Douglass for Congress Campaign Donates $4,600 to “Keep the Ban” Anti-Uranium-Mining Group

1

The John Douglass for Congress campaign has issued a statement (see below) on this story, which points out that Douglass, who has relentlessly (and correctly!) criticized Rep. Robert Hurt (pictured at right, looking like he’s drinking uranium tailings or something – heh) for his massive conflict of interest regarding uranium mining in the district, “received $4,250 in campaign donations from executives with United States Enrichment Corp. from October 2011 through September 2012.”

General Douglass’s campaign is putting our money where our mouth is to stop dangerous uranium mining in Virginia by donating $4,600 to a leading “Keep the Ban” charitable organization, an amount equivalent to contributions from Douglass’s former Navy colleagues who happen to work with US Enrichment Corp. Now if Corporate Congressman Hurt is serious about this issue, it’s time for him to categorically oppose uranium mining near residential communities, support a federal ban in Congress and give up his campaign contributions from Virginia Uranium investors — and while he’s at it, give up his $14,000 from Goldman Sachs, “a major proponent of privatizing social security.”

Of course, Hurt is NOT serious about this issue, certainly not in the sense that he’s “serious” about protecting the people of his district, the environment, or anything but his own corporate buddies and bottom line. Meanwhile, John Douglass did exactly the right thing, and deserves applause for doing so. Quite a contrast with empty suit/corporate crony Robert Hurt!

“O Cantor, Where Art Thou?” Notes from the Road: Mineral

0

We just finished our third stop on the “O Cantor, Where Art Thou?” Tour, and we’re ready for more! We just pulled out of the Walton Park in the great town of Mineral, Virginia.

Refreshments were provided by the Louisa Democratic Committee. Any extra energy was provided by Dr. Ralph Stanley and his Clinch Mountain Boys. And they produced that in abundance!

The boys put on quite a show on that old-fashioned, wooden stage, surprising the folks with an impromptu performance of the fan-favorite “Man of Constant Sorrow.” Wayne’s spirited speech brought the whole event home, hitting Cantor hard for his refusal to help the people of Louisa following the earthquake that damaged local schools and businesses.

We’re more than halfway done with the tour, and we couldn’t be happier with the outcome. This tour is, and always has been, about you, the People of the 7th District. We answer to you and no one else.

We’re currently on the road to Goochland. See you there!

ProgressVA Responds to SBE Vote to Request Attorney General Investigation Voter Registration Fraud by Republican Party Contractor
ProgressVA questions AG Cuccinelli's ability to impartially investigate party while seeking their gubernatorial nomination

Richmond, VA – ProgressVA today reacted to the decision by the State Board of Elections to request Attorney General Cuccinelli open an investigation into alleged voter registration fraud committed by a Republican Party of Virginia contractor. ProgressVA released the following statement from Executive Director Anna Scholl
“We applaud the State Board of Elections for taking the integrity of our elections seriously. Unfortunately, the legal recourses available to the Board are simply inadequate. Attorney General Cuccinelli has a long and sordid history of manipulating the law and his office in pursuit of his personal political agenda. We have zero confidence that the man seeking the Republican gubernatorial nomination could simultaneously conduct an impartial, thorough and transparent investigation of that party. That's why the ProgressVA community has called on the federal Justice Department to investigate the extent of this fraud, a call that has been echoed by Congressmen Jim Moran, Gerry Connolly, Bobby Scott, and State Senator Donald McEachin.”
BACKGROUND:

  • On September 27th, 2012, the Republican Party of Virginia terminated a voter registration contract with Strategic Allied Consulting, a firm run by Republican operative Nathan Sproul. [WTVR, 9/27/12]
  • Spoul has claimed that the Republican National Committee asked him to form SAC, in part to hide his past history of voter suppression work. [Los Angeles Times, 9/28/12]
  • According to multiple sources, including McClatchy, Sproul formed Issue Advocacy Partners in April and has continued to work for Republican parties under that firm. Screenshots show the websites for Strategic Allied Consulting and Issue Advocacy Partners to be virtually identical. On October 1st, days after the Republican Party of Virginia fired Strategic Allied Consulting, Issue Advocacy Partners began advertising for canvassers to conduct “conservative voter identification.” [McClatchy, 10/13/12]

  • A spokesman for the RNC “said that after the RNC and the Republican Party of Virginia severed their relationships with Strategic Allied Consulting, the state party continued to use some of the firm's same workers, including Small, by paying them through Pinpoint.” [NBC News,10/19/12]
  • Rockingham County Sheriff arrested Colin Smart and charged him with destroying voter registration forms. Smart was previously employed by Strategic Allied Consulting. [NBC News, 10/19/12]

Video: Bill Clinton Says Barack Obama Got It Right, Reelect Him!

2

I love this ad, particularly how Bill Clinton – arguably the most popular politician in America – notes that the same people said the same crazy stuff about him as they’re saying about President Obama, but that under President Clinton, this country prospered (not to mention that we had budget surpluses, which Republicans promptly turned back into massive deficits, just as they always do). My question is, what do Republicans have against America prospering, and leaders who can put policies in place to encourage that? Jealousy, perhaps?

