad buy in Arizona following this ruling. But talk to us about how the Biden campaign, Stephen, sees this as a really potent issue that will mobilize moderate and women voters especially in battleground states like Arizona.”

On NewsNation, Morning In America with Adrienne, Hena Doba: “Those are forceful comments demanding change by Vice President Kamala Harris. It was in Arizona. It comes after this week’s ruling by Arizona’s Supreme Court overturning abortion rights in that very state. That decision reenacts a 160 year-old ban that was put in place when Arizona was still a territory. […] It’s an issue that state legislatures across the nation are debating on whether to enforce new restrictions of their own.”

On CNN’s This Morning Weekend, Pricilla Alverez: “The Vice President’s trip to Tucson, Arizona provided a window into 2024 and how Democrats are going to frame the issue of abortion and also hit back against former President Donald Trump. Only moments before the Vice President took the stage, Donald Trump said that he broke Roe v. Wade and also said that states are doing what they’re supposed to on this issue. The Vice President taking aim at the former president for his remarks.”

Vice President Harris: “Just minutes ago, standing beside Speaker Johnson, Donald Trump just said the collection of state bans is quote ‘working the way it is supposed to.’ And as much harm as he has already caused, a second Trump term would be even worse. Donald Trump’s friends in the United States Congress are trying to pass a national ban. And understand a national ban would outlaw abortion in every state. Even states like New York and California. And now Trump wants us to believe he will not sign a national ban. Enough with the gaslighting. Enough with the gaslighting.”

Pricilla Alvarez: “The vice president also said that Donald Trump wants to take the United States back to the 1800s, casting the state supreme court ruling as an inflection point and also tying the former president to these unpopular abortion bans across the country, calling them ‘trump, abortion bans.’ Now of course, this a […] salient political issue for the Biden campaign, and one that they’re trying to seize on heading into November. In fact, in the state of Arizona, they are pouring more money into abortion-related ads and planning to air those in the battleground state. Now the Vice President in particular has been uniquely positioned on this issue. She began tackling it shortly after Roe was overturned, but also at the beginning of this year with her reproductive freedoms tour, where has already done six stops nationwide.”

On Scripps News, Haley Bull: “Vice President Harris drawing sharp contrast to former President Trump on abortion as the campaign invests time and media in the state that President Biden narrowly won in 2020 and that could be critical for 2024 […] Vice President Kamala Harris on the attack that Trump is responsible for the chaos on abortion laws across the country. Democrats have won elections on this issue in the past two years […] Harris’s pre scheduled campaign appearance in Tucson comes days after Arizona’s Supreme Court upheld a civil war-era law banning abortion.”

On CNN’s The Lead with Jake Tapper, Dave Chalian: “Three arguments were really clear there. It’s Donald Trump’s fault that that’s clear as MJ noted, Donald Trump is gaslighting you and lying to you when he says that he won’t sign a national abortion ban, she said ‘enough of the gaslighting,’ and then she turns it and says, she makes it a proactive argument to this Democratic group: we’re going to prevent this from happening — he wants to take us back to the 1800s, this is 2024. So it gives that forward-looking, proactive, not just negative on Trump, but mobilize for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris around this. That’s the argument.”

On CNN’s News Central with Brianna Keilar: “Soon, Vice President Kamala Harris will be speaking in Arizona as the fight for access to abortion intensifies in that battleground state. On Tuesday, the State Supreme Court reinstated a near-total abortion ban that dates all the way back to the Civil War era. In remarks, Harris is expected to say that the ban is quote, ‘One of the biggest aftershocks yet following the United States Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade, and she’s expected to place blame squarely before former President Trump.”

HuffPost: Kamala Harris On Near-Total Arizona Abortion Ban: ‘Donald Trump Did This’

[Alanna Vagianos, 4/12/24]

Vice President Kamala Harris hosted a campaign event in Arizona on Friday following the state Supreme Court’s recent ruling that an 1864 near-total abortion ban can go into effect.

“Here in Arizona, they have turned the back the clock to the 1800s to take away a woman’s most fundamental right, the right to make decisions over her own body,” Harris told a crowd in Tucson. “The overturning of Roe was, without any question, a seismic event. And this ban here in Arizona is one of the biggest aftershocks yet.” […]

“We all must understand who is to blame. Former President Donald Trump did this,” Harris said. “Donald Trump is the architect of this health care crisis. And that is not a fact, by the way, that he hides. In fact, he brags about it.”

Vice President Harris visited a Tucson community center on Friday to campaign in support of abortion rights days after the state’s highest court cleared the way for a Civil War-era abortion ban to take effect.

“Donald Trump is the architect of this health-care crisis. And that’s not a fact he hides. In fact, he brags about it,” Harris said to a diverse, mostly female crowd that packed the center’s auditorium.

Harris slammed Trump over his record and rhetoric on abortion, calling him the “architect of this healthcare crisis,” as the court ruling brings the vital swing state to the forefront of abortion politics.

