From VPAP, we learn that “[h]alfway through a month-long application process, 88 people have offered their services as one of eight citizen members of Virginia’s new Redistricting Commission.” Of those 88, check out the breakouts:

  • 71 men/17 women
  • 67 white/13 Black/4 Other/3 Multi-race/1 American Indian or Alaska Native; 2 Hispanics
  • Only 19 under age 50, with 22 ages 61-70 and 21 ages 71-80.
  • 49 earning >$101k, 21 earning $75k-$100k, only 6 under $50k and 12 earning $50k-$75k
  • 32 Democrats, 31 “None,” 19 Republicans, 6 “Other”
  • ZERO from Southwestern Virginia (!); 31 from Northern Virginia, 21 from Hampton Roads, etc.

In sum, so far at least, this commission is NOT looking like a cross-section of Virginia. Not even close. UGH.
