[UPDATED 4/6] The Status – Seeking Reelection or Other Office? Retiring? – of All 140 Members of the VA General Assembly

As the 2023 Virginia General Assembly regular session wraps up (mercifully! LOL), and as members make announcements of their future plans, here’s a running list of what the status is for all 140 members. Note that this is based on the best information (at least to my knowledge) that’s currently available, and will be edited as new information comes available. Also note that, unless otherwise stated, we’re talking about NEW districts after redistricting, so it can get kind of confusing (since the numbers and boundaries all changed, since many incumbents were “drawn in” together, etc.). Fun times! LOL

Senators

George L. Barker (D-Fairfax) – Running for reelection in the new SD36, is being primaried by Fairfax County School Board member Stella Pekarsky, who announced her campaign in January 2023
John Bell (D-Loudoun) – Unclear; rumors that he might not run for reelection and that Del. Suhas Subramanyam might run for the seat. [UPDATED 2/25 – hearing that Bell hasn’t decided yet whether or not to retire; UPDATED 3/2 Bell announced he won’t run for reelection, while Subramanyam announced for this seat UPDATED 3/6 – Former Del. Ibraheem Samirah has now announced for this Senate seat]
Jennifer Boysko (D-Fairfax) – Running for reelection in the new SD38 [“drawn in” with Sen. Janet Howell, who is retiring]
Amanda Chase (R-Chesterfield) – Running for reelection in the new SD12, has two Republican primary opponents (Tina Ramirez and Glen Sturtevant)
John Cosgrove, Jr. (R-Isle of Wight/Southampton) – Running for reelection in the new SD19 [UPDATED 3/20: Big surprise here, as Cosgrove announced he’s NOT running for reelection after all!]
R. Creigh Deeds (D-Albemarle/Charlottesville/etc.) – Running for reelection in the new SD11, being primaried by Del. Sally Hudson (she announced last November)
Bill DeSteph (R-VA Beach) – Running for reelection in the new SD20
Siobhan Dunnavant (R-Hanover/Henrico) – Running for reelection in the new SD16, being challenged by Del. Schuyler VanValkenburg (D), who announced last November
Adam Ebbin (D-Arlington) – Running for reelection in the new SD39
John Edwards (D-Roanoke) – Unclear, could run for reelection in the new SD04 against Sen. Dave Suetterlein (R), but rumors are he’s going to retire [UPDATED: Edwards announced on 2/27 that he’s retiring]
Barbara Favola (D-Arlington) – Running for reelection in the new SD40; being primaried by James DeVita (D)
Travis Hackworth (R-Bland/Buchanan/etc.) – Running for reelection in the new SD05
Emmett Hanger, Jr. (R-Augusta) – Uncertain, possibly moving to a different district [UPDATED 4/6: Sen. Hanger announced he’s retiring]
Ghazala Hashmi (D-Chesterfield) – Running for reelection in the new SD15
Janet Howell (D-Fairfax/Arlington) – Hasn’t announced yet [UPDATED: Sen. Howell announced on 2/28 that she will NOT run for reelection, avoiding a primary with Sen. Jennifer Boysko, who was “drawn in” with Howell], but presumed to be retiring along with her friend Dick Saslaw.
Lynwood Lewis, Jr. (D-Eastern Shore) – Presumed to be retiring, given that the district (now the new SD20) got a lot “redder” after redistricting. [UPDATED 3/7: Lewis announced that he’s not running for reelection.]
Mamie Locke (D-Hampton) – Running for reelection in the new SD23
Louise Lucas (D-Chesapeake/Suffolk/etc.) – Running for reelection in the new SD18; Democratic primary opponent is Sen. Lionell Spruill
Dave Marsden (D-Fairfax) – Running for reelection in the new SD35; Democratic primary opponent Heidi Drauschak (announced in January)
Monty Mason (D-Williamsburg) – Running for reelection in the new SD24; faces a tough race against Republican Danny Diggs
Jennifer McClellan (D-Henrico)Elected to the U.S. House on 2/21; Democratic “firehouse primary” this Sunday to choose a nominee (Del. Lamont Bagby, Del. Dawn Adams or Alexsis Rodgers [UPDATE 2/27: Bagby won overwhelmingly] to run for her soon-to-be-vacant seat.
Ryan McDougle (R-Caroline/Essex/Hanover/etc.) – Appears to be running for reelection in the new SD26; possible primary against Sen. Tommy Norment (R) [UPDATE: Norment announced on 2/26 that he is NOT running for reelection – truly the end of an era with Norment’s and Saslaw’s retirements].
Jeremy McPike (D-Prince William) – Running for reelection in the new SD29; Democratic primary vs. Del. Elizabeth Guzman (announced her candidacy in December)
Joe Morrissey (D-Petersburg/Richmond/etc.) – Running for reelection in the new SD13; has two Democratic primary opponents (Lashrecse Aird – announced last March – and Angela Rowe)
Steve Newman (R-Lynchburg) – Not 100% clear; possibly retiring or running for reelection in the new SD08; possible primary opponent Mark Peake (R), although VA Scope reported in December that they wouldn’t run against each other. [UPDATE: On 3/15, Newman said he wouldn’t run again for this seat, ceding it to Peake]
Tommy Norment (R-James City) – Appears to be running for reelection in the new SD26; possible primary opponent Ryan McDougle (R)
Mark Obenshain (R-Rockingham) – Running for reelection in the new SD02
Mark Peake (R-Lynchburg) – Possibly running for reelection in the new SD08; possible primary opponent Steve Newman (R); VA Scope reported in December that they wouldn’t run against each other. [UPDATE: On 3/15, Newman said he wouldn’t run again for this seat, ceding it to Peake]
Chap Petersen (D-Fairfax City) – Running for reelection in SD37; two Democratic primary opponents – Saddam Salim (announced on January 24) and Erika Yalowitz (announced on February 13)
Todd Pillion (R-Abingdon) – Running for reelection in the new SD06
Bryce Reeves (R-Amherst/Appomattox/etc.) – Running for reelection in the new SD28; primary against Mike Allers (R)
Aaron Rouse (D-Norfolk/VA Beach) – Running for reelection in the new SD22
Frank Ruff (R-Lunenburg/Mecklenburg/etc.) – Running for reelection in SD09
Dick Saslaw (D-Fairfax)Announced his retirement on 2/23; Sen. Dave Marsden and Heidi Drauschak are running for the new SD35.
Lionell Spruill, Sr. (D-Chesapeake) – Running for reelection in the new SD18; Democratic primary against Sen. Louise Lucas
Bill Stanley (R-Carroll/Franklin/etc.) – Running for reelection in the new SD07
Richard Stuart (R-King George/etc.) – Running for reelection in SD25
David Suetterlein (R-Salem/Beford/etc.) – Running for reelection in the new SD04, possibly against Sen. John Edwards (D) [UPDATE: Edwards announced on 2/27 that he’s retiring]
Scott Surovell (D-Fairfax) – Running for reelection in the new SD34
Jill Vogel (R-Winchester/Fauquier/etc.)Announced her retirement on 1/30; Republicans appear to be going with right-wing Republican Juan Pablo Segura in the new SD31, while Democrats are choosing between Russet Perry and Zach Cummings.

