STATEMENT: Romney’s New Welfare Ad Show He’ll Say Anything To Win

Chicago, IL—Obama campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith released the following statement on Mitt Romney’s new TV ad, which revives a widely discredited welfare attack:

“Now that his false claims about Jeep moving to China have been debunked, Mitt Romney’s desperation has brought him back to his old welfare lie – showing once again that there’s nothing he won’t say to win this election. The welfare attack he repeats in his new ad has been called false by every major fact-checking organization, President Clinton, Newt Gingrich, and a Republican architect of welfare reform. If the American people can’t trust Mitt Romney’s words in his campaign ads, how could they ever trust him with the presidency?”

MITT ROMNEY AND PAUL RYAN CONTINUE FALSE ATTACKS ON THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION’S WELFARE ACTION, EVEN THOUGH “EVERY MAJOR FACT-CHECKING ORGANIZATION SAYS THE ATTACKS ARE FALSE”

National Public Radio: “Republican Mitt Romney Keeps Saying That President Obama Has Gutted The Law, Even Though Every Major Fact-Checking Organization Says The Attacks Are False.” [National Public Radio, 8/22/12]

New York Times Editorial: Mitt Romney’s Claim Is “Blatantly False.” “Mitt Romney’s campaign has hit new depths of truth-twisting with its accusation that President Obama plans to ‘gut welfare reform’ by ending federal work requirements. The claim is blatantly false, but it says a great deal about Mr. Romney’s increasingly desperate desire to define the president as something he is not.” [Editorial, New York Times, 08/09/12]

Associated Press: “Paul Ryan Says President Obama Wants To Ease Work Requirements For Welfare Recipients Even Though That Claim Has Been Largely Debunked By Independent Fact Checkers.” “Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan says President Barack Obama wants to ease work requirements for welfare recipients even though that claim has been largely debunked by independent fact checkers.” [Associated Press, 08/24/12]

CNN Fact Checker: “This Is Clearly Not An Effort By The President To Kill Off The Welfare Work Requirements… And We Rate It False.” From a CNN transcript: “COSTELLO: The Romney campaign rolling out yet another commercial blasting President Obama for stripping the work requirement out of welfare. Republicans are expected to attack the President on that point at their convention, too, but is it true? Our fact checker Tom Foreman has been sifting through the evidence. …FOREMAN: That might in a small way change precisely how work is calculated, but the essential goal of pushing welfare recipients to work remains in place. That's pretty much it. This is clearly not an effort by the President to kill off the welfare work requirements. That's why even some Republicans backed away. Governor Romney's claim doesn't work. And we rate it false. Tom Foreman, CNN, Washington.” [CNN Fact Check, 08/22/12]

PRESIDENT CLINTON CRITICIZED ROMNEY’S ATTACKS AND CONFIRMED PRESIDENT OBAMA’S COMMITMENT TO STRENGTHENING THE CENTRAL TENETS OF WELFARE REFORM

President Clinton: Governor Romney’s Ad Alleging That President Obama Weakened The Work Requirements Of The 1996 Welfare Reform Act “Is Not True.” “Governor Romney released an ad today alleging that the Obama administration had weakened the work requirements of the 1996 Welfare Reform Act. That is not true.” [Statement by President Bill Clinton on Governor Mitt Romney's New Television Advertisement, 08/07/12]

·         Washington Post: Romney’s Ad Drew “A Direct Rebuke Of Romney By Clinton Himself, Who Called It False.” “But the charge drew immediate push back from the Obama campaign, and a direct rebuke of Romney by Clinton himself, who called it false.” [Washington Post, 08/13/12]

President Clinton: “The Welfare Time Limits, Another Important Feature Of The 1996 Act, Will Not Be Waived.” [Statement by President Bill Clinton on Governor Mitt Romney's New Television Advertisement, 08/07/12]

A REPUBLICAN ARCHITECT OF WELFARE REFORM, RON HASKINS, AND REPUBLICANS LIKE NEWT GINGRICH, ADMIT THERE IS NOT SUPPORT FOR THE ROMNEY CAMPAIGN’S ATTACK SUPPORTS WAIVERS AND CRITICIZED MITT ROMNEY’S AD

