Video: Rep. Gerry Connolly Skewers Joe LIEberman’s Idiocy on Iran Deal

1

Just when you think that warmongering nincompoop Joe LIEberman has gone away…he’s baaaaack! This time,  he’s trashing the Iran agreement even before reading it or having any idea what he’s talking about. Anyway, good for Rep. Connolly for skewering LIEberman’s “mishegas.”

Rep. Connolly: “I must say, Sen. Lieberman, I’m troubled by things you’ve said here today. You agreed with Congressman McCaul, you said you agreed with everything he said. One of the things he said was why engage with Iran at all? Do you think it was a mistake to engage with Iran at all?” (answer from LIEberman is a bunch of b.s.)

Rep. Connolly, responding acidly to LIEberman trashing the Iran deal as “not a good one” for the U.S. and its allies, without even reading it: “Yes, I heard you say that. In fact, I heard you council us we should vote not. Seems awfully early to do that, but apparently you’ve made up your mind. (LIEberman says “I have”) Well I haven’t.”

Rep. Connolly: “We can’t pretend that there’s a perfect alternative…You also said we could just go back to the P5+1 and say we just couldn’t sell it let’s start over again…Sen. Lieberman, I don’t know anybody who believes that that has any high probability of success. As a matter of fact, the exact opposite is likely to happen. If we disavow this agreement, P5+1 falls apart, and Iran races, not walks, to accelerate its nuclear development program and they’re not about to come back to the table…” (LIEberman’s answer — “well I don’t know”)

Ugh, what an embarrassment that LIEberman used to represent the state I grew up in.

All Anyone Needs to Know about Scott Walker

1

In America today, corporate profits are a larger portion of the GDP of the United States than at any time in our nation’s history.

In America today, the proportion of GDP that goes to workers’ wages is lower than it has been in living memory.

In this situation, this is what Scott Walker has done in Wisconsin: he has cut taxes for the rich corporations, and waged war against his state’s workers.

What more should anyone need to know?

Rep. Don Beyer Applauds President Obama’s Iran Deal

7

Here’s a statement on the Iran deal from Rep. Don Beyer. Also, see the statement from Sen. Tim Kaine on the “flip.” Personally, my initial reaction to this deal is that we all need to look at the fine print, but that in general it’s the “least bad” option when it comes to Iran, given that the second “least bad” option was basically endless bombing/war/sanctions (the latter would eventually fall apart, as the international coalition would splinter) to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon. Having said that, of course I don’t trust Iran’s horrendous, human-rights-abusing, terrorism-sponsoring, expansionistic theocratic dictatorship in any way, but unless anyone has a better idea regarding how to keep Iran from getting nuclear weapons, I really don’t feel like listening to hysterics from the usual suspects – John McCain, Linsdey Graham, Bibi Netanyahu, etc. I’d also note that the Bush administration completely failed to head off Iran from pursuing a nuclear weapons program in 8 years of their administration, and that yet again a Democratic administration appears to have achieved what a Republican administration couldn’t. Shocker, eh? 😉

July 14, 2015 (Washington, DC) – Congressman Don Beyer, former Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein, applauded the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action negotiated by the Obama Administration’s and the P5+1 Group with Iran over its nuclear program:

“This is an historic accomplishment for President Obama, Secretary Kerry, the American negotiators, and the diplomatic process to prevent Iran’s nuclear ambitions,” said Rep. Beyer. “I commend our diplomats for skillfully averting a global showdown and blocking Iran’s efforts to obtain the bomb.”

Today’s deal, announced by Secretary Kerry this morning, is in line with the April 2nd framework agreed to in Lausanne and imposes significant obstacles blocking Iran’s path to a nuclear weapon in exchange for sanctions relief, dependent on critical nonproliferation commitments.

Beyer continued: “We cannot allow a nuclear Iran and this deal will serve as a lasting deterrent to keep the United States out of another devastating war in the Middle East.  Now I look forward to working with my colleagues in Congress to ensure this deal goes forward unhindered.”

As Ambassador to Switzerland, Rep. Beyer hosted negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 countries and Germany in Switzerland, including the meeting in November 2013 during which the six countries concluded the primary agreement with Iran, known as the Joint Plan of Action (JPOA).

KAINE STATEMENT ON IRAN NUCLEAR AGREEMENT

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tim Kaine, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement on the Iran nuclear deal:

“I applaud the U.S. negotiating team for its hard work to find a diplomatic solution to peacefully limit Iran’s nuclear program.  A nation’s commitment to diplomacy is every bit as important as its commitment to military strength.  Now that the negotiations have concluded, Congress must give the deal a thorough and independent review to ensure it cuts off all of Iran’s pathways to a nuclear weapon.

