Final Maps for VA House of Delegates, State Senate Have *Lots* of Incumbents Paired/Tripled Up.

This could spur a slew of moves, retirements and/or primaries...

Courtesy of VPAP, here’s some analysis of final maps for Virginia House of Delegates and State Senate districts, including number of incumbents per district (note that some of the paired incumbents presumably will retire or move, while in other cases there will be primaries) and how voters shifted from current districts.  For the House of Delegates, here are a few highlights:

  • A total of 42 delegates (or delegates-elect) out of 100 are paired or tripled up.
  • HD6 has Delegates Kathleen Murphy (D) and Rip Sullivan (D) paired up. Of the voting age population, 38,947 come from Del. Murphy’s current district, while just 19,140 come from Del. Sullivan’s current district.
  • HD10 has Delegates Dan Helmer (D) and David Bulova (D) paired up. Of the voting age population, 41,035 come from Del. Helmer’s current district, while just 13,202 come from Del. Bulova’s current district.
  • HD13 has Delegates Kaye Kory (D) and Marcus Simon (D) paired up. Of the voting age population, 51,512 come from Del. Simon’s current district, while just 13,717 come from Del. Kory’s current district.
  • HD18 has Delegates Eileen Filler-Corn (D) and Kathy Tran (D) paired up. Of the voting age population, 30,529 come from Del. Tran’s current district, while just 3,237 come from Del. Filler-Corn’s current district (and 30,834 from Del. Vivian Watts’ current district, plus 2,513 from Del. Mark Sickles’ current district)
  • HD24 has Delegates Elizabeth Guzman (D) and Luke Torian (D) paired up. Of the voting age population, 39,614 come from Del. Guzman’s current district, while 22,757 come from Del. Torian’s current district.
  • HD30 has Delegate Dave LaRock (R) and Michael Webert (R) paired up. Of the voting age population, 36,760 come from Del. LaRock’s current district, while just 8,645 come from Del. Webert’s current district.
  • HD36 has Delegates John Avoli (R) and Ronnie Campbell (R) paired up. Of the voting age population, 50,743 come from Del. Avoli’s current district, while just 18,122 come from Del. Campbell’s current district.
  • HD37 has Delegates Terry Austin (R) and Christopher Head (R) paired up. Of the voting age population, 40,204 come from Del. Austin’s current district, while just 3,660 come from Del. Head’s (plus 22,923 from Del. Ronnie Campbell’s current district)
  • HD44 has Delegates Israel O’Quinn (R) and Will Wampler (R) paired up. Of the voting age population, 35,931 come from Del. O’Quinn’s current district, while 35,079 come from Del. Wampler’s current district.
  • HD47 has Delegates-elect Wren Williams (R) and Marie March (R) paired up. Of the voting age population, 23,947  come from Williams’ district, while just 12,402 come from ‘ March’s district (plus 23,710 from Del. Ronnie Campbell’s current district).
  • HD49 has Delegates James Edmunds (R) and Danny Marshall (R) paired up. Of the voting age population, 44,145 come from Del. Marshall’s current district, while just 17,280 come from Del. Edmunds’ current district.
  • HD60 has Delegates Buddy Fowler (R) and Scott Wyatt (R) paired up. Of the voting age population, 50,580 come from Del. Wyatt’s current district, while just 15,539 come from Del. Fowler’s current district.
  • HD67 has Delegates Bobby Orrock (R) and Margaret Ransone (R) paired up. Of the voting age population, 66,766 come from Del. Ransone’s current district, while just 2,002 come from Del. Orrock’s current district.
  • HD78 has Delegates Dawn Adams (D), Jeff Bourne (D) and Betsy Carr (D) tripled up. Of the voting age population, 32,460 come from Del. Adams’ current district, while 30,739 come from Del. Bourne’s current district, and just 14,668 from Del. Carr’s current district.
  • HD80 has Delegates Lamont Bagby (D) and Schuyler VanValkenburg (D) paired up. Of the voting age population, 38,903 come from Del. Bagby’s current district, while just 20,477 come from Del. VanValkenburg’s current district (plus 8,842 from Del. Rodney Willett’s current district).
  • HD87 has Delegate Jeion Ward (D) and Delegate-elect AC Cordoza paired up. Of the voting age population, 60,830 come from Del. Ward’s current district, while just 9,235 come from Cordoza’s district. Also note that the new HD87 went 73.8% for Clinton in 2016.
  • HD88 has Delegate Don Scott (D) and Delegate-elect Nadarius Clark (D) paired up. Of the voting age population
  • HD90 has Delegates Cliff Hayes (D) and Jay Leftwich (R) paired up. Of the voting age population, 48,448 come from Del. Leftwich’s current district, while just 11,526 come from Del. Hayes’ current district. Also note that the new HD90 went 60.8% for Trump in 2016.
  • HD98 has Delegates Glenn Davis (R), Barry Knight (R) and Kelly Fowler (D) tripled up. Of the voting age population, 33,696 come from Del. Davis’ current district, while 27,707 come from Del. Knight’s current district. Also note that the new HD98 went 58.1% for Trump in 2016.
  • HD100 has Delegate Rob Bloxom (R) and Delegate-elect Tim Anderson (R) paired up. Of the voting age population, 36,929 come from Del. Bloxom’s current district, with 30,534 coming from Delegate-elect Anderson’s district.

