Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Tuesday, May 12.
- Covid-19 could reverse decades of global progress (“The pandemic’s collateral damage, briefly explained”)
- Europe fears coronavirus second wave (“Planning for a another wave is hampered by how little we still know about the coronavirus, experts say.”)
- Sweden Revises Covid Strategy After Deaths of Elderly Spiral
- Putin Is Well on His Way to Stealing the Next Election (“RIP democracy”)
- WHO sees ‘potentially positive data’ on COVID-19 treatments
- While a pandemic rages, political journalists are still grading Trump on a curve
- First Thing: Is the US holding up the search for a coronavirus vaccine? (“The White House has turned its back on the global coalition. Plus, what Trump can learn about the power of a heartfelt team talk”)
- Fauci Plans to Use Hearing to Warn of ‘Needless Suffering and Death’ (“Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, is scheduled to testify on Tuesday before the Senate Health Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.”)
- 2,000 former DOJ officials demand Barr resign for ‘repeated assaults on the rule of law’
- US fossil fuel giants set for a coronavirus bailout bonanza (“Exclusive: oil, coal and fracking companies in line to benefit from $750bn bond scheme” Absolutely unacceptable. They should get ZERO.)
- Supreme Court to hear clash over Trump tax, bank records (This *should* be a no-brainer, but unfortunately we’ve got the likes of “I LIKE BEER DO YOU LIKE BEER?” on the Supreme Court. Ugh.)
- The Supreme Court must enforce the subpoena of Trump’s financial records
- DOJ Alumni Statement on Flynn Case (“Attorney General Barr has once again assaulted the rule of law, this time in the case of President Trump’s former national security adviser Michael Flynn…Make no mistake: The Department’s action is extraordinarily rare, if not unprecedented. If any of us, or anyone reading this statement who is not a friend of the President, were to lie to federal investigators in the course of a properly predicated counterintelligence investigation, and admit we did so under oath, we would be prosecuted for it…Our democracy depends on a Department of Justice that acts as an independent arbiter of equal justice, not as an arm of the president’s political apparatus.”)
- The Flynn case isn’t over until the judge says it’s over
- The patchwork of state reopenings is a deadly game of trial and error
- How to Create a Pandemic Depression (“Opening the economy too soon can backfire, badly.”)

- Starve a Fever(“Why do Senate Republicans think they’ve already spent enough money on the pandemic?”)
- Trump is getting trounced among a crucial constituency: The haters (“In 2016, Donald Trump cleaned up among voters who disliked him and Hillary Clinton. This year, Biden is winning big among the comparable group.”)

- Pelosi urges Congress to ‘go big’ on next virus aid package
- Trump abruptly ends briefing after contentious exchanges (I’m including this, from the AP, to show exactly how NOT to write a headline. “Contentious?” Can they try any harder to sanitize what actually happened, including Trump’s misogyny and racism? AP sucks, as does most of the corporate media.)
- Trump spars with Asian American reporter over ‘nasty question’ (“CBS News journalist Weijia Jiang asked Mr Trump why testing is a global competition to him. The president answered by saying that’s a question she should ask China. After calling on another reporter, Ms Jiang followed up by asking the president why that response was specifically for her. President Trump has previously made comments regarding Ms Jiang’s Asian American background.” This is from the BBC, by the way…*not* a U.S. news outlet. Hmmmm…wonder why that is.)
- ‘Don’t ask me. Ask China’: Trump clashes with reporters then abruptly leaves press briefing (“President lashes out at Asian American journalist who queried his constant emphasis on being first in testing” The Guardian does MUCH better than AP in its headline about this.)
- Senate Republicans break with Trump over ‘Obamagate’
- It took one question for a reporter to expose Trump’s latest baseless Obama conspiracy theory (“Monday’s news conference ended with Trump melting down in response to questions from female reporters.”)
