Virginia Sheriffs Endorse Anthony Flaccavento

0

Join diverse coalition backing Flaccavento for Congress

ABINGDON, Va., Nov. 1, 2012 – Anthony Flaccavento, candidate for Congress from Virginia’s Ninth District, today received endorsements from two Virginia Sheriffs and Bristol firefighters, who joined a growing group of people and organizations in support of Flaccavento for Congress.

The sheriffs endorsed Mr. Flaccavento’s candidacy after learning of his proposal to pay deputies and other first responders a fair wage.

“Anthony Flaccavento stands with working men and women,” said Washington County Sheriff Fred Newman. “I know he’ll support me and my deputies in Congress, so we support him. Congressman Griffith says he doesn’t care about low pay for deputies, and that states should take care of it. I wish he had felt that way when he ran the General Assembly. I strongly endorse Anthony Flaccavento for Congress.”

Russell County Sheriff Steve Dye joined Newman in endorsing Flaccavento, as did the International Association of Firefighters local in Bristol.

“I’m honored to accept the endorsements of men and women who put themselves in harm’s way to protect us every day,” said Mr. Flaccavento. “I have always stood with the people who make America great: coal miners, farmers, loggers, steel workers, firefighters, sheriff’s deputies… These are the working men and women we need to support in order to continue to build strong local economies from the bottom up in southwest Virginia.”

Mr. Flaccavento has received endorsements from dozens of elected officials from all across southwest Virginia and at all levels of government, including Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.). His history of support for middle-class and working-class families has earned him endorsements from 10 labor organizations, including the United Mine Workers of America, the Communications Workers of America and the United Steelworkers. Flaccavento also recently earned an endorsement from the Alliance for Retired Americans, which cited his “leadership on issues such as preserving and protecting Social Security and Medicare.”

Mr. Flaccavento was also recently endorsed by the Roanoke Times, which wrote, “If coal is to be the defining issue of this campaign, Anthony Flaccavento is the clear choice. Coal companies have no greater friend on Capitol Hill than first-term incumbent Rep. Morgan Griffith. Coal miners and their families could have no greater friend than challenger Flaccavento … Flaccavento demonstrates a thoughtful command of the issues that is unusual in a first-time candidate. On issue after issue, from health care reform to the deficit to taxes, he frames solutions in terms of what would most benefit the people of his district. That is a view that has been missing for the last two years under the tea partyer from Salem.”

“We’ve built a broad coalition, a winning coalition,” said Mr. Flaccavento. “We continue to gain momentum. But even more important than these groups and elected officials are the people who talk to me on the campaign trail. They share my commitment to creating strong local economies. This campaign has always been about building from the bottom up, and that’s how we’re going to win on Tuesday – people power.”

The full list of endorsements Mr. Flaccavento has received is available at bit.ly/endorseAF.

Anthony Flaccavento is a candidate for Congress from Virginia’s Ninth District. He is a family farmer and small business owner from Abingdon, in the heart of the district. Anthony has spent the last three decades working to promote economic development and sustainable farming practices in southwest Virginia. Please visit www.afor9.com for more information.

Posturing, Polls, and the October Surprise

0

121102ElectoralMapBarring any unforeseen event, there aren’t enough undecideds to sway these uncertain elections. Persuasion is over now. The embers are being fanned with advertising dollars, but the electorate is now fairly immune to the heat from either side. The negative ads won’t do the heavy work of GOTV.

The tea leaves from the polls give a very murky outlook. Republicans told us weeks ago that the polls are unreliable and biased. They were certainly not giving the news that they wanted to hear. For a while they were apoplectic; then curled up in the fetal position. When the polls swung their way, they suddenly became prophetic. But the truth is we (except maybe Nate Silver) won’t know what they mean until midnight Tuesday.

The benefit of the ad deluge right now is nearly zero compared to ads run in June or July. Dr. Quentin Kidd (Christopher Newport University) suggests that was factored into the strategy of the Obama campaign. The campaign had ads up at that point in all the swing states because they wanted to set the stage early. Everyone knew that by fall the ads would be ubiquitous to the point of being indistinguishable. This strategy may prove the difference in this race.