“O Cantor, Where Art Thou?” Notes from the Road: Culpeper

0

The “O Cantor, Where Art Thou?” Tour moves ever onward! We’re hitting the road after a wonderful outside show in downtown Culpeper. Even in this unseasonably hot weather, nearly 150 supporters filled the makeshift amphitheater and waited in anticipation for Wayne Powell to speak and Dr. Ralph Stanley to play.

Dr. Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys did not disappoint. In between stirring renditions of “O Death” and “Amazing Grace”, Dr. Stanley stopped for a moment and asked the crowd to vote for Wayne.

“Will you do that for me?” He asked. The crowd responded by applauding even louder than they had been.

When Wayne took to the microphone, he noticed a lone Eric Cantor supporter, holding a sign that read “Culpeper is Cantor Country.”

“This isn’t Cantor country,” Wayne roared. “This is YOUR country and YOUR district.” The attendees made more noise than they had made all day.

We met a lot of great people and spoke to a lot of dedicated supporters in Culpeper. This campaign is about taking our case to the people, and that’s why we’re on this tour.

Our next stop is in Mineral, so stay tuned!

Seniors Group Endorses Tim Kaine for Senate

Today, the Alliance for Retired Americans proudly endorsed Tim Kaine for U.S. Senate.

“Tim Kaine stands against cuts to Social Security and Medicare, including attempts at privatization and cutting benefits. He has shown us he is committed to maintaining and improving the quality of life for older Americans,” said Barbara J. Easterling, President of the Alliance for Retired Americans and a Virginia resident.

Ron Thompson, President of the Virginia Alliance for Retired Americans said, “Tim Kaine is a friend of seniors. He is the candidate that Virginia retirees can trust to protect their interests. He understands how important programs like Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security are to Virginia – and not only to seniors – to people of all ages.”

Kaine also supports many practical initiatives to provide more affordable health care to older Americans, including allowing the Medicare program to negotiate lower prices for prescription drugs.

The Alliance for Retired Americans represents over 4 million retirees and community activists, including over 53,000 in Virginia.

Don’t let them get away with voter registration fraud in Virginia

2

Last week a contractor for the Republican Party of Virginia was arrested in Harrisonburg and charged with throwing away voter registration forms. Attorney General Cuccinelli, no stranger to using his office for partisan gain, so far has refused to investigate. There’s every reason to believe these violations could be more widespread. The company the contractor worked for has been operating in localities across the Commonwealth. There’s no excuse for not protecting the vote and ensuring the integrity of our elections so we’re asking for help.

Yesterday, Congressmen Jim Moran, Bobby Scott, and Gerry Connolly called on Attorney General Eric Holder and the Department of Justice to investigate. Please join the Democratic Congressmen of Virginia and ProgressVA in calling for federal officials to investigate voter registration fraud in Virginia.

Why do we think the problem could be more widespread? Just last month, RPV fired Strategic Allied Consulting, a firm they had hired to do voter registration, over fraud allegations. But according to news reports, RPV kept paying many of Strategic Allied’s former employees, including the contractor who was arrested in Harrisonburg. It’s clear we can’t trust RPV or Ken Cuccinelli when they say they take election integrity seriously.

We’re asking federal officials to step in because Cuccinelli has refused to investigate his own party. We’re asking two government entities for help: the first is the Department of Justice, which monitors and protects voting rights across the country. The second is Congressman Elijah Cummings, the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee. He’s already initiated an investigation into voter suppression in states across the country and we’re asking him to expand that investigation to include Virginia.

Our elections should be free, fair, and accessible. We need a fair, thorough, and transparent investigation to determine the extent of this problem and ensure Virginians that every eligible voter can cast a ballot. Please take a moment now and add your name to our call for a federal investigation into voter registration fraud in Virginia.

“O Cantor, Where Art Thou?” Notes from the Road: Ashland

The “O Cantor, Where Art Thou?” Barnstorm tour of the 7th Congressional district is well under way. It’s only 11:30 a.m., and what a day we’ve already had!

We kicked off the second day of our tour in Ashland at the Hanover-renowned Ashland Coffee and Tea Company. By showtime, the room was brimming over with 136 guests clamoring for Dr. Ralph Stanley and Wayne Powell.

By the time the bluegrass titan took the stage with his Clinch Mountain Boys, it was clear Dr. Stanley was not only made for spreading the gospel of bluegrass, but for musical campaigning as well.

“Will you vote for this man?” Dr. Stanley asked the capacity crowd, pointing to a seated Wayne Powell. He was met with an overwhelming chorus of cheers and applause.

And once Wayne took the stage, it was clear the room knew exactly which box they were going to check in the voting booth on November 6.

We’re so excited to bring our message of social justice and economic fairness to the people of the 7th District. And an old-fashioned barnstorm is just the way to do it.

Our next stop is in Culpeper. See you then!

Another Polluter Front Group Issues Fake Climate Report

0

The Cato Institute, a former big tobacco front group that now shills for big polluters, is putting out a phony report designed to fool reporters into thinking it’s related to an actual U.S. government climate science report.

It’s not the first time a polluter front group has tried to trick reporters. Back in 2008, the Heartland Institute put out the “NIPCC report,” trying to glom onto the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report.

What’s most bizarre is that Cato and Heartland then go around whining that no one takes them seriously as an authority on climate science.

It would be like me going up on stage in a wig & skinny jeans, calling myself Justin Biemer, and singing “Boyfriend,” then complaining no one took me seriously as an artist.
