Could One Word Spell the End for Mitt Romney: “Romnesia’s” Significance

1

When President Obama arrived at George Mason University on Friday, he threw a verbal grenade at Mitt Romney that liberal blogs had been entertaining for some time beforehand: “Romnesia.”

By now you’re probably already familiar with the quote, but for clarities sake, here it is again: “If you come down with a case of Romnesia and you can’t seem to remember the policies that are still on your website or the promises that you’ve made over the six years that you’ve been running for president, here’s the good news: Obamacare covers pre-existing conditions.”

Merely two days after President Obama’s utterance of this word, its use, and the discussion about its use, has appeared to “go viral.” Not only is “Romnesia” a catchy phrase, its one word that summarizes the fractured, round-about, disjointed, and contradictory policy positions of the former governor of Massachusetts.

Because of Romney’s contradictory policy positions and his inability to stand up to the most radical elements in his party, at least two major newspapers, one symbolic and one very salient for the upcoming election, have endorsed President Obama for president.

On Friday, the Salt Lake Tribune publicly endorsed President Obama for reelection in an editorial aptly named “Too Many Mitts.” As the heartland for Romney’s own religion, Mormonism, the Tribune’s rebuttal of Romney and ultimate endorsement of President Obama comes as a withering symbolic blow to the formers campaign.

On Saturday, as well, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Ohio’s largest newspaper, also endorsed President Obama for reelection in an editorial. The editorial noted,  “But Romney’s frequent changes raise questions about his core principles and make his lack of policy details all the more troubling. They make you wonder if he would stand up to the more extreme elements in his own party, especially to the House Republicans who undercut Ohioan John Boehner’s attempts to negotiate a deficit and debt deal.”[3]

As a key battleground state in the upcoming presidential election, the Plain Dealer’s endorsement of President Obama may have provided the final nail in the coffin for Romney’s already slim chances of winning Ohio.

If and when President Obama wins this November, “Romnesia” will almost certainly be pinned in the history books as the summarizing concept that encompasses 6 years worth of policy flip-flopping and subsequent voter disapproval. It’s potency as a phrase that can sum up Romney’s greatest flaws in three syllables is as brilliant as it is devastating for the Romney campaign.

You can shake off a bad debate performance, but you just can’t get rid of that awful condition of Romnesia. Now that the malady has been easily identified, voters can take the appropriate action at the polls November 6th.

Virginia News Headlines: Sunday Morning

1

Here are a few Virginia (and national) news headlines, political and otherwise, for Sunday, October 21.

*Tim Kaine for U.S. Senate (The Virginian Pilot says, “Without a doubt, the answer is Tim Kaine,” and that “Allen’s record from his single six-year term in the Senate, starting in 2001, is plagued with the kinds of votes that are toxic to any fiscally responsible voter, as well as the candidate Allen now claims to be…”)

*Battle for Virginia intensifies (“With just 16 days to go, the fight for Virginia’s all-important 13 electoral votes is intensifying, punctuating months of unrelenting visits by candidates and their surrogates and the inescapable echo chamber of political advertising.”)

*Editorial: Douglass is right for the 5th and nation (“Hurt contributes to the breakdown of responsible representative democracy, harming the nation” while “Douglass offers a stark and welcome contrast.”)

*Schapiro: Remley resignation exposes McDonnell’s far-right flank (“Slowly but surely, McDonnell’s camouflage has fallen away, beginning only days into his term with his refusal to extend anti-discrimination protections for gay public employees and perhaps ending Thursday with Remley’s resignation.”)

*Kaine, Allen hunt for votes the old-fashioned way

*Kaine finds new defense on Pentagon spending

*Susan Allen: Partisan politics hurting area

*Springsteen to appear in Charlottesville for Obama

*Obama to stop in Richmond during two-day campaign blitz

*Fighting the Goode fight – for president

*Hirschbiel uses intellect, passion to build consensus

*Rigell on data-driven mission to ‘elevate the facts’ (Is this snark? Rigell and FACTS? Seriously?)

