Ashburn, VA – Dominic Gabello, Campaign Manager for the Shawn Mitchell for State Senate campaign released the following statement in response to career politician Dick Black’s frivolous lawsuit on Health Care Reform.
“The same Dick Black who opposed criminalizing certain kinds of Rape, tried to make it illegal for adult women to obtain birth control, and who Republican leaders have called an embarrassment, isn’t even waiting until he gets elected to waste taxpayer money on his personal agenda. Black has backed millions in cuts to schools, but wants to spend money on lawyers to advance a frivolous lawsuit. Just imagine what he’ll do if he’s elected. Jobs should be Richmond’s first priority, not Dick Black’s extreme agenda.”

Career Politician Continues to Hide Extreme Views from Voters
Ashburn, VA - We're now into the 6th day of the disappearing act of career politician Dick Black who is hiding his extreme views from voters in Loudoun and Prince William counties. In response, the Mitchell campaign released a video, "What is Dick Black Hiding," asking voters in the 13th District to call Dick Black and tell him to release his VCDL survey.
You can view the video here:
"If Dick Black was proud enough to tout the endorsement of the extreme Virginia Citizens Defense League during his primary," said Mitchell Campaign Manager Dominic Gabello, "Why is he hiding his answers to their survey now? The voters should call Dick Black and ask him to release his survey and if he believes in the extreme positions of the VCDL and having guns in bars, schools, libraries and gutting the Virginia State Police Background check.
"It's time for Dick Black to release his survey."

VCDL Supports Guns in Schools, Bars and Libraries and wants to gut Virginia’s background check system
Ashburn, VA – Last night in a joint forum in the Heritage Hunt community of Prince William County, small businessman Shawn Mitchell challenged career politician Dick Black to release his answers to the extreme Virginia Citizens Defense League survey on guns. Delegate Dick Black received the VCDL endorsement earlier this year.
The VCDL is far to the right of the National Rifle Association and is well known for their opposition to all gun laws including restriction on guns in schools and colleges. They want to eliminate the background check system run by the Virginia State Police and allow people to carry concealed weapons without the current permit requirement that includes a background check and modest training requirement. VCDL members are infamous for carrying guns into the state capitol in Richmond during their lobby day and are completely out of step with the tradition of responsible gun ownership shared by most voters in the Old Dominion.
Dick Black should immediately release his VCDL survey so that the citizens of the 13th Senate District will know where he stands on these important public safety issues.
“There are 18 days left in this election, and voters deserve to know where career politician Dick Black stands on the extreme views of his supporters, the Virginia Citizens Defense League,” said Mitchell Campaign Manager Dominic Gabello. “Whether its guns in bars, schools, libraries or recreation centers, or gutting Virginia’s background check system, voters deserve to know where Dick Black really stands on this important public safety issue. He needs to release his questionnaire immediately.”
Voters can read the blank VCDL survey and see how extreme their views are. You can find a copy of the survey at: https://bluevirginia.us/wp-content/uploads/upload/VCDL%20VA%20Candidate%20Survey.pdf

Mitchell Offers Real Solutions While Career Politician Black Covers Up His Record
Ashburn, VA – Twice recently, small business owner Shawn Mitchell squared off against career politician Delegate Dick Black in a discussion about the future direction of the 13thDistrict. It is clear that Mitchell is the only candidate who will go to Richmond with real solutions to jump-start the economy and get Virginia moving forward again.
“Dick Black spends more time running away from his record than he does offering a vision for a better future,” said Mitchell Campaign Manager Dominic Gabello. “Whether it was voting against teacher pay raises or against more seats in Virginia colleges and universities for Virginia kids, Dick Black is too extreme for Loudoun and Prince William families.
“Black's empty campaign rhetoric on issues like transportation continue to explain why he was one of the most ineffective members of the General Assembly when voters fired him in 2005. Loudoun and Prince William families need real solutions for our transportation crisis, not pay in the sky schemes that will only pay off if Virginia posts a budget surplus.”
A comparison between the two candidates on the issues of most importance to voters:
Mitchell: Mitchell will work to attract high-growth, high-energy jobs. Mitchell also knows that one of the biggest problems small businesses face is their access to capital, so he proposes creating a reserve fund that will back bank loans to small businesses. Additionally, Mitchell supports worker training programs that will help unemployed workers get new skills and help them get back to work.
Black: Only talks about reducing regulations on business but offers no plans on creating jobs or how to attract new businesses to Virginia.
Mitchell: Mitchell supports bringing the Northern Virginia Delegation together to support a comprehensive, long-term plan to address our transportation nightmare. That plan should place an emphasis on projects that relieve the most congestion first.
Black: Offers no comprehensive solution to our traffic crisis. Only “solution” is IF there is a budget surplus.
Mitchell: Says we need to stop cutting K-12 and Higher Education funding, which is raising the costs on families and putting kids in trailers. Supports raising teacher pay to at least the national average so we are attracting and retaining the best teachers for our kids.
Black: In 2004, Black voted against an additional $250 million in higher education funding in the bi-partisan Warner budget. In 2005, Black voted against a bill that would guarantee more seats for Virginia students at state Colleges and Universities. Additionally, in the Committee of 100 debate, Black said he never voted against a teacher pay raise, but in 2001 voted against a 6% pay raise for teachers.