In a conversation with Cathy Lewis on WHRV last week, Kidd concurred with the view that we have reached the point of political ad saturation. But, he said, we are in an arms race from which no campaign can pull back without demonstrating some sort of weakness; suggesting maybe the financial support has gone (see George Allen’s contribution to himself). And just today a very expensive 20 page, glossy, Obama mailer arrived from OFA.

The differences between the polls this year are generally within the margins of error. What makes those differences? Republicans and their talk radio rationalists point to a liberal media or polling bias, but there are more practical matters that influence the results.

Polls are supposed to harvest essentially random input. But part of that is a function of who picks up the phone and that is constantly changing. It is influenced by the time of day the calls are made and who would be home at those times to answer (or choose not to answer). Another change to the process of polling is the transition from land lines to cell phones. There are regulations affecting the choice of user. Regulations make calling land lines much easier: automated machines can make these calls; not so with cell phones. That means a human must dial the area code and number, increasing costs significantly.

Let’s think about that. The number of people using cell phones is growing and that number skews younger than the land line users. In fact there may be a demographic segment that is simply not included in the polls. And the internet is an imperfect alternative for many reasons.

Dr. Kidd says that phones will continue to be used for the foreseeable future but that there will be a shift to cell phones over time. Currently he uses a 75/25 split land line to cell phone and 10 to 12 percent of the cell phone users are cell phone only users. That, according to Kidd, characterizes is the state of the art for now. Cell phone users are younger, more mobile; meaning a land line sample is older and less mobile.

All this makes the poll results hazier. So interpreting them is a fine art and requires a more thorough analysis of the run-up to the election. The ad saturation effect here at the end of the campaign is likely good for democracy. It makes it less likely that voters will use these 30 to 60 second sound bites as the basis for a decision on which way to vote. But it is somewhat disturbing that so many in the cell phone sample set are using the Daily Show and the Colbert Report as a primary source of information; or is it?

“There is some research on the effects of the(se) shows, the Daily Show in particular, on political knowledge and demonstrates that political knowledge is improved by watching those shows. So, that’s a commentary on our news programs; if you can watch a comedy program and your political knowledge is higher.

“But the question is: Why? I think what you just pointed out: Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert take a very critical look at everything. And I think what comes out the other end of that critical look is a better sense of what is reality. And I think that is why some people find them, in some ways, more beneficial to understanding what is really going on.” – Dr. Quentin Kidd, Department Chair, Christopher Newport University

Interpret that as you may. The potentially underreported demographic is getting its news from Stewart and Colbert.

Finally, the October surprise the bloviating talk show hosts predicted would be a cynical Obama maneuver to allow him to “look Presidential” instead became something more of what they might interpret providential. Sandy, very likely powered by the immoral environmental stewardship Republicans have come to call “free market forces,” set the stage for Obama’s very competent Presidential performance.

So the election is really already all over except the GOTV. There is nothing more important than this GOTV effort for the President and for Tim Kaine in Virginia; down to the last identified strong D.

But there is the undercurrent of another campaign being waged: the continued campaign to delegitimatize President Obama. This one works both ways for Republicans. Win or lose, it accelerates a retrenchment to the past or it puts the brakes on progress. That could mean a pyrrhic victory for our President.

The Berra adage must be adapted for Obama’s next 4 years: It isn’t over even when it’s over.

Revealed: New True the Vote documents show organization misleading poll watchers

Virginia’s nonpartisan Election Protection Coalition calls on officials to ensure ill-trained poll watchers don’t block eligible voters

ATTACHED: Please find attached a copy of the coalition’s letter to authorities. A copy of the True the Vote Virginia training manual is available at http://www.progressva.org/TTV-…

Virginia’s nonpartisan Election Protection Coalition today released new training materials obtained from Texas-based True the Vote that reveal the organization has been misleading Virginia volunteers on state election law and voting procedures. In a letter to officials including Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, the State Board of Elections, and Virginia’s US Attorneys, the coalition expressed concern that, “Virginia poll watchers that rely on the erroneous “training” in True the Vote’s boilerplate poll watcher manual pose a grave risk of fostering an environment of confusion, hostility and intimidation. Worse, these ill-trained poll watchers could intentionally or inadvertently make it harder for Virginians to vote, especially new voters, voters of color, voters who need language assistance, and voters with physical disabilities.”