*Profiles: Griffith, Flaccavento vie in 9th

*Cantor, Powell trade barbs in latest advertisements

*Opponents of Virginia power line plan say it zaps James River’s history

P.S. The Republican Times-Disgrace endorsed Felix Macacawitz (although not strongly, just barely) for Senate. No reason to link to it, as it’s the usual muddle-headed, right-wing claptrap you’d expect from Eric Can’tor’s editorial board…

Rove, Sproul, Koch all share Warrenton office with VA State Senator Vogel

2

In continuing fallout from the Harrisonburg voter registration incident, Brad Blog has turned up something that should surprise no one:  Karl Rove, Nathan Sproul, and Ed Gillispie are joined at the hip — along with Virginia State Senator Jill Holtzman Vogel.

As sharp-eyed BRAD BLOG commenter “Citizen92” noticed in those newly released documents, the “Key takeaway from this is that Strategic Allied Consulting has a business address of 45 North Hill Drive, Suite 100, Warrenton, VA.”

“Who else has a business address at 45 North Hill Drive?,” Citizen92 asked rhetorically, “American Crossroads, Karl Rove and Ed Gillespie’s 527 group.”

Indeed our good Citizen92 is correct, according to the IRS 527 filing for American Crossroads [PDF], the mailing address for Rove’s outfit is also 45 North Hill Drive, Suite 100, in Warrenton, VA.

The address belongs to HoltzmanVogelJosefiak PLLC, a top RNC law firm headed up by Jill Holtzman Vogel who also now serves as a Virginia State Senator from the 27th District.

Connolly: Issa’s Disclosure of Sensitive Info “could endanger the lives of U.S. personnel” in Libya

0

Good for Rep. Connolly, calling out the wildly irresponsible demagogue Darrell Issa for endangering American lives, exposing sensitive information on our operations in Libya, etc. Isn’t that what used to be known as “treason?”

Connolly Condemns Chairman Darrell Issa’s Dangerous Disclosure of Sensitive Information about U.S. Operations in Libya

Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-VA), a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued the following statement in response to Chairman Darrell Issa’s decision to publish sensitive documents about U.S. operations in Libya that could endanger the lives of U.S. personnel and Libyans working with them.

Chairman Issa’s decision to publish sensitive information that details ongoing U.S. operations in Libya and identifies, by name, Libyans working with us to achieve strategic national security goals in the region is extremely troubling.

Those of us entrusted with sensitive national security information must exercise extreme caution with the use of that information. Clearly Chairman Issa, in his zeal to damage the Administration, failed to exercise that caution.

The irony is that while Chairman Issa purports to be sincere in his desire to investigate the recent attack so that we can learn how best to protect our diplomats in the future, his own actions have now compromised the safety of U.S. personnel and Libyans working together to forge a better Libya.

Once again, Chairman Issa’s actions are a stain on the once-impeccable reputation of the House Oversight & Government Reform Committee. While the damage has probably already been done, I call on Chairman Issa to remove all sensitive and personal information from the Committee’s website. It is time for Chairman Issa to stop playing politics with our national security.

Just how bad is George Allen?–One more reason to Vote for Tim Kaine

0

If you didn’t live in Virginia when George Allen was Governor you may not understand just how anti-environmental he is.  In the US Senate he had an abysmal record but those were only votes.

It was as Governor where George Allen demonstrated his utter contempt for environmental laws.   Right after he was sworn in as Governor, he gutted the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.  Allen, bringing in what we then caused “wise users” at the time to run this key environmental agency is today’s equivalent of putting the Tea Party in charge.  There were mass firings and mass resignations of agency staffers who refused to follow orders to ignore pollution violations.

Allen also interfered with an on going EPA lawsuit against Smithfield Foods for water pollution.  The CEO of Smithfield at the time, Joe Luter, gave Allen a $100,000 campaign contribution and after Allen was elected he had the state intervene in that EPA lawsuit, effectively neutralizing federal action against Smithfield.  As unethical as this may sound, it apparently is not illegal in Virginia where there is no limit on campaign contributions.

The Allen Administration even lied to the US EPA about the status of data collected on toxic emissions. When the EPA sought the toxic pollution data from the state, the response was that they did not have it, all the while it was actually locked in safe at the DEQ.

