Vice-Chair of Norfolk Planning Commission Launches Historic Bid for District 92 Delegate
Breaking Historic Ceilings is a Part of the Campaign
NORFOLK, VA- This past Sunday, January 29th, nearly 100 community elders, leaders, officials and voters gathered at the Southside Boys & Girls Club for the official campaign kick-off of Kim Sudderth, the current Vice-Chair of the Norfolk Planning Commission. Ms. Sudderth is running for the Virginia General Assembly’s House of Delegates in the new, redrawn District 92. Kim Sudderth is the first ever black female Vice-Chair of the Planning Commission, just one of the historic ceilings she hopes to continue to break.
The day was filled with music, networking, homage to ancestors and elders, and culture. But it also included deeper conversations and perspectives. As Anne Boone, elder of the Berkley neighborhood stated, “Despite over 100 years of history, Kim Sudderth would be the third EVER resident of Berkley to represent Norfolk in the General Assembly. The last being Mayor Alexander. And she would be the first female from Berkley to represent Norfolk. A historic win.”
Ms. Sudderth was direct and detailed in discussing her research, work, plans and policies to address affordable housing, economic equity, healthcare and environmental justice. She was so impassioned that two sitting Norfolk City Council Members that were in attendance offered their support on the spot- despite an ongoing primary.
Ms. Sudderth closed the event stating that “I chose this community, not once but twice; the people of the 92nd are who I will protect, elevate and carry in my heart. I will put the people in our community first. And as a proven community champion, I will do the work that needs to be done for our community as our House Delegate.”