Washington Post Wonkblog: One Of The Architects Of Welfare Reform, Ron Haskins, Argues That Waivers Are What Made Welfare Reform Possible And Enthusiastically Supports The Actual Policy Of The Waivers. “But Haskins enthusiastically supports the actual policy of the waivers. Waivers are what made welfare reform possible in the first place, he argues, by letting states experiment with new practices and they can be useful going forward. For instance, he thinks they might offer a way around limitations that prevent welfare checks from going to employers to subsidize the hiring of welfare recipients, rather than to the recipients directly. Such combined welfare-work programs, Haskins believes, hold a lot of promise… In sum, Haskins says, ‘The Republican alarm on welfare reform might be a little exaggerated.’ Coming from one of the architects of the reform, that should cast some doubt on Romney’s attacks.” [Washington Post, WonkBlog, 8/7/12]

Ron Haskins: “There’s No Plausible Scenario Under Which It Really Constitutes A Serious Attack On Welfare Reform.” “There's no plausible scenario under which it really constitutes a serious attack on welfare reform.” [National Public Radio Morning Edition, 08/08/12]

Ron Haskins, A Republican Architect Of Welfare Reform: “Romney Himself Talks About Giving The States More Flexibility… Now All Of A Sudden The States Shouldn’t Get The Flexibility Because They Are Going To Mess It Up? It Doesn’t Make Sense.” From FactCheck.org: “Haskins notes that historically the ‘Republicans are the ones who talk about giving the states more flexibility. Romney himself talks about giving the states more flexibility. Now all of a sudden the states shouldn’t get the flexibility because they are going to mess it up?’ he says. ‘It doesn’t make sense.’” [FactCheck.org, 08/09/12]

Huffington Post Headline: “Ron Haskins, GOP Welfare Reform Architect, Blasts Mitt Romney Ad” [Huffington Post, 8/8/12]

Newt Gingrich: “We Have No Proof” To Support Romney’s Welfare Attack. “COOPER: So you think the wording of the ad is not actually accurate, that it is too straightforward? GINGRICH: Well, I think the ad does assert, but this is a political ad. In 30 seconds you tend not to get all the various amendments and things…COOPER: But accuracy is important. …GINGRICH: We have no proof today, but I would say to you under Obama’s ideology it is absolutely true that he would be comfortable sending a lot of people checks for doing nothing.” [CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360, 08/08/12]

Romney University 102: What Mitt Romney’s budget cuts mean for Virginia

0

Today’s Romney University video from former Congressman Tom Perriello is What Mitt Romney’s budget cuts mean for Virginia. It is based our joint report with the Center for American Progress Action Fund.

The Romney-Ryan budget cuts include:

  • Drastic cuts to federal spending would shrink Virginia’s middle class. The state stands to lose more than $46 billion in federal funding from 2013 through 2022, an average of more than $4.6 billion a year, from cuts to schools, law enforcement, highway repairs, job-training programs and more. These cuts would fall predominantly on middle-class and low-income families, especially cuts to education programs that would result in nearly $156 million in reduced federal support for education and job training in the state in 2013 and $361 million in 2014 alone.

Cost of romney to Virginia.jpg

  • The Head Start program for pre-Kindergarten children would be crippled. Under their plan, in 2013 alone Head Start in Virginia would lose $16 million, resulting in 2220 slots for children eliminated and 888 job losses. In 2014 those numbers jump to $38 million in cuts, resulting in 4,791 slots for children eliminated and 2,154 jobs lost.
  • Special education funding would be slashed. Under their plan $45 million in cuts for special-education grants would result in the costs for 24,785 students’ special instruction being shifted to the states, jeopardizing their education and costing 644 jobs to be lost. But in 2014, these cuts become even more drastic with the cuts increasing to $103 million, resulting in 57,306 children at risk of no longer having their classes and 1,472 jobs being cut.
  • Big cuts for colleges and aspiring students. The Romney-Ryan budget would so severely restrict Pell Grant eligibility that more than 1 million low- and middle-income students would no longer be able to count on them to help pay for college. Cuts to these grants would be devastating to the 192,144 Virginia students who depend upon them to further their education. The average Pell Grant to Virginia students under the Romney-Ryan plan would be cut by about $850 a year.

Video: President Obama at Red Cross Points Out This Storm is Not Yet Over, Says No Red Tape!