If elected to the US Senate, George Allen will continue his war against the environment, attacking EPA funding and regulations and voting as he has before to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling.  We must not let this happen.

Will Votergate Come Back to Haunt Cuccinelli?

18

Watergate started with a third-rate burglary at the Democratic headquarters that got little attention at the time.  The recent arrest of a young Republican operative dumping voter registration forms in the trash has received no more coverage than that.  Maybe it is just an “isolated incident” as the State Board of Elections claims.  But Salon’s Brad Friedman builds a compelling case by connecting this dot with others, that we could be witnessing a full-fledged Republican conspiracy to suppress Democratic voter registration through outright election fraud.

That is, to be clear, a theory — we don’t know all the facts yet.  But the reason we have law enforcement officials is to investigate suspicious incidents and prosecute the guilty.  And this brings us to the top legal authority in the state, Attorney General Cuccinelli.

Where is he?  For a couple years now, Republican officials have been wailing about what a problem voter and election fraud are and how we need to act against these threats.  Yet faced with evidence of genuine election fraud happening — in his very own state — Cuccinelli is silent.

We know that he has political incentives to stay silent if he so chooses — because it is less than three weeks away from a major election and why would he want to rock the boat for his party in that time?  But being Attorney General is about much more than party politics.  It’s supposed to be about upholding the law and investigating potential violations of it, wherever they may lead.

While there is lots of room for partisanship on the issues where we may disagree, upholding the law is supposed to be one of those areas where politics must not interfere.  Justice is the blindfolded lady holding the scales.  She doesn’t wear the button of either party on her gown.

If Cuccinelli continues to ignore calls to investigate this potential scandal in his own back yard, this could well turn into the Achilles’ heel that cripples him in his race for governor next year.  He would not be able to portray himself as a fighter for freedom or justice or any other of the great principles he claims to follow if he is revealed to be just another partisan hack suppressing criminal investigations to help his party.  This is a line of attack that would resonate not just with Democrats but with independents and even with principled Republicans.

While I doubt that he cares about any of these principles, I have no doubt that AG Cuccinelli cares very deeply about preserving his own hide.  But Votergate, if it mushrooms, could well be the anchor that brings down his whole career.

As Senator McEachin and others have stated,  Cuccinelli as AG has a responsibility today to get to the bottom of this situation and find out if there is anything deeper going on there.  He will be judged by his actions, one way or another.

PPP: Obama Holds 2-Point Lead in Virginia with Just Over 2 Weeks to Go

5

Hot off the presses from PPP.

A new Public Policy Polling survey in Virginia, conducted on behalf of Health Care for America Now, finds Barack Obama continuing to hold onto a lead in the state at 49% to 47% for Mitt Romney. PPP has conducted three Virginia polls since the first Presidential debate and has found Obama with a 1-3 point advantage on each of them.

In other words, this race is very much President Obama’s – and ours – to win right now, but it’s close. So close, in fact, that it could very well come down to which party is more effective in getting out its vote. Which is why, if you have any free time at all the next 2 weeks, and you can possibly spend some of that helping GOTV, please do so. Not to put too much pressure on, but the future of our country could very well depend on what YOU do the next two weeks. 🙂 Thanks.

P.S. Plus, we have to counter Republican voter suppression efforts like this.

Virginia News Headlines: Saturday Morning

5

Here are a few Virginia (and national) news headlines, political and otherwise, for Saturday, October 20. Also, check out President Obama’s weekly address, in which he “urges Congress to act to build on the momentum we are seeing in the housing market by helping responsible homeowners refinance, saving $3000 a year.”

*Unemployment rate drops in 41 states, including most swing states (More good economic news, in addition to the rebound in the housing market. Looks like we’re gaining momentum under President Obama – let’s keep it going in 2013 and beyond!)

*Man with ties to Va. GOP is charged with voter registration fraud (Wow, the Washington Post FINALLY decided to cover this story that many others have been all over for days now? And of course they don’t mention that NLS broke the story and continues to follow up. Journalistic ethics at the Post? Meh.)