The coalition found numerous serious inaccuracies and misleading statements in the True the Vote Poll Watcher manual, including erroneous statements on ID and signature requirements, misstatements of Virginia’s procedure for challenging voters, and incorrect information about the balloting procedure for voters who are in line when the polls close at 7pm. Multiple contradictory statements between “general” information and Virginia-specific rules only increases the probability that poll watchers relying on the manual on election day will foster an environment of confusion, hostility, and intimidation.

“The training materials released by True the Vote for Virginia volunteers are part of a widespread effort that could lead to longer lines at the polls, or worse, turn away eligible voters,” said Courtney Mills, staff attorney for the Fair Elections Legal Network. “The State Board of Elections and all County Boards of Election should direct election officers to use their power to ensure the election runs smoothly and all eligible voters that want to cast a ballot can vote. Election officials and both political parties should take steps to ensure workers and volunteers do not prevent voters from their civic duty to vote.”

“Every eligible voter should be assured that they can cast a ballot that counts,” commented Anna Scholl, Executive Director of ProgressVA Education Fund. “No poll watcher who has been trained with false or misleading information should stand in the way of voters exercising their constitutional rights.”

“Voters who have questions about voting or think their constitutional rights have been violated should call the nonpartisan election protection hotline at 1-866-OUR-VOTE,” said Dara Lindenbaum, associate counsel with the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

The coalition reminds election officers that under Virginia code 24.2-604, they have the authority to remove persons, including poll watchers, who are disturbing, disrupting, or delaying the voting process. Poll watchers who are intimidating voters or impeding the voting process based on the erroneous information contained in the True the Vote manual can and should be removed from the polls.

Virginia’s nonpartisan Election Protection Coalition was formed to ensure all voters have an equal opportunity to participate in the political process. BLS Issues Strong Jobs Report With 4 Days to Go Until Election

3

Nice

Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 171,000 in October, and the unemployment rate was essentially unchanged at 7.9 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Employment rose in professional and business services, health care, and retail trade.

[…]

The change in total nonfarm payroll employment for August was revised from +142,000 to +192,000, and the change for September was revised from +114,000 to +148,000.

Adding the revisions for August and September plus the 171,000 jobs created in October, that’s 255,000 new jobs. Also good news: the labor force participation rate is up to 63.8%, with 578,000 more people in the labor force. Clearly, the economic recovery is continuing, in spite of relentless Republican efforts to derail it. Let’s keep it going for 4 more years under President Obama’s leadership!

P.S. Michael Tackett of Bloomberg News tweets, “Jobless rate ticks up bc 580K people joined the labor force… 410K of them found jobs.” Also, economist Justin Wolfers tweets, “The employment-to-populate ratio is up a staggering 0.5 percentage points since August. Unemployment is falling for the right reasons.” Brad DeLong writes, “Adding in 171K of September-October employment growth to 84K of upward revisions, we know think that the U.S. economy in October had 255K more jobs on a seasonally-adjusted bases than we yesterday that it had employed in September. That is a noticeably stronger economy, and that is very nice to see. The “2” in the hundred-thousands place makes me very happy…”

Virginia News Headlines: Friday Morning

5

Here are a few Virginia (and national) news headlines, political and otherwise, for Friday, November 2. Just 4 days to go, what are YOU doing to help reelect Barack Obama, to keep a Democratic Senate, and to take back the House?!?

*Vote no on Question 1 in Virginia (“This staggering act of corporate welfare – as proposed in Question 1 on the ballot Virginia voters will cast Nov. 6 – would go far beyond current law in any other state. Virginians should vote no on Question 1.”)

*Bloomberg: A Vote for a President to Lead on Climate Change

*Robinson: Will Sandy be a climate wake-up call? (The bigger question is when lawmakers are going to get out of bed with Big Oil and other fossil fuel interests and work to protect our planet, the only one we’ve got.)

*Allen on $500k campaign loan and U.S. 460 tolls (“The prevailing meme Thursday in Virginia’s competitive U.S. Senate tilt was that Republican nominee George Allen’s campaign is financially shaky because he guaranteed a $500,000 loan to support its operation.”)

