Dominion Virginia Power would like you to pay for another power plant that Virginia doesn’t need

0

Cross-posted from that paragon of journalism and reporting Richmond Progressive Examiner.

Dominion Virginia Power would like to build another power plant in Brunswick County that will allegedly save Virginians money over its “expected life” while reducing the quality of living over the course of the “expected lives” of several generations who have been forced to live with more dirty fossil fuel sources of energy (this last half is my own assessment!).

In its unshaking thoughtfulness for its ‘customers’, Dominion Virginia Power has proposed building a $1.3 billion, 1,358-megawatt, gas-fired power plant close to a town called Lawrenceville in Brunswick County, Virginia. In making a case for its construction, Dominion is arguing that the new gas-fired power plant will save customers almost $1 billion over the projected life of the power plant relative to the “next best alternative.”

The alleged demand for more generating capacity would be met with this new plant, according to Dominion. But an State Corporation Commission (SCC) Hearing Examiner, A. Ann Berkebile, didn’t agree with Dominion’s assessment, and coming from anyone inside a historically Dominion-friendly agency like the SCC, the Hearing Examiner’s conclusion was all the more powerful.

“The company’s decision not to affirmatively explore actual, third-party alternatives to the Brunswick Plant – sufficient to meet its expected capacity deficiency – calls into question the necessity and prudence of the Brunswick Plant,” explained A. Ann Berkebile.

According to the Richmond Times Dispatch, Berkebile suggested that the SCC reject Dominions’application for a new plant  “without prejudice” and direct the company to refile its application if Dominion Virginia Power evaluates “actual third-party market alternatives” and finds that the Brunswick plant is the best option for ratepayers. That would mean Dominion would have to actually try to look at other options beyond building more power plants inside of the commonwealth.

While that portion of the SCC’s ruling was a victory for Virginians unwilling to see an unnecessary power plant built in our state, the Virginia chapter of the Sierra Club was critical of another segment of the SCC’s ruling.

According to the Virginia director of the Sierra Club, Glen Besa, “The hearing examiner still accepted Dominion’s inflated electricity demand projections and rejects energy efficiency as a means of reducing the need for a new gas plant. Unfortunately, the SCC still holds efficiency to a higher standard than investments in polluting fossil fuels.” In other words, the SCC has sipped the kool-aid mixed by companies like Dominion Virginia Power that overwhelmingly looks for short-term profits over long-term economic, environmental, and human-health gains.

I’m glad that Virginia has agencies looking out for our future (my tongue is squarely in my cheek).

Target Virginia pols taking Koch pledge to block climate action

2

A: How do you stop the U.S. from taking action on a global threat whose existence has been documented through the peer-reviewed, published research of 97% of the scientists who’ve studied it?

B: Label all attempts at dealing with this issue a “tax” and get soulless politicians to pledge to oppose any action.

Such has been the strategy of the Koch Brothers in directing their wholly-owned subsidiary, the Republican party. Their “No Climate Tax” pledge has attracted the signatures of 411 political hacks, only 3 of whom were Democrats — and every one of whom needs to be politically targeted with the goal of ending their political careers, for the sake of a healthy future for our kids.

You can see the list of signatories here. I’ve listed Virginia signers below, to put all our allies on notice of the need to work hard to send these losers into involuntary retirement.

A few points:

– Note the presence of Republicans like Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling and Rep. Scott Rigell, who have sometimes been alleged to be “moderates” — but clearly not when the money and support of the Koch brothers and Fossil Fuel Lobby are at stake.

– This list underscores the importance of finding strong Democrats to run against potentially vulnerable Republicans on this list, like Sen. Jill Holtzman Vogel.

– Interesting that a coastal community like Virginia Beach would actually have a City Councilwoman (Rosemary Wilson) willing to let it bear the ravages of sea level rise and more violent and frequent storms.

And here is the Commonwealth’s Climate Rogue’s Gallery:

US House

Scott Rigell – U.S. Representative – 2nd District

Robert Hurt – U.S. Representative – 5th District

Eric Cantor – U.S. Representative – 7th District – Majority Leader

Morgan Griffith – U.S. Representative – 9th District

State Officials

Bill Bolling – Lieutenant Governor

Ken Cuccinelli II – Gubernatorial Candidate

State Senate

Steve Martin- State Senator – 11th District

Frank M. Ruff Jr.- State Senator – 15th District

Jill H. Vogel- State Senator – 27th District

State House

Lacey Putney – State Delegate – 19th District

Tommy Wright – State Delegate – 61st District

M. Kirkland Cox – State Delegate – 66th District – Majority Whip

Brenda Pogge – State Delegate – 96th District

Local

Rosemary Wilson – City Councilwoman, Virginia Beach

Evict them all!

