This one is an absolute no-brainer; if you care in the slightest bit about protecting the natural world or wildlife, about combating disastrous global climate chaos, etc., then the ONLY serious option at this point is to vote Democratic. In this case, that means supporting Sen. Tim Kaine’s reelection and opposing whichever ant-environmental extremist (Corey Stewart, Nick Freitas or EW Jackson) Virginia Republicans nominate on June 12. Go Kaine!

Sierra Club endorses Sen. Tim Kaine for re-election

Grassroots group praises Kaine’s bold environmental record and commitment to due process

RICHMOND, Virginia– The Sierra Club announced its endorsement of Sen. Tim Kaine for re-election to the United States Senate today.

Sen. Kaine has constantly fought to protect clean air and water safeguards from Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans’ attacks. He is currently working to oppose plans to drill for oil and gas off of Virginia’s coast and has introduced legislation to help stop the worst effects of sea-level rise from climate change in Hampton Roads.

“Sen. Kaine’s record of standing up to this administration’s reckless attacks on Virginia’s environment speaks volumes,” Corrina Beall, Legislative and Political Director for the Virginia Chapter of the Sierra Club, said. “The senator has proven time and again that he is a climate champion.”

The Sierra Club has previously endorsed Sen. Kaine for election to the Senate in 2012 and for Vice President in 2016.

“Tim Kaine is the only candidate in this race who will protect Virginians’ right to clean air and water,” Bob Shippee, Political Chair of the Virginia Chapter of the Sierra Club, said. “Tim Kaine has shown, throughout his career, from Richmond City Council to the U.S. Senate, a commitment to protect Virginia’s resources for future generations. His staunch support in the Senate has helped shield our environment from Donald Trump and Scott Pruitt’s attacks.”

Recently, the Senator has voiced his objections to how a rushed process by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission led to hasty approvals of the Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley pipelines and called for both projects to be reheard by the body.

“Senator Kaine is a great friend to the planet, with unyielding support for commonsense environmental safeguards like the Clean Power Plan and opposition to reckless plans for offshore drilling operations off Virginia’s coast,” Kate Addleson, Director of the Sierra Club Virginia Chapter, said. “He has been a fantastic steward to Virginia’s environment during his time in the Senate, and we look forward to his continued commitment to Virginia’s clean energy economy in his next term.”

In addition to the endorsement, the Sierra Club will lend its considerable volunteer strength to the senator’s campaign.

  • Three more great picks by the Sierra Club!

Sierra Club endorses Reps. Beyer, Connolly, McEachin and Scott for re-election

Grassroots group praises representatives’ environmental records

RICHMOND, Virginia– The Sierra Club announced its endorsements of Reps. Don Beyer (D-Alexandria), Gerry Connolly (D-Mantua), Donald McEachin (D-Henrico County) and Bobby Scott (D-Newport News) for re-election today.

All four congressmen have spent their time in congress as stewards of Virginians’ air and water. Beyer, Connolly, McEachin and Scott were all endorsed by the Sierra Club in 2016.

“Don Beyer is an unquestioned champion of the environment who has fully recognized that the harmful consequences of climate change are the existential crisis of our generation,” Pat Soriano, Political Chair of the Sierra Club Mount Vernon Group, said. “Notably, Beyer was among the first elected officials to call for EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt’s dismissal or resignation while continuing to challenge Pruitt for censoring science.”

Beyer represents Virginia’s 8th congressional district. Connolly, who represents Virginia’s 11th congressional district, has joined Beyer in efforts to fight Donald Trump’s proposal to eliminate Chesapeake Bay Restoration funding and support comprehensive legislation to restore the Bay.

“Gerry Connolly has a true commitment to Virginia’s clean energy economy,” Alex Rough, Political Chair of the Sierra Club Great Falls Group, said. “He has stood steadfast in support of landmark environmental legislation like the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Antiquities Act and the Clean Power Plan that have been under threat during the Trump administration.”

A freshman member, McEachin, who represents Virginia’s 4th congressional district, has worked tirelessly to protect Virginia communities from the harms of pollution.

“Donald McEachin spent years in Virginia politics and his time in Congress fighting for climate and environmental justice,” Frances Crutchfield, Political Chair of the Falls of the James Group, said. “McEachin has a dedication to reducing carbon pollution from power plants and fighting the effects that pollution has on Virginians’ health.”

Scott, who represents Virginia’s 3rd congressional district, shares in strong opposition to drilling off Virginia’s coast.

“Bobby Scott’s continued opposition to offshore drilling and commitment to fighting the worst effects of climate change demonstrates his obligation to environmental protection,” Marjorie Leach-Parker, Chair of the Sierra Club Virginia Chapter, said. “During his years in office, he has consistently stood up for the health and well being of Virginians both inside and outside of his district.”

In addition to the endorsement, the Sierra Club will lend its considerable volunteer strength to the representatives’ campaigns.
