So, after a Fourth of July in which Democratic candidates for Congress here in Virginia were EAGER and PROUD to campaign with Sen. Tim Kaine, we get the following interview with Rep. Scott Taylor (R-VA02), in which Taylor basically disowns Virginia GOP U.S. Senate nominee neo-Confederate Corey Stewart. Asked whether he supports/will campaign with the guy at the top of the Virginia Republican ticket this year, Taylor says “we’ll see,” “he’s not called me yet,” “there’s no way in hell you’re going to be able to put forth a winning campaign without a different message,” “who knows,” “we run our own race,” Corey has “zero shot” of winning the general election, etc.
OK, let’s get real here: can you even IMAGINE a Virginia Democrat taking like this about Tim Kaine, who we all respect tremendously? Of course not! Yet on the Republican side, just in the past few days, we had Rep. Barbara Comstock blowing off a GOP unity event in Fairfax, and now Rep. Scott Taylor dissing/distancing himself from Corey Stewart. Oh, and of course the Virginia GOP saw its Chairman, John Whitbeck, announce that he’s resigning (almost certainly because, in part, of Corey Stewart). In short, Democrats are united and energized for November, while it’s a hot mess over on the Republican side.
So what should Democrats do about all this? The answer is obvious: let’s take advantage of this situation and shoot for a landslide win this November for Tim Kaine, which will not just send a resounding message of rejection to Corey Stewart’s disgusting views and style of politics, but also help Jennifer Wexton, Elaine Luria, Abigail Spanberger and other “down-ballot” Democratic candidates as well! Sound like a plan?