Virginia News Headlines: Sunday Morning

5

Here are a few Virginia (and national) news headlines, political and otherwise, for Sunday, July 7. As for the fascinating video by Eric Byler and Annabel Park, all I can say is, look south to North Carolina to see the disaster/travesty which will unfold in Virginia if we elect Ken Kookinelli governor. Don’t do it!

*Egyptian factions clash over appointment of ElBaradei

*More Deaths Expected in Canada Oil Train Explosion

*Two dead, dozens hurt as flight crashes at S.F. airport (Question: why is this story more “news” than the Canadian oil train disaster, or how about this story? How does the media decide what’s a “news story?”)

*Immigration reform in the real world (“…too many seem to cling to a view that demands an outcome – mass deportation – that nearly everyone recognizes is unrealistic. Others, including Virginia’s Rep. Bob Goodlatte, the Republican chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, have insisted that no solution include a pathway to American citizenship for an estimated 11 million immigrants here illegally.”)

*Spokesman denies rumor Gov. McDonnell is resigning (“Larry Sabato, director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia, also took to Twitter early Sunday morning in response to rumors the swirled there, writing: ‘Gov. Bob McDonnell is NOT resigning. I have checked. That is official. Irresponsible rumors are wrong.'”)

*Judge to rule Monday on Executive Mansion chef charges

*Virginia’s salary for governor tied for fifth among states (In other words, corrupt slimeball Bob McDonnell could have afforded to pay for his daughter’s wedding AND a new Rolex if he really wanted one. Get this guy outta here!)

*McDonnell Owes Fellow Virginians Some Answers (He owed us those answers many weeks ago. His silence has been deafening!)

*Helen Dragas points to positive outcomes of U-Va. leadership crisis (Um, ok.)

*Q&A with Helen Dragas, former rector of the University of Virginia governing board (“Helen Dragas of the University of Virginia Board of Visitors sat down for an interview with The Washington Post in late June as she prepared to make the transition from leading the board to being a regular member.”)

*Schapiro: What if McDonnell were out of his job – now? (“McDonnell has enough to worry about without having to brood, Nixon-like, over the constitutional conditions under which he keeps his job or might briefly give it up – or is stripped of it. It may be a comfort to McDonnell that Democrats are silent on Petersen’s blustery challenge to the governor. Besides, McDonnell faces a bigger challenge: convincing fellow Republicans to keep their mouths’ shut.”)

*Cuccinelli targeting Southwest Virginia and making false plans

*Advocates worry about details of Virginia’s new program to restore voting rights to felons

*U.Va.’s first black rector no stranger to trailblazing (Congratulations!)

*ABC draws rare scrutiny as questions in UVa student case linger (Such a fiasco and an outrage…)

*New apartments coming downtown (“Buildings that once languished, vacant and forsaken, in downtown Norfolk should soon see new life as apartments.”)

*Expect a storm  of questions (“Roanoke property owners will need to understand why they are required to pay to help keep toxins and debris from being washed into Roanoke River.”)

*Bryce Harper elected to become youngest National League all-star starter; Zimmermann also voted in

*Nationals vs. Padres: Harper helps Washington to 5-4 win, its third in a row

The Truth About Who Ken Cuccinelli Puts First

3

From the Democratic Party of Virginia:

Once again, Ken Cuccinelli’s actions speak volumes louder than his words.  Despite his misguided rhetoric, the truth is that Cuccinelli has a well documented history of putting the financial interests of out-of-state energy companies that have donated to his political campaign ahead of the needs of Southwest Virginia landowners and families.

Virginia landowners sued EQT Production and CNX Gas Company for drilling for coal bed methane in seams underneath their land and failing to pay as much as $30 million in royalties. Rather than standing up for the people of the Commonwealth on this critical issue, Cuccinelli and his office have been advising the companies in their efforts to avoid paying Virginians millions in royalties. As the AP reported, a federal magistrate judge commented she was “shocked” by emails where the Office of the Attorney General offers pointers to the out-of-state companies to help them win their case AGAINST Virginians.

And just today we’ve learned that a second of these out-of-state corporations has filed a motion defending Cuccinelli’s actions on its behalf. Cuccinelli’s use of Virginians’ hard earned tax dollars to tip the scale against them and in favor of these out-of-state corporations is despicable at best, and Virginians’ deserve better from those who seek to represent them in our government.