*Virginia Senate race: Why Tim Kaine, George Allen vie for bipartisan mantle

*In Caroline, Romney makes appeal to Virginia voters (And Romney adds yet ANOTHER lie to his repertoire!)

*Hot Race for Virginia Senate Seat: Tim Kaine vs. George Allen (“So far, shadow money groups and super PACs, as well as the National Republican Senatorial Committee, have spent $24.4 million attacking Kaine. On the other side, only $15 million has been spent attacking Allen”)

*Senator Mark Warner Speaks out on Sandy Response (“Warner said he was proud of President Obama’s leadership in the wake of the storm; siting a bi-partisan effort, working with New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, to make sure adequate relief was received.”)

*Warner, McDonnell lend a hand to Senate candidates; Allen loans campaign $500K for last push

*Warner, Kaine rally Charlottesville supporters

*Our view: Kaine for Senate (Allen “does not have the skills needed to reach across the aisle to solve problems and his temperament would create more divisions than solutions.”)

*Court decision gives Dominion customers an electric bill break

*Court says APCo can recover $6M

*Kaine campaign pulls into Lynchburg

*McDonnell family beach houses burglarized

*A look at the Virginia Senate candidates’ records as governor

*Wilder backs Kaine in U.S. Senate race (That’s great I guess, but does anyone give a crap what Doug Wilder thinks about anything anymore? I sure don’t; the guy’s a complete egomaniac. I’ll never forget how much we had to kiss his butt in 2006 to get his endorsement for Jim Webb. What a jerk.)

*Sharp contrast in 6th District race

*Powell says Cantor bet against economy; but Cantor bet a lot more on it succeeding

*Romney rallies in Va. Beach in final push for key state

*In McLean, Va., a microcosm of election-year America

*Fairfax Democrats sue over rules for observers at polling places

*Feds: Corruption rife at Dulles Rail board (I’ve been saying this for years, the place is a cesspool, filled with no-bid contracts, sweetheart deals, nepotism, etc. Now people are shocked that it’s all coming out? Whatever.)

The Choice: It’s an Easy and Obvious One (Part One)

0

The choice this election is an easy one.  It all boils down to whether you believe in the idea that 1) we are all in this together or b) you believe in every person for himself. If you believe we are all in this together, then you should support President Barack Obama.  If you believe in on-your-ownership, then the other side  has the guy for you, Mitt Romney.

Mitt Romney is the candidate of on-your-ownership health care, Medicare, Social Security, student loans, home loans and more. He doesn’t support a minimum wage. He pretends he never got any help or legacy from his wealthy and famous father.  That itself is a lie, but his pretense otherwise feeds the mythology that Mitt is a self-made man. He isn’t.

Over and over Mitt Romney has told us he doesn’t believe in community response. He doesn’t believe in FEMA (though now his campaign desperately pretends he does). He doesn’t believe in Homeland Security (only Department of “Defense,” which is to say euphemistically, war). Mitt Romney would abolish nearly all of the federal government except the department of war. And you can bet his sons will not serve in the wars he has planned.  They served in their church missions, after all.

Mitt doesn’t even believe in real charity. He and his wife keep talking about their “huge” donation to the Church of LDS. It turns out that the church doesn’t get all that much from Mitt’s various tax avoidance “charity.” But Mitt gets an income and tax deductions along with the money growing tax-deferred anyway.

President Obama is not only the better choice for the 99%, he is the only one who gets that government is necessary to meet needs citizens alone cannot fill. The nation’s infrastructure depends upon a federal paradigm. But in Mittworld, highways, even those built with public money’s, would be sold off for a song to privateers who could charge whatever they want for us to drive down the highway. Mitt doesn’t even believe in (local) publicly employed police and fire departments. And he has publicly opposed any increase in their hire, via the stimulus. He said we don’t need any more of them! For him it’s everyone for himself and God help us all.

While Mitt Romney opposes more hiring of police and fire personnel, President Obama gets that the resources of our government are most importantly used when our fellow citizens are in crisis. It is the very essence of defense and homeland security. You and I were inspired this week when we saw President Obama and Chris Christie working together to solve storm-related problems. These two leaders understand what Mitt and his supporters do not, we are all in this together. If the Northeast is struggling, so too is America. If the South or Southwest suffers, so too does all of America. There is only the United States of America, not the on-your-ownership America. In Bush and Mittworld we have seen how that would play out.  And it would be a horrendous future for an America which will be much brighter if we realize we are one.  As the hymn goes, “We would be one.”