*Too many Mitts (Mitt Romney’s home town newspaper, the Salt Lake Tribune, endorses…President Obama for another term!)

*Romney campaign’s Benghazi misfire? (“In aftermath of attacks, CIA ‘talking points’ backed Susan Rice’s descriptions, official says.”)

*Tea party help for Dems (“Ideological purity keeps the Senate from the GOP.”)

*At GMU, Obama says Romney suffers from ‘Romnesia’

*Campaigning in Virginia, Obama Presses Fight for Women’s Vote

*New Jersey’s Christie touts Romney in Henrico

*Kaine gets support from former GOP legislators

*Warner nixes fiscal cliff fundraiser

*Romney shifts campaign personnel to Virginia

*Candidate’s wife talks health care in Danville

*Cuccinelli: Va. health commissioner’s resignation is political statement (Gotta love it, coming from someone for whom everything is political and/or ideological. What a joke.)

*Kaine, Allen address Hampton Roads Chamber

*In Norfolk, Kaine and Allen clash on spending cuts

*Five candidates square off for Portsmouth council

*Coal, health care dominate 9th District congressional debate

*News 5 Congressional Debate: Morgan Griffith & Anthony Flaccavento (Videos)

P.S. If you need yet another reason to vote AGAINST George “Felix Macacawitz” Allen, how about this endorsement by the extremist, right-wing loony bin rag the Washington Examiner? This paper is rabid, bat**** crazy, a fever swamp of insanity, and they’re all for George Allen. Any further questions?

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Each day women across this country continue to battle issues of inequality. The sad fact is that women still make seventy-four cents on the dollar in comparison to us men. By remaining stagnant on this issue, by simply brushing it aside, keeping it in the back of our minds, we remain committed to an all too familiar phrase, “separate, but equal.”

The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), passed by Congress in 1972, would have become the 27th Amendment to the Constitution if three-fourths of the states had ratified it by June 30, 1982. However, that date passed with only 35 of the necessary 38 state ratifications. Instead, the 27th Amendment is the “Madison Amendment,” concerning Congressional pay raises, which went to the states for ratification in 1789 and reached the three-fourths goal in 1992.

The fact that a 203-year ratification period was accepted as valid has led ERA supporters to propose that Congress has the power to maintain the legal viability of the ERA and the existing 35 state ratifications. If so, only three more state ratifications would be needed to make the ERA part of the Constitution. Legal analysis supporting this strategy was developed in 1995 by Allison Held, Sheryl Herndon and Danielle Stager, then third-year law students at the T. C. Williams School of Law in Richmond, VA. Their article, “Why the ERA Remains Legally Viable and Properly Before the States,” was published in the Spring 1997 issue of William & Mary Journal of Women and the Law.

The Commonwealth of Virginia remains one of the fifteen states to yet ratify the ERA. This should be an embarrassing fact for all of us Virginians. I ask you to join with me, in asking our elected leaders to place the ERA back on the state’s agenda, which if ratified by Virginia would place it back onto the national agenda as well. We would be just two states away from finishing the job of amending the constitution.

The Equal Rights Amendment isn’t about politicians scoring some political points. It’s about the girl who wants equal opportunity in school. It’s about the single mother who can’t get a mortgage or a small business loan. It’s about the woman who faces harassment in her place of work and violence in her home. The ERA is not going to solve all of these problems, but it will help.

Alice Paul wrote the original amendment way back in 1923, just after women had won the right to vote. Many detractors had told her that the battle for equality was over, but Alice Paul fought onward. She’d like to quote an adage she had learned from her mother, a farmer. “When you put your hand to the plow, you can’t put it down until you get to the end of the row.”

And so, like Alice Paul and some many others who have come after her, we fight on. We take one step forward, then another and another. We shall keep our hands to the plow.

In the Declaration of Independence, “The first truth to be held as self-evident is that all men are created equal,” since women didn’t win the right to vote until about a century and a half later, I’m afraid we have to assume that they did mean “men.”

Now, we can’t amend the Declaration of Independence, but we can and must amend the constitution to make absolutely sure that women have all of the equal rights and privileges, as do men.

Sign the petition below to push Virginia to finally ratify the ERA!