“President Donald Trump hand-picked three members of the United States Supreme Court because he intended for them to overturn Roe, and as he intended they did,” she said in Tucson. […]

“Joe Biden and I trust women to know what is in their own best interest,” the vice president said. “And women trust all of us, to fight to protect their most fundamental freedoms. Arizona Republic: Vice President Kamala Harris blames Trump for Arizona abortion ban ahead of Tucson visit

[Laura Gersony, 4/12/24]

Vice President Kamala Harris argued Friday that former President Donald Trump is to blame for the Arizona Supreme Court’s Tuesday decision to uphold a near-total ban on abortion, countering the former president’s recent efforts to distance himself from the decision.

“Donald Trump is the architect of this health care crisis. And that’s not a fact, by the way, that he hides. In fact, he brags about it,” Harris said to a crowd of about 100 supporters at El Rio Neighborhood Center in Tucson.

“Just minutes ago, (Trump) said … the collection of state bans is ‘working the way it’s supposed to,'” Harris said, referencing Trump’s remarks at his Mar-a-Lago estate.

The day before Tuesday’s decision, Trump reiterated his support for the U.S. Supreme Court’s rollback of Roe v. Wade […]

Harris has traveled across the country to rail against Republican-led attempts to restrict abortion. She appeared in Phoenix in early March to argue that Arizona’s laws “criminalize doctors” and “punish” women, calling the state’s anti-abortion advocates “extremists.” […]

Biden’s campaign released a statement along the same lines, calling Trump’s comment a “scramble” on a law “he enabled.”

The decision, which revived a 160-year-old law barring all abortions except in cases when “it is necessary to save” a pregnant woman’s life, “demonstrated once and for all that overturning Roe was just the opening act of a larger strategy” to restrict abortion access in the United States, Harris said. The ruling, she said, marked an “inflection point” in the fight over abortion rights.

“And we all must understand who all is to blame,” she said. “Former President Donald Trump did this.”

Ms. Harris went on to call abortion restrictions in states like Arizona “Trump’s abortion bans.” […]

“Here in Arizona, they have turned back the clock to the 1800s to take away a woman’s most fundamental right, the right to make decisions about her own body,” Harris said of the ruling.

She called Trump “the architect of this health care crisis.”

“Because of Donald Trump, more than 20 states in our nation have bans,” Harris said. “Now, because of Donald Trump, one in three women of reproductive age in our country live in a state that has a Trump abortion ban.”

She warned that a second Trump term would bring more bans.

“We all know if Donald Trump gets the chance, he will sign a national abortion ban, and how do we know? Just look at his record,” she said. “Just look at the facts. Y’all know I’m a former prosecutor.”

Axios: Harris on Trump’s abortion stance: “Enough with the gaslighting”

[Shauneen Miranda, 4/12/24]

Vice President Kamala Harris attacked former President Trump’s abortion record during a visit to Arizona Friday, calling him the “architect of this health care crisis” as she cast post-Roe America at risk of reverting to the 1800s.

Why it matters: The Biden campaign is eager to drive Democratic voter turnout in the key swing state after its Supreme Court’s decision this week to uphold a restrictive Civil War-era abortion ban, with exceptions only to save the mother’s life.

  • “This is 2024, not the 1800s. And we’re not going back,” Harris said during a fiery speech in Tucson, met with cheers from the audience.
  • The VP said Trump “wants us to believe he will not sign a national ban. Enough with the gaslighting.”
  • She detailed the wide-ranging effects of the loss of the federal constitutional right to abortion on women in the U.S., including on miscarriage care.

Zoom in: “We all must understand who is to blame — former President Donald Trump did this,” Harris said.

  • “Here’s what a second Trump term looks like: more bans, more suffering and less freedom,” added Harris, whose trip was planned prior to the Arizona ruling.

USA Today: ‘Biggest aftershocks yet.’ Kamala Harris blasts Trump over Arizona’s near-total abortion ban

[Joey Garrison, 4/13/24]

Vice President Kamala Harris blasted Donald Trump in a visit Friday to Arizona in the wake of the state Supreme Court reinstating an 1864 abortion ban, arguing the former president was responsible for what she said was a “full-on” attack on reproductive rights.

“We all must understand who is to blame. Former President Donald Trump did this,” Harris said Friday, speaking in Tucson, Arizona to room of about 100 supporters at a campaign event for President Joe Biden. “Donald Trump is the architect of this health care crisis.” […]

“The overturning of Roe was without any question a seismic event, and this ban here in Arizona is one of the biggest aftershocks yet,” Harris said, calling Arizona’s abortion ban “a new inflection point.”

“It has demonstrated, once and for all, that overturning Roe was just the opening act of a larger strategy to take women’s rights and freedoms, part of a full-on attack, state by state, on reproductive freedom.” […]

“As much harm as he has already caused, a second Trump term would be even worse,” Harris said, arguing that Trump is “gaslighting” when he says he doesn’t want a national abortion ban. “We all know if Donald Trump gets the chance, he will sign a national abortion ban. And how do we know? Just look at his record.”