Background:

Federal Judge “Expressed Shock” at Cuccinelli’s Office’s Involvement in Aiding Out Of State Gas Companies in Case Against Landowners

In June 2013, the AP reported, “A federal judge has expressed shock that an assistant Virginia attorney general has been assisting two natural gas companies that are being sued by landowners who allege the companies bilked them out of natural gas royalties. U.S. Magistrate Judge Pamela Meade Sargent said in a filed court opinion that the relationship was revealed in emails provided to the court by the plaintiffs in the case against EQT Production Co. and CNX Gas Co., two Pittsburgh-area energy companies.” [AP, 6/6/13]

Editorial: Cuccinelli’s Explanation “Hard to Swallow,” CNX Has Given More than $100,000 to Cuccinelli’s Campaign

In June 2013, the Richmond Times Dispatch editorial board stated, “Through a spokesman, Cuccinelli says his office simply was defending the constitutionality of state law. That’s hard to swallow, given that the commonwealth is not a defendant in the case. There is also the matter of campaign contributions. CNX is a subsidiary of Consol Energy, which has given more than $100,000 to Cuccinelli’s election coffers.” [Richmond Times Dispatch Editorial, 6/21/13]

Editorial: Cuccinelli Office Role In Aiding Private Gas Companies “Shocking But Not Surprising” Give His “Cozy Relationship”

In June 2013 the Roanoke Times editorial board stated, “Shocking, but not surprising, given Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli’s cozy relationship with the coal and gas companies. So far this year, Consol (CNX) has given Cuccinelli’s gubernatorial campaign $86,000, according to the Virginia Public Access Project.” [Roanoke Times Editorial, 6/10/13]

Former Attorney General: Cuccinelli Office’s Actions Aiding Private Gas Companies was “Totally Inappropriate”

In June 2013, the Bristol Herald Courier reported, “Former Virginia Attorney General Mary Sue Terry has criticized current AG Kenneth T. Cuccinelli’s office over emails a staffer sent to attorneys representing two gas companies in a series of lawsuits over natural gas royalties in Southwest Virginia. ‘Speaking of boundaries, the conduct of the Assistant Attorney General in this case was totally inappropriate and wrong,’ Terry said in a statement emailed Wednesday by the campaign for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe.” [Bristol Herald Courier, 6/12/13]

Virginian-Pilot Editorial: “The level of involvement by Cuccinelli’s office in the current case is clearly inappropriate.” [Virginian-Pilot Editorial, 6/12/13]

Also note, we could use a LOT of people like this (of any age!) in the United States – informed, engaged, smart, progressive, for social justice and economic fairness, against fundamentalism and theocracy, etc. Maybe we could send an army of kids like this out to set the Teahadists’ heads back on straight? Although, on second thought, after years of brainwashing from right-wing propaganda outlets like Faux “News,” druggie Rush Limbaugh, etc., it would probably be a complete waste of time.

Michael Mann: “Scientists shouldn’t have to look over their shoulders”

0

The following email is from former UVA Professor Michael Mann, the target of Ken Cuccinelli's out-of-control witch hunt, using the power of the government against a scientist because Cuccinelli disagreed with him (and/or is doing the bidding of his masters in the fossil fuel industry). Meanwhile, as much as Ken Kookinelli and his fossil industry puppet masters might disagree, yet another, major new report finds "unprecedented" global warming since 2000. Who are you going to believe, 97% of climate scientists, or some political hacks and robber barons who profit from trashing the earth? Tough one, I know. 😉

"Scientists shouldn't have to look over their shoulders whenever they do work whose conclusions might offend somebody with a political ax to grind."

That's what the Richmond Times Dispatch had to say about Ken Cuccinelli's investigation of my research at the University of Virginia. He subpoenaed thousands of documents about my work in climate science — just because he didn't like my academic conclusions.

I've moved my research to Penn State, but I was back in the Commonwealth this week meeting with scientists and researchers at some of our leading universities to make sure they know one thing:

Terry McAuliffe believes science is science and thinks researchers should be able to do their work without government interference.

If you agree that science is science, please add your name to this petition telling Ken Cuccinelli that politicians have no business investigating scientific research they don't agree with:

Thanks for standing up for science — and for me.

Sincerely,

Professor Michael Mann

Virginia News Headlines: Saturday Morning

2

Here are a few Virginia (and national) news headlines, political and otherwise, for Saturday, July 6.

*Turmoil in streets signals Egypt’s deep divisions (“Violence surges in Cairo after ouster of president as civilians divide themselves into warring camps and battle in streets.”)

*Snowden offered asylum in Venezuela (President Maduro is a thug, and Venezuela certainly does NOT have the civil liberties protections Edward Snowden says he cares about…)

*Virginia Legislator Who Suggested McDonnell Resign Says He’s ‘An Army of One’

*Today’s top opinion: Wrap-up (RTD: “Bob McDonnell’s once seemed a formidable challenger. His electoral career has come to a premature end… he has become a punch line. Bad judgment will stain his legacy. He has only himself to blame.”)

