Last week, I posted about the presentations and impromptu Henrico Democrats candidate forum, featuring three of the Democratic candidates (Del. Dawn Adams, Del. Lamont Bagby, Alexsis Rodgers) running for the deep-blue SD09 (under pre-redistricting lines) seat that’s going to be vacated by State Senator Jennifer McClellan now that she has overwhelmingly won the special election for Congress (VA04). Also, now that the VA04 special election is over, we should expect press releases from these candidates – and any others who throw their hats in the ring – for this seat. Today, we begin with Del. Lamont Bagby’s announcement, in which he says he’s “committed to bridging divides to unleash all the potential Virginia’s future holds.”

By the way, note that these candidates will quite likely need to run again for the June primary under the newly drawn district lines, so whoever wins this special election might or might not be in the seat for very long.

RELEASE: Del. Lamont Bagby Announces State Senate Run

“Our communities are at a crossroads, in need of a leader committed to bridging divides to unleash all the potential Virginia’s future holds — I am proud to announce my State Senate campaign to be that leader for the place I have always called home.”

RICHMOND, VA — Today, after serving his community as an elected official for the past fifteen years, including eight years on the Henrico County School Board and seven years in the House of Delegates, Del. Lamont Bagby announced his run for State Senate.

Our communities are at a crossroads, in need of a leader committed to bridging divides to unleash all the potential Virginia’s future holds — I am proud to announce my State Senate campaign to be that leader for the place I have always called home. As a member of the House and Chair of the VLBC, I have prided myself on building a reputation as a leader that can bridge partisan and policy divides to deliver substantive progress. While the impact of all that we have achieved is undeniable, there’s undoubtedly more work to be done. I remain committed to the important work of growing the Commonwealth and bettering the lives of every Virginian in it and am eager to serve the community that made me the man I am today in the State Senate.”

As a Black man growing up in the very community he now has the privilege to serve, Lamont knows all that can be achieved here, but he has also seen firsthand the urgent need for support. After returning to his alma mater, Henrico High School, as a teacher, administrator, school board member, and mentor, Lamont continued his efforts to support Virginia’s youth on the leadership team at the Peter Paul Development Center. There, Lamont worked to help ensure resources are available to all residents — including career development programs, vital skills training, homework help, and more vital tools to empower students and their families.

As a member of the House and Chair of the VLBC, Lamont has worked across the aisle to deliver for Virginia families including championing and ushering through legislation focused on stopping the school-to-prison pipeline, ensuring affordable housing, criminal justice reforms, voting rights, and consumer protection.