“The overturning of Roe was, without any question, a seismic event and this ban here in Arizona is one of the biggest aftershocks yet,” she said. […]

The ban was made possible by Trump, Harris argued, who had said he is “proudly” responsible for the supreme court overturning Roe v Wade in 2022.

“Former president Donald Trump did this. During his campaign in 2016, Donald Trump said women should be punished for seeking an abortion,” she said.

Arizona’s ban is a new inflection point, Harris said. “It has demonstrated once and for all that overturning Roe was just the opening act of a larger strategy to take women’s rights and freedoms, part of a full-on attack, state by state, on reproductive freedom.” […]

“Arizona, this November up and down the ballot reproductive freedom is at stake, and you have the power to protect it with your vote,” Harris said.

The Hill: Harris in Arizona: Trump ‘gaslighting’ on abortion

[Alex Gangitano, 4/12/24]

“Enough with the gaslighting. We all know if Donald Trump gets the chance, he will sign a national abortion ban,” she told a crowd in Tucson.

“He basically wants to take America back to the 1800s,” Harris added. “But we are not going to let that happen. Because, here’s the deal, this is 2024 not the 1800s and we’re not going back. We are not going back.” […]

She placed the blame squarely on Trump, which President Biden’s reelection campaign has used as a strategy for months to warn about what a second term for the former president could mean for reproductive rights.

Politico: Harris hits Trump on abortion from Arizona

“We all must understand who is to blame. Former President Donald Trump did this,” Harris said at a campaign event in Tucson, Arizona. “During his campaign in 2016, Donald Trump said women should be punished for seeking an abortion.”

Harris’ campaign trip to Arizona comes just days after the state’s high court upheld a 160-year-old law outlawing abortions unless the patient’s life is in danger. Harris blamed Trump in a statement following the ruling, saying, “It’s a reality because of Donald Trump, who brags about being ‘proudly the person responsible’ for overturning Roe v. Wade.”

“Donald Trump is the architect of this health care crisis. And that’s not a fact he hides,” Harris told a friendly audience during her speech Friday at El Rio Center on Tucson’s west side.

“In fact, it’s something he brags about … and as much harm as he has already caused, a second Trump term would be even worse,” she said.

“If Donald Trump gets the chance, he will sign a national abortion ban. How do we know? Look at his record … here’s what a second Trump term looks like: more bans, more suffering, less freedom. We’re not going to let that happen.”

Tucson Sentinel: Vice President Harris tells Tucson crowd that Trump is to blame for Az abortion ban

[Jim Nintzel, 4/12/24]

Vice President Kamala Harris laid the blame for the Arizona Supreme Court’s decision to uphold an 1864 abortion ban squarely on former president and presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump during a visit to Tucson on Friday.

“Just this week here in Arizona, they have turned the clock back more than a century to take away a woman’s most fundamental right, the right to make decisions about her own body,” Harris said during a rally at El Rio Neighborhood Center.

“What has happened here in Arizona is a new inflection point. It has demonstrated once and for all that overturning Roe was just the opening act—just the opening act of a larger strategy to take women’s rights and freedoms, part of a full-on attack state by state on reproductive freedom. And we all must understand who is to blame. Former President Donald Trump did this,” she said. […]

“Donald Trump picked three members of the Supreme Court because he intended for them overturn Roe and as he intended, they did,” Harris said. And now, because of Donald Trump, more than 20 states in our nation have bans. Now, because of Donald Trump, one in three women of reproductive age in our country live in a state that has a Trump abortion ban.” […]

“Trump wants us to believe he will not sign a national ban,” the Democratic vice president said. “Enough with the gaslighting. We all know if Donald Trump gets the chance he will sign a national abortion ban. … Congress tried to pass a national abortion ban in 2017. And then-President Trump endorsed it and promised to sign it if he got on his desk.”

JUST NOW: Vice President Harris Responds to Trump Bragging He ‘Broke Roe’ and Extreme State Bans are ‘Working Very Brilliantly’

Vice President Harris: A second Trump term would mean “More bans, more suffering, and less freedom.”

Tonight in Tucson, Arizona, Vice President Harris responded directly to Donald Trump’s comments at Mar-a-Lago earlier today — bragging that he “broke Roe” and saying the extreme abortion bans that resulted are “working the way it is supposed to”:

“Donald Trump is the architect of this health care crisis. And that is not a fact by the way that he hides. In fact, he brags about it. Just this week he said that he is ‘proudly the person responsible’ for overturning Roe, ‘proudly responsible’ for the pain and suffering of millions of women and families, ‘proudly responsible’ that he took your freedoms.

“And just minutes ago, standing beside Speaker Johnson, Donald Trump just said the collection of state bans is quote, ‘working the way it is supposed to.’ And as much harm as he has already caused, a second Trump term would be even worse.”

[…]

“Here’s what a second Trump term looks like. More bans, more suffering, and less freedom. Just like he did in Arizona, he basically wants to take America back to the 1800s. But we are not going to let that happen. Because, here’s the deal: this is 2024, not the 1800s, and we’re not going back. We are not going back. Joe Biden and I trust women to know what is in their own best interest. And women trust all of us to fight to protect their most fundamental freedoms.”