*McDonnell Gift Disclosure Saga’s Potential Mark on VA (What we need to do is to get rid of McDonnell, but also to reform our campaign finance system in Virginia, big time. Oh, and we also need to get a professional Attorney General who will enforce the law, unlike Ken Kookinelli.)

*Cuccinelli’s debate bravado (He’s a bully and a coward.)

*McDonnell adds Northern Virginia business leaders to university boards

*Police seek person who fired shot that killed boy

*ABC changes policy after run-in with U.Va. students (” Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control officials announced Friday an ‘immediate change’ in agency practice to include a uniformed agent in operations like the one that landed a University of Virginia student in jail after the purchase of sparkling water.”)

*Dulles’ Grand Plan (“How did airport officials go from a 2005 expert’s warning of an impending traffic disaster around Dulles to instituting plans that would only accelerate the automotive Armageddon? How do airport authorities propose to make all of this work? How do they expect to get away with it? How will their schemes affect the citizens of Virginia?”)

*Rosslyn’s skyline being primed for transformation

*Solar Impulse plane sets off for New York in last leg (It had been at Dulles Airport the past couple weeks…)

*D.C. area forecast: A hot and steamy weekend; storm odds up after today

*Nats showing promise, topple Padres

Citizens of Loudoun County Line Up To Lambaste Slimeball/Anti-LGBT Bigot Eugene Delgaudio

0

At the July 3 Loudoun County Board of Supervisors meeting (see here for more), county residents (including Valerie Suzdak and Al Nevarez, shown here) line up to lambaste Supervisor Eugene Delgaudio for the misdeeds outlined in a grand jury report (see here for more on that). Note that Delgaudio is also the leader of an anti-LGBT hate organization at the same time that he serves a supervisor in Loudoun County. In other words, he’s an extremist AND corrupt…kinda like Ken Cuccinelli, come to think about it. Hmmmm…sensing a pattern here?

Rev. E.W. Jackson Silent About the Virginia GOP’s “Entitlement” Mentality

3

by Paul Goldman

While Reverend E.W. Jackson, aka the Virginia GOP candidate for Lt. Governor, loves to attack African-Americans and white liberals for having an “entitlement mentality” – the Romney 47% on the government dole kind of thing – the truth is now clear. In fact, the good Reverend is A-OK with the entitlement mentality being displayed daily by Republican Governor McDonnell and his wife.

I have not heard Mr. Jackson say one word about the fact the Republican Governor of Virginia intends to keep the $15k given to the First Family to pay for an extravagant Mansion wedding during a time when Republicans say the country was in a recession; the $15K shopping spree for the First Lady (heck, even Sarah Palin realized it was wrong and gave the clothes bought for her back); the $22k trip to the Final Four (like the First Family is a big fan of VCU basketball); the $6,500 Rolex watch (this is a retro status symbol at best!); and who knows what else is going to come out this month.

If a Democratic Governor had displayed this kind of “entitlement mentality,” Reverend E.W. Jackson would be doing another of his now infamous video rants calling the Democrat everything but a child of god. By my count, the entitlements listed above add up to $58.5k, which is way above the average annual income of the African-American poor blasted as slaves to the Democratic party by Reverend Jackson.

During the days of the famous Tammany Hall “Tweed Ring” in New York, where the politicians lived off their “entitlement mentality” by looting the city, legendary bagman George Washington Plunkett proudly told investigators, “I saw my opportunities and took’em.” I remember reading the indictment of some of the buys. They paid one of their buddies around $60k for the brooms at City Hall! At least Governor McDonnell and his wife figured they would take their $60k in something other than brooms. And yes, in terms of the time value of money, the $60k back then is worth a lot more than the $60k or so today.

BUT: The story of the McDonnell “entitlement mentality” is still to be written. The revelations of entitlement after entitlement have been going on for nearly 3 months in news story after news story. The Governor has not denied getting any of the entitlements. Indeed, he has refused to give any back, saying they were all legal to him and his family.

Reverend Jackson, in this period, has managed to attack every poor person in Virginia for having an entitlement mentality. I guess the Reverend missed that part where Jesus wisely advised: He who is without sin can go ahead and throw the first stone. Message to Rev. Jackson: the poor pay taxes on their hard-earned money. Indeed, the Republican Governor just raised taxes on the poor. But the Governor has not paid any tax on his nearly $60K in entitlements. Under the law, he could if he wanted. But he hasn’t.

After all, he is the Governor, his wife is First Lady, and they are heads of GOP entitlement society. More taxes on the poor: more free gifts for Republicans. That about sums up the GOP philosophy in 2013.
