See below for the latest in the VA-05 Republican nominating contest between right-wing Rep. Denver Riggleman and possibly-even-further-right-wing challenger Bob Good, including Riggleman lashing out at Good’s “vile and disgusting” tactics, and a press release from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) on the “nasty” race.

For more background on this race, see Bob Good vs. Denver Riggleman in VA-05 GOP Nominating Contest: Threatened Lawsuit, Accusation of Intimidation, etc.; Does Denver Riggleman Approve of Supporter Jerry Falwell Jr.’s COVID-19 Response?; National Journal: How Much Trouble is Denver Riggleman in?; etc. Also, for the Blue Virginia interviews with two of the Democratic VA-05 candidates, see VA-05 Democratic Candidate Dr. Cameron Webb on COVID-19, Healthcare in America, the Climate Crisis, How He Thinks He Can Defeat Denver Riggleman in November and Interview: VA-05 Dem Candidate John Lesinski Discusses Why He’s Running, How He Can Win, How Denver Riggleman Has Failed to Stand Up to Trump – a “Sociopath with An Insatiable Ego.” The other two Democratic candidates vying to take on Riggleman or Good are Claire Russo and RD Huffstetler.

Finally, note that this is a red district, but also that 2018 Democratic nominee Leslie Cockburn received 47% of the vote, so…it’s possible, given a “blue wave” election in November, a strong Democratic nominee and potentially a bitterly divided Republican Party after Riggleman and Good get done savaging each other.

“Vile and Disgusting”: The VA-05 GOP Primary Turns Nasty

The gloves have come off in Virginia’s 5th Congressional District GOP primary between Bob Good and Congressman Denver Riggleman.

Seemingly aware that his entire district’s GOP committee has turned on him, Riggleman has gone negative, blasting Good in a direct to camera video in which he called Good’s campaign “vile and disgusting” and in an email accusing Good of “voter intimidation.”

This accusation comes weeks after Good claimed he’d secured a majority of nominating convention delegates and just days after Good’s FEC filings showed he not only received another donation from a district committemember, but now two of them are on Good’s payroll!

The details around the date and method of the Republicans nominating convention have still yet to be determined. But once they do, sparks are going to fly.

DCCC Spokesperson Sarah Guggenheimer issued the following statement:

“As the ultra-conservative, out-of-touch Bob Good continues to gain support and threats of messy litigation continue to fly, one thing’s for sure: thanks to manipulation and blatant opposition from the Virginia GOP, Denver Riggleman is in trouble. And he knows it.”
