Patrick Hope Launches 50-Day Tour Across the 8th District

0
Today, Patrick Hope is announcing the launch of his "Every Neighborhood Matters" tour where he will personally visit every precinct in the 8th Congressional District before the primary election on June 10th.

Including election day, there are 50 days left in the campaign. The 8th district has 159 precincts.

Patrick will announce the tour tonight at the Fairfax County Democratic Committee April meeting.

"The 8th district ranges from neighborhoods starting as far north as McLean through Arlington, Falls Church, Alexandria, Mt. Vernon, Franconia, Springfield, Annandale, Lorton and all the way to the Prince William County line," Hope said in announcing his tour. "Each neighborhood in the 8th district has important issues that voters want to see their next Congressman address, and I intend to visit with voters in every precinct to listen and learn. As a State Delegate I have made it a priority to be in every neighborhood in my district, and the voters of the 8th district deserve a candidate willing to demonstrate the same level of commitment."

Hope Campaign First to 1,000 Individual Donors

Today, Patrick Hope announced his campaign for Congress had reached 1,000 individual donations. "Our campaign is creating excitement among progressives both in the 8th district and across the nation," Hope noted after reaching this milestone. "We have made this election a referendum on standing up for the voiceless- the sick, the disabled, the young and the elderly. I'm so thankful that so many have responded and helped fund the voter contact efforts we will need to win on June 10th."

The campaign reported just over 650 individual donations at the end of the 1st quarter (March 31st).

Patrick Hope calls for changes in Fairfax voting

Calls for more early voting locations; Fairfax only doing early voting at Fairfax County Government Center in 11th District

With early absentee voting scheduled to begin next week, Patrick Hope (D-Arlington) issued the following statement about early in-person voting locations.

"The 8th district has four localities- Arlington and Fairfax counties as well as the cities of Falls Church and Alexandria. Three of those four localities are compact geographically- and are entirely in the 8th district. In those localities- Arlington, Falls Church and Alexandria- there is one early vote center at the electoral board office, which makes sense for these more compact localities.

Fairfax County is a different situation. The only opportunity to vote in person in Fairfax is also at the electoral board office, however, it is located in western Fairfax County near the border of the 10th and 11th Congressional districts. For many 8th district residents in Mt. Vernon, it is more than a 20 mile drive to the government center.  Roundtrip, many 8th district residents in Fairfax will likely have to spend more than an hour in the car in order to vote absentee in person.

This is unacceptable.  I understand that Fairfax has not traditionally had early vote locations other than the main government center for primaries. However, while that may have worked well for an 11th district primary, or a 10th district primary, it does not serve the residents of the 8th district. I call on the Fairfax County electoral board to reconsider their decision, and to open early vote locations in the 8th district for this primary. The 8th district includes precincts furthest from the government center- and I would like to see at least one early vote location in south county for Lee and Mt. Vernon districts, and at least one in northeastern Fairfax for our precincts in the Dranesville, Providence and Mason districts."

Patrick Hope Thanks Beyer, but Calls for Release to Come Sooner, Date Back Five...

Gov. Howard Dean, campaigning for Beyer, agrees releasing tax returns important for candidates running for federal office

At a press conference on Monday, Patrick Hope made five years of tax returns available to members of the media. "Transparency is something that is very important in politics," Hope said at the time. Hope also called on all nine of his opponents to release their returns.

On Tuesday, businessman and candidate Donald S. Beyer, Jr. announced that he would make one year's worth of returns available to the media on May 15.

"While I thank Don for responding to my call for transparency, I hope he is able to make these returns available sooner and dating back for five years instead of one," said Hope. "The people we seek to represent deserve to know everything about us, which is why I chose to release my returns now instead of waiting until we are less than one month out from the election."

Today, former Governor Howard Dean (D-VT) will join Beyer for an event in Arlington. Dean has been an outspoken advocate for releasing tax returns in the past, and did so in his own 2004 presidential campaign. Dean has made the following remarks about other candidates not releasing returns in the past:

"Not giving out the tax returns is a huge mistake." (8/16/12) CBS News

"What is [candidate] trying to hide?... the American people have a right to know about the well documented links between his political career and [candidate]'s business ventures." (8/21/08) Statement via Huffington Post

"As long as [candidate]'s got his tax returns hidden, it's going to be fatal... by not seeming trustworthy." (7/31/12) NBC Politics

Petition Launched For 8th District Residents To Support Efforts

Today Patrick Hope signed onto a national effort sponsored by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee in support of the Congressional Progressive Caucus budget.  The proposed budget would raise tax rates on those making over $250,000 per year and create new brackets for those making over $1,000,000 a year.

Patrick Hope Secures Endorsement from Arab American Democratic Caucus of Virginia

0
On Thursday, the Arab American Democratic Caucus of Virginia voted to endorse Patrick Hope for Congress after careful consideration of all candidates running in Virginia's 8th District.

In their endorsement, the Arab American Democratic Caucus of Virginia said their support was partly based off of Hope's record of "distinction... with much care for the underprivileged and the poor." The Caucus also identified Hope's steadfast support for "the human and civil rights of all Virginians" and his willingness to stand up to "bigotry and narrow-mindedness."

"I welcome the Arab American Democratic Caucus of Virginia to my campaign," Hope said. "The caucus had clearly done a lot of research into all of the candidates and asked tough questions. I appreciated the opportunity to share my views with them- but also to listen and to learn. I am so gratified that the caucus decided to join our campaign and I look forward to working together for many years to come."

The Arab American Democratic Caucus of Virginia is a non-sectarian Democratic organization representing the communal interests, civil rights and human rights of the Arab American community of Virginia.

HOPE LAUNCHES YOUNG PROFESSIONALS ADVISORY COMMITTEE

0
Arlington, VA - On Saturday, Patrick Hope held the first meeting of his Young Professionals Advisory Committee. Twenty young voters from across the 8th district met with Patrick to discuss issues important to them surrounding employment opportunities for young people and recent graduates.

"The 8th district is full of young professionals whose voices need to be heard," Hope said after the meeting. "We discussed issues such as underemployment, student loan debt and mass transit. I believe that the next Congressman from the 8th district needs to listen carefully to young professionals- they are the future of our community."

At the recent Arlington Young Democrats straw poll, Hope received 57% of the vote- with the other eleven 8th district candidates combining to get the other 43%. Conor Marshall, Chair of the Young Professionals Advisory Committee, said after the meeting, "This type of community engagement is exactly what voters in the 8th district have been waiting for. Patrick Hope continues to demonstrate that he values our input and will listen to us once elected to Congress."