“One of the key reasons I co-authored the bipartisan Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act, even over the initial objections of many in my party and the Administration, was to provide Congress a clear and constructive way to review a final nuclear deal.  Given that the deal largely hinges on what Iran must do to get relief from sanctions imposed by Congress, the American public deserves to have its elected representatives review any final deal to ensure it is in our national security interest. In the days and weeks ahead, I look forward to discussing the terms of the agreement in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and examining the details before making a decision to either approve or disapprove the deal, which will provide Iran significant relief from economic sanctions. I look forward to working with my Senate colleagues to analyze this deal in the days and weeks ahead.”

DECLARACIONES DE KAINE SOBRE EL ACUERDO NUCLEAR CON IRÁN

WASHINGTON, D.C.

The strategy recycled tactics used under previous governors.”)

EW Jackson Rants About “rainbow military uniforms”; “transgender madness”

5

You know, when people are THIS obsessed with other people’s sexuality, gender identity, etc., it kinda makes one wonder. I mean, do you have something you’d like to share with us, E.W.? Or maybe you and Dick Black, Eugene Delgaudio, etc. should all just “hug it out?” LOL

P.S. Again, just as a reminder, this raving maniac really was the Virginia Republican Party’s 2013 nominee for Lt. Governor of our state.

Susan Hippen Campaign: Virginia Delegate Ron Villanueva “Out of Step on Ethics Reform”

0

From the Susan Hippen for Virginia House of Delegates campaign:

Virginia Beach – Delegate Ron Villanueva recently signed onto an Amicus Brief in support of former Governor Bob McDonnell that stated that unless McDonnell’s convictions are overturned, “Virginia’s legislators may be forced to scale back constituent services and other socially beneficial efforts, such as encouraging business development in their districts.” [Amici, page 9]

This highlights how career politician Delegate Villanueva has become so out of touch with Virginia voters and why we need a fresh perspective in Richmond.” said candidate for Delegate Susan Hippen.

“The idea that state legislators will simply give up working to solve our broken transportation network or improve our children’s education unless they are allowed to keep receiving free gifts of fancy watches and expensive dinners is offensive and absurd.”

As stated by Quentin Kidd of CNU, “There is a very strong disconnection between what the Virginia public thinks is over the line and illegal and what the political class thinks is acceptable behavior on the part of public officials.”  That thinking has to stop before Richmond turns even more into Washington DC.

National and Virginia News Headlines: Monday Morning

7

Here are a few national and Virginia news headlines, political and otherwise, for Monday, July 13. Oh, and check out the latest insanity from the Virginia GOP’s 2013 Lt. Governor nominee, including these unhinged ravings and his anti-LGBT conference call with a fellow extremist tomorrow at noon (Number: (712) 432-0900; Passcode: 199176#). Again, I can’t emphasize enough that Virginia Republicans actually nominated this lunatic, along with fellow right-wing nutjobs Ken Cuccinelli and Mark “Criminalize Miscarriages” Obenshain. What does this say about the Virginia GOP, currently led by a guy who likes to make anti-Semitic “jokes?”

*European leaders agree on rescue plan for Greece (“The deal was reached after a grueling 17-hour bargaining session in Brussels that will be remembered as one of the most bruising diplomatic standoffs in European Union history.”)

*Deal in Iran talks imminent (“Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in Vienna, a strong indication that the six world powers negotiating with Iran – the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany – are preparing to make a major announcement.”)

*The argument against common-sense gun control crumbles

*Hillary Clinton’s economic bet

*Jim Webb: Democratic Party has ‘moved way far to the left’ (That is both false, crazy, and internally contradictory, since Webb himself claims to be an economic populist and social libertarian. I’m honestly starting to conclude that Webb just says whatever, no rhyme or reason to it other than promoting himself. Blech.)

*Governor to announce $553 million Virginia budget surplus (“Almost a year after revising Virginia’s budget forecast downward to project a $2.4 billion shortfall, Gov. Terry McAuliffe today will announce a record revenue surplus for the fiscal year that ended June 30, according to sources in the administration and General Assembly.”)

*Presidential candidates gear up for efforts to be included in Va. primary (“Each of the 14 Republicans and five Democrats in the race have to collect at least 5,000 signatures of registered voters by Dec. 10 – with state election officials recommending they gather 7,500 to 10,000 to guard against invalid signatures… At least 200 voters from each of the state’s 11 congressional districts must sign a petitions, with election officials suggesting at least 300.”)