Career Politician Once Called ‘Embarrassment to Us All’ Tries to Cover Up His Record on the Issues
Ashburn, VA – Career politician and former Delegate Dick Black is trying to cover up his real record on the issues from the voters. Unfortunately for him, voters remember him as an ineffective, social crusader who was called an “embarrassment to us all” in 2005 by the former Chief of Staff to the Republican leader of the House of Delegates.
As a Delegate, Black opposed birth control, and he went so far as to try and make it legal for pharmacies to refuse to sell birth control to adult women. He also opposes abortion in all cases, including when a woman is raped, is a victim of incest or when her life is in imminent danger.
Black’s record is so extreme, he sent plastic fetuses to members of the General Assembly and even called birth control pills ‘baby pesticides’ in 2004. “Delegate Black’s cover up on his extreme record about women’s reproductive health is just another sign he is too out of the mainstream for Loudoun and Prince William families,” said Mitchell campaign manager Dominic Gabello. “There are too many families in Loudoun and Prince William counties that are worried about losing their jobs, are stuck in traffic and wondering why their kids are squeezed into trailers.
“If we want to know what Delegate Black will be like in Richmond again, we only need to look at his previous history for a glimpse of the future. Delegate Black really wants people to think he cares about the economy, but in reality his goal when he was a Delegate was to ‘end abortion.’ Voters aren’t interested in electing someone to a higher position whose goal is to promote divisive social issues, or that cut a quarter of a billion dollars from colleges and universities. They want someone who is going to create jobs, fix our transportation crisis and protect public school funding.”

In a October 20, 2005 Letter to the Editor in the Washington Post, Dick Black was called “An Embarrassment to us all” by John Feegel, a former Chief of Staff to the Republican Leader in the Virginia House of Delegates.

Senators Highlight Stark Differences Between Candidates in Fight for 13th District
Ashburn, VA – Today, Shawn Mitchell, combat veteran and candidate for the newly-created 13th State Senate district, earned the endorsements of the Chair of the Virginia Senate Democratic Caucus Mary Margaret Whipple and Senator Louise Lucas at Mitchell’s small business in Ashburn.
In his remarks today, Mitchell highlighted the hardships Virginians are facing. “Our district, and indeed this state, faces many difficult challenges right now, and the next General Assembly will be confronted with the task of finding practical and innovative solutions to address these pressing concerns.” Mitchell continued, “As a life-long Virginian, I’m proud to call this state my home, but like the small business owners, teachers and nurses I talk to each and every day, I’m worried about having a leader who will tackle these challenges head-on.”
“I started my business in the middle of one of the worst economies we’ve ever seen. I understand how to build a successful organization, create jobs locally and look at the good, bad and ugly of a profit and loss statement to make important decisions for my business. We need that type of business mentality in the State Senate as we look at more budget deficits in our immediate future.”
In endorsing Shawn Mitchell, Senator Mary Margaret Whipple remarked about Mitchell’s strong credentials to become a State Senator. “I have no doubt that [Shawn’s] strong business background, decorated military service and fresh perspective will be an asset to this new district.”
Senators Whipple and Lucas rejected the notion that Dick Black should get another chance in Richmond. “Let’s be clear!” Whipple said, “No one wants Dick Black back in Richmond.”
“Voters in this election have a clear choice: to elect a mature business owner who is invested in his community or a carpet bagging politician who believes in one thing: causing trouble,” she added.
Senator Louise Lucas added. “When Dick Black was in the House of Delegates, women were under attack by his extreme policies. And with him in the State Senate, we will be under attack again. Frankly, his complete disregard for women’s rights is a slap in the face to those of us standing here today.”
“This man will say everything and do anything to get elected. We all know he’ll just continue to put divisive social and cultural issues ahead creating jobs and jump starting our economy. That’s why we need Shawn Mitchell in the State Senate.” ###

“When I am in the State Senate, I will support policies that jumpstart our economy, like providing incentives to businesses that are creating and maintaining jobs locally. Additionally, by implementing practical solutions like increased telecommuting and synchronized light timing, we can get cars off the road and get us out of the transportation crisis that hinders our every day lives. In the Washington Post, Anita Kumar writes:
“Dick Black, running in Loudoun and Prince William counties, was criticized by leaders of his own party in 2003, when as a delegate he sent fellow lawmakers pink plastic models of fetuses as they prepared to vote on an abortion bill.”
In the Richmond Times Dispatch, Columnist Jeff Shapiro writes:
“In Northern Virginia, specifically, the outer Beltway suburbs of Loudoun and Prince William counties, the GOP nominee is Dick Black, a former delegate best known for bashing gays, thundering about pornography and handing out life-size plastic likenesses of fetuses as testimony to his opposition to abortion.”
We don’t need that in the General Assembly again.