TIM KAINE, MARK WARNER CAMPAIGN ACROSS VIRGINIA IN BEGINNING OF FINAL STRETCH

Richmond, VA – Today, former governor and U.S. Senate candidate Tim Kaine was joined on the campaign trail by U.S. Senator Mark Warner for a series of events highlighting Kaine’s economic strategies including leveling the playing field for small businesses and investing in education, workforce development, and infrastructure. They also thanked some of the thousands of grassroots volunteers who are working hard to elect Kaine on Tuesday.

Kaine began the day at Alexandria Seaport Foundation, a nonprofit that uses boatbuilding to teach technical and leadership skills to at-risk youth. While serving as a missionary in Honduras, Kaine worked as principal of a technical school teaching young people skills they could use to better their lives.

“I’ve seen firsthand how teaching students career skills increases their economic opportunities.  A skilled, prepared workforce contributes to a stronger economy here in Virginia and helps our nation compete in an increasingly global and dynamic economy,” Kaine said. “Whether it's at the school where I taught in Honduras as a missionary or at this workshop in Alexandria, teaching kids the skills they need to fill engineering jobs or carpentry jobs is critical to the growth of our economy.”

Senator Mark Warner joined Kaine in Harrisonburg, where they led an employee town hall of more than 100 participants at Rosetta Stone. Kaine and Warner have known each other for more than 30 years. During the discussion, Kaine shared his views on how to create jobs for Virginians in an ever-changing economy.

“Everything about Tim Kaine's life and career has been about service. He's a good guy who will roll up his sleeves in Washington and do his job for the right reasons,” said Warner. “With all the issues we face right now, we need people up there like Tim who will be bridge builders and fixers, not just tear others down.”

“Small businesses and their owners remain the innovators and backbone of our economy.  In order for them to succeed though, we must develop a talented workforce that can fill the jobs of tomorrow and increase their connection with global markets by improving and expanding our infrastructure,” Kaine said.

Later in the day, Kaine and Warner stopped in Charlottesville to rally more than 125 voters at the local OFA office on the Downtown Mall to thank them for their grassroots activism and support. They then traveled to Lynchburg for an event outside historic Kemper Street Station where Kaine spoke about the importance of infrastructure investments in creating jobs and positioning the Commonwealth for success.

“As Governor I understood that investing in our infrastructure – like roads and rail – created jobs in the short term and then raise the platform for economic success in the long term,” Kaine said.  “The extension of Amtrak service to Lynchburg, which was championed by a bipartisan coalition of legislators, has been a great tool for economic development for businesses in this area. Projects like this, or extending service to Roanoke, or other projects across the country, will strengthen our national economy if Congress is willing to act.”

Finally, Kaine and Warner ended the day with a pair of events to thank grassroots supporters in Lynchburg and Roanoke.

“The work you do, the doors you knock on, and the phone calls you make, are critical, not only to our success on Election Day, but to the future of our country.  We need you to continue that person to person contact through November 6th and we’ll show America that the power of grassroots support is much greater than that of secret outside money and attack ads,” Kaine said.

With just five days left before Election Day, Kaine will continue his travels across Virginia talking to voters about his vision and strategy to create jobs and move us forward.

Video: Interviews With Romney Supporters Are Seriously…Disturbing

13

Wow. These are actual Romney supporters? I mean, they’re just (pick one or more adjectives): a) hateful; b) bigoted; c) nuts; d) clueless; e) brain dead; f) ignorant; g) rabid. It’s astounding, but there are tens of millions of people like this in our country. Sometimes I wonder how we ever make any progress at all. Ugh, I feel like I need a long, hot shower. More to the point, we can NOT let these people win; can you imagine what they’d do to this country? So do whatever you can possibly do in the next 4 days to elect Democrats across the board. Thanks.

P.S. Great job as always by New Left Media! How they can stand being in the presence of people like this and also keep their cool is beyond me….