*Krugman: The Laziness Dogma (“Americans work longer hours than their counterparts in just about every other wealthy country…But Jeb Bush – who is still attempting to justify his ludicrous claim that he can double our rate of economic growth – says that Americans ‘need to work longer hours and through their productivity gain more income for their families.'”)

*Lost in the Immigration Frenzy (“A crime sets off a wave of finger-pointing, but there are good reasons for local authorities to avoid the role of immigration enforcers.”)

*Virginia’s Rep. Barbara Comstock has raised $1 million for reelection

*Kaine and Warner: Unfair Chinese trade practices are hurting Salem workers

*Max Scherzer throws another gem, and Nats beat O’s to cruise into all-star break

*D.C. area forecast: Relentless rains – Shower chances many days this week

So Who Are Dems Going to Run Against Right-Wingnut Barbara Comstock?

18

The photo is of Rep. Barbara Comstock (R-10th CD) with some real doozies: the bat****-crazy State Sen. Dick Black (R, of course)) and Del. Dave “Sharia Law” LaRock (R, also of course). It’s not surprising, given Comstock’s own record, not to mention her 2014 endorsements by characters like right-wing hate radio hosts Mark “You’re absolutely right about” ‘death panels'” Levin and Sean “Muslim Victory Call” Hannity; Sen. Rick “Man on Dog” Santorum; Penny “Age of Reason Led to Holocaust” Nance of the virulently homophobic, Islamophobic, theocratic “Concerned Women for America;” Brent “Skinny, Ghetto Crackhead” Bozell; etc.

Anyway, I think it’s clear at this point that Comstock’s no moderate, or even mainstream conservative, given her support so many right-wing extremists, bigots, nuts, etc. So you’d think Democrats would be able to defeat her fairly easily in 2016, a presidential election year, in the “purple” 10th CD. Except for a couple big problems: 1) she’s a super-tough, tenacious and skillful campaigner, despite her extremism (which she manages to hide, with an able assist by a corporate media that won’t call her out); and 2) Democrats need to find a strong candidate to run against her, which to my knowledge they haven’t done yet. Oh yeah, one more huge obstacle: the Washington Post reports:

More than a year before Rep. Barbara Comstock (R-Va.) asks Northern Virginians to send her back to Congress, the freshman has raised more than $1 million in campaign funds.

Comstock pulled in $685,000 between April and June, according to fundraising figures that her campaign provided to The Washington Post. The contributions are due to be reported to the Federal Election Commission by July 15.

The new donations bring Comstock’s total fundraising haul since her election last year to $1.1 million, with about $862,000 in cash on hand.

Comstock’s early fundraising success could make it harder for Democrats to knock her off in 2016. No Democrat has entered the race yet.

So here’s the thing: if Democrats don’t recruit a super-strong candidate soon, our chances of beating Comstock next year will start looking shaky at best. And here’s the other thing: if Comstock wins reelection next year, she’ll be entrenched in there and good luck ever defeating her (she’s ambitious, too, and could run for higher office – U.S. Senate, Governor, even President). So what’s the plan by the “Blue Team”? Got me.

Webb: Trump’s “Inflammatory Rhetoric” on Latinos Like Liberal Rhetoric on “Southern White Culture”

12

The hell? In what universe is there any equivalence between Donald Trump’s ugly, racist, xenophobic, demagoguery-laden, clownish comments on Latino/Hispanic immigrants and liberal “rhetoric” on “southern white culture” (e.g., liberals’ desire to see symbols of racism – and racism itself – disappear into the dustbin of history)?!? As for Webb’s comment that the Democratic Party has moved “way far to the left,” and how “that’s not my Democratic Party,” those comments are both bizarre and interally contradictory, coming from someone who is a social libertarian (pro-choice, pro-LGBT equality) and a self-proclaimed “Jacksonian populist” who has talked for years about the threat posed by rising income inequality (“the rich getting richer, the poor getting poorer, the middle class getting squeezed”). Other than those issues, where Webb IS on the “left” broadly speaking, what on earth is he referring to? If he’s talking about a Democratic Party that focuses more on working class people, which is clearly what he wants, then you’d think Webb would WANT the Democratic Party to become less beholden to corporate interests and more “left” leaning. It’s just a fundamental, internal contradiction in Webb’s rhetoric that cannot be reconciled. Finally, Webb really needs to stop with this “both sides” crap, as it’s intellectually dishonest and lazy, among other problems.