And for the State Senate, here are a few highlights:

  • A total of 20 out of 40 State Senators are paired or tripled up.
  • SD2: Senators Creigh Deeds (D), Mark Obenshain (R) and Emmett Hanger (R) are tripled up. Of the voting age population, 95,971 come from Sen. Obenshain’s current district, while 69,847 come from Sen. Hanger’s current district and just 5,415 from Sen. Deeds’ current district. Also note that the new SD2 went 63.7% for Trump in 2016.
  • SD4: Senators John Edwards (D) and Dave Suetterlein (R) are paired up. Of the voting age population, 103,422 come from Sen. Edwards’ current district vs. 71,019 from Sen. Suetterlein’s current district. Also note that the new SD4 went 50.1% for Trump in 2016.
  • SD8: Senators Steve Newman (R) and Mark Peake (R) are paired up. Of the voting age population, 126,992 come from Sen. Newman’s current district, while just 33,037 come from Sen. Peake’s current district.
  • SD12: Senators Amanda Chase (R) and Ghazala Hashmi (D) are paired up. Of the voting age population, 89,107 come from Sen. Chase’s current district vs. 66,338 from Sen. Hashmi’s current district. Also note that the new SD12 went 53.1% for Trump in 2016.
  • SD18: Senators Louise Lucas (D) and Lionell Spruill (D) are paired up. Of the voting age population, 70,793 come from Sen. Lucas’ current district vs. 60,962 from Sen. Spruill’s current district (plus 30,325 from Sen. John Cosgrove’s current district)
  • SD20: Senators Bill DeSteph (R), Jen Kiggans (R) and Lynwood Lewis (D) are tripled up. Of the voting age population, 63,208 come from Sen. DeSteph’s current district, while 57,606 come from Sen. Lewis’ current district and 53,453 come from Sen. Kiggans’ current district. Also note that the new SD20 went 51.7% for Trump in 2016.
  • SD26: Senators Ryan McDougle (R) and Tommy Norment (R) are paired up.  Of the voting age population, 97,224 come from Sen. Norment’s current district, while just 54,922 come from Sen. McDougle’s curent district.
  • SD35: Senators Dave Marsden (D) and Dick Saslaw (D) are paired up. Of the voting age population, 57,076 come from Sen. Saslaw’s current district, while 52,252 come from Sen. Marsden’s current district (plus 42,050 from Sen. Chap Petersen’s current district  and 17,618 from Sen. George Barker‘s current district).
  • SD38: Senators Janet Howell (D) and Jennifer Boysko (D) are paired up. Of the voting age population, 77,937 come from Sen. Howell’s current district, while just 41,733 come from Sen. Boysko’s current district (plus 46,231 from Sen. Barbara Favola‘s current district).