President Obama, leading the nation in this time of crisis. Meanwhile, what’s Willard up to? Don’t ask. Oh, and gotta love this – Christie and Obama will tour New Jersey tomorrow, Willard not invited (and after Christie lavishly praised President Obama for all the help he’s given New Jersey, how accessible he’s been, etc.). As my friend Cliff Schecter says, “Oh what I’d give to be in rooms where GOP Insiders are talking about Chris Christie right now.” LOL, me too! 🙂

Clinton Calls Out Mitt’s Mockery Of Climate Change In Sandy’s Wake

0

Of course, it’s not just Romney who mocks science, climate change, and clean energy, it’s pretty much the entire know-nothing, flat-earth, science-hating Republican Party. And why is that? Two main reasons. First, money, and lots of it, to Republican politicians from fossil fuel companies, all of whom have huge profits to protect and would love nothing better than to strangle the competition (solar, wind, energy efficiency, etc.) in its cradle. Second, the Republican “base” who believe the “end times” are coming anyway, so why bother protecting our planet (they figure they’ll all be raptured anyway). Plus, a significant segment of these people are fed a steady diet of brain-rotting trash by the Rush Limbaughs and Faux “News” “personalities” of the world, so what else can we expect? Sad, though, as they’re just as likely – or more so, if they’re not wealthy and can’t buy their way out of it – to suffer from the consequences of climate change as anyone else. Anyway, it’s great to see Bill Clinton calling out the Republicans for their nihilistic know-nothingism. I just wish we’d get a lot more of this kind of talk from leading Democrats…mocking the mockers for a change!

Del. Keam: Update From Bob McDonnell on Sandy’s Virginia Impacts

0

Thanks to Delegate Mark Keam for this thorough, timely update on Sandy’s impacts on Virginia.

I was just on another daily conference call with Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and public safety officials. This will be the last scheduled daily call from the state’s leadership about Hurricane Sandy.

Here are some highlights and helpful information as interpreted by me (i.e., not necessarily verbatim from the Governor):

— Thankfully, the worst is over and Virginia didn’t suffer as much damage as originally anticipated. For those impacted, this was clearly a serious weather incident, but we all thank God that it wasn’t more extensive.

— It’s too early to know the full extent of damage, but efforts are under way to make evaluations. Concerns remain with rising water and power outages and dangers that remain, so everyone needs to continue to be on guard over the next several days.

— There have been two storm-related traffic fatalities in Virginia confirmed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The deaths occurred in the Central Region of the state. Additional details are not yet available. No other storm-related deaths have been reported. our hearts and prayers go out to the victims and their families.

— No major communications outages are reported.

Lots more on the “flip”

— Power Outages: At 10:30 a.m., reported power outages were at 181,000 statewide. The greatest increases in outages overnight occurred in northern and southwest Virginia. Utilities hope to have all power restored by Thursday night.

— 280 roads, mostly secondary roads, are closed across Virginia. Road conditions in several areas of the Commonwealth are very slick because of rain, snow, black ice and/or wet leaves. Motorists are urged to use caution when driving.

— 143 secondary roads in Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties are closed due to either high water, downed trees and/or power lines. The majority of these roads are in Fairfax County. A complete list of road closures and advisories, sortable by county, is available at 511virginia.org/mobile

— Motorists are cautioned that 107 signals in northern Virginia are not functioning. If traffic signal is out, motorists should treat the intersection as a four-way stop.

— Statewide from Sunday, Oct. 28, thru 6 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, VA State Troopers responded to 2,549 traffic crashes and disabled vehicles and received a total of 4,605 calls for service. During the height of the storm, state police were fielding 155 calls for service an hour.

— Big thanks to all the first responders (both public servants and private sector partners) for their diligent hard work around the clock. Particular thanks to General Chip Long and the 630 Virginia National Guard personnel for stepping up in a big way.

— Yesterday, President Obama issued a federal emergency declaration, which will allow more resources to be sent to Virginia soon.

— Gov. McDonnell earlier already issued an oral declaration of emergency but today, he is issuing the written version. In it, he will extend the deadlines for numerous government licensing/fee issues that would have expired tomorrow (end of month) to November 9, since the state government was closed for 2 days. Citizens should not feel the need to rush to government offices tomorrow to renew your licenses.

— Voting offices will be opened extra hours to make up for lost times. More details will be provided to each polling location so check with each County.

— State and Federal governments are closed today but they should be open tomorrow as the road conditions improve.

— Finally, big thanks to every Virginian who listened to warnings and remained home or indoors. You helped reduce the problems for first responders.

Gallup: Unemployment Down to 7.1%, Economic Confidence Highest Since 2008

0

I’m not sure what to make of Gallup’s polling on the presidential race (I definitely think they’re off base in their likely voter model), but generally speaking their economic survey numbers have been reasonable (see the graph at the right, compare to BLS numbers, and decide for yourself). Certainly, if nothing else, the trend lines have been consistent – down, from about 9.1% in January 2011 to under 8.0% (seasonally adjusted) in September 2012.

Now, with one more BLS report scheduled for release prior to next Tuesday’s election, Gallup’s showing a 7.1% unemployment rate (not seasonally adjusted), the lowest since Gallup started daily tracking of unemployment in January 2011. Comparing apples to apples, Gallup’s non-seasonally-adjusted unemployment percentage was at  7.9% at the end of September. As of yesterday, again, it was at 7.1%, a drop of 0.8 percentage points in just a few weeks. If – and it’s a big if – the BLS numbers track the Gallup numbers, the implication is that there could be a significant drop in the official unemployment rate (although of course BLS seasonally adjusts its numbers, so that complicates matters). Anyway, we’ll see, and I hate to get hopes up, but if Gallup’s at all on target, then the trend in the unemployment rate over the past month has been downwards – and not by an insignificant amount, either!

Meanwhile, as if that’s not good enough news, Gallup is reporting this morning that their economic confidence index is now at its “highest level…since Gallup began Daily tracking of economic confidence in 2008.”

Finally, one last piece of good economic news: U.S. home prices rose “in August in nearly all U.S. cities, and many of the markets hit hardest during the crisis are starting to show sustained gains. The increases are the latest evidence of a steady housing recovery.”

So remind me, with all this positive economic news (note: I haven’t even mentioned the fact that the stock markets have approximately doubled since they crashed starting in late 2008), why on earth would we switch from President Obama’s leadership and go back to the irresponsible policies that helped get us into the mess in the first place?!?

P.S. Just to put the unemployment numbers in perspective, according to BLS, the rate was 7.8% in January 2009, when President Obama took over (late in the month). Given that it takes a few months AT BEST for a new president’s policies to be passed and start kicking in, and given that we were shedding jobs fast as the economy melted down starting in late 2008 (when Bush was still president), I think it’s fair to start counting Obama’s record with regard to unemployment in mid 2009 (9.5% rate in June-July of that year).

Mudcat: GOTV will Let Obama, Kaine Prevail in Virginia

10

I caught Mudcat being interviewed this morning on MSNBC by Chuck Todd.

The entire interview was not particularly interesting. Todd is a generic television political analyst who tends to base his reporting on the conventional wisdom, occasionally channeling the analysis of the last political operative to plant an idea in his brain (lately, he seems to have developed a good source in the Romney camp, based on his reporting). Both of those skills were on display for the majority of his chat with Mudcat. Meh.

Mudcat did explain that he did not see the Commonwealth as a “purple” state, but rather still as a “red” state, based on the makeup of the General Assembly. At a local state level, he is without doubt correct (and it must look extremely red from his perch down there in Roanoke), but thanks to continuing demographic changes and a growing urban population, particularly in NOVA, the picture is not quite as clear on a statewide basis. It is now possible for Democrats to statewide elections without attracting significant numbers of “independents” to its side.

Indeed, at the very end of the interview, Todd asked about the whether Democrats could offset losing that “independent” vote in the Commonwealth (which Todd sited in the Southern D.C. suburbs, the Northern Neck, and the more rural areas of Hampton Roads), and Mudcat had an interesting response:

There’s something else at work here in Virginia that people don’t talk about. The best GOTV guy in the history of the Commonwealth is Mike Henry, and he’s out there working with Tim Kaine. And I can promise you they are out there. And you’ve got a double GOTV effort going on between Obama and Kaine. And I think they will prevail.

Yep. That’s Mudcat, saying the Democrats will win by turning out Democrats, not by attracting conservatives — er, independents, to their side.

(The full interview can be seen here.)

Richest Members of Congress

1

Once again,CQ Roll Call has identified the richest members of Congress, as summarized in a slideshow at Huffington Post.  And Virginia’s own Mark Warner is No 4, whose net worth at about $85.8 million, makes him even richer than Jay Rockefeller of the famed Rockefeller clan.

Here they are:

1. Rep. Michael McCaul, R-TX

2. Sen. John Kerry, D-MA

3. Rep. Darrell Issa, R-CA

4. Sen. Mark Warner, D-VA

5. Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-WV

6. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-NY

7. Rep. Jared Polis, D-CO

8. Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-NJ

9. Sen. Diane Feinstein, D-CA

10. Rep Jim Renacci, R-OH

It is worth keeping this in mind as the various players work their agenda’s on Capitol Hill, particularly when matters of the economy, taxation, and the safety net are up for discussion.