Delegates

Dawn Adams (D-Chesterfield/Henrico/Richmond) – Running in the Dems’ firehouse primary this Sunday for the State Senate District being vacated by Congresswoman-elect Jennifer McClellan; not 100% clear what Adams will do if she loses on Sunday (although note that the RTD reported that Adams said “she is not running for reelection in [the] new House district”; also, on 2/25, Adams announced that she won’t be returning to the House of Delegates).
Les Adams (R) – Running for reelection in the new HD48
Tim Anderson (R)Announced earlier this week that he’s not running for reelection. [UPDATED 4/4: Anderson announced that he will run for State Senate in solidly red SD19]
Terry Austin (R) – Running for reelection in the new HD37
John Avoli (R) – Not clear if he’s running for reelection in the new HD36 against Del. Ellen Campbell (R) or retiring. [UPDATE 2/25 – According to this, “Del. John Avoli announced Saturday he would not run for re-election in November.”]
Lamont Bagby (D-Henrico) – Running for State Senate for Sen. Jennifer McClellan’s soon-to-be-vacant seat; not clear what he’ll do if he doesn’t win the “firehouse primary” this Sunday. [UPDATE 2/27: Bagby won overwhelmingly and will be heading to the Senate after he wins the special election in late March; then there will need to be a special election for Bagby’s House of Delegates seat]
Jason Ballard (R) – Running for reelection in the new HD42
Amanda Batten (R) – Running for reelection in the new HD71
Rob Bell (R)Officially announced on 1/25 that he’s not running for reelection in the new/much-bluer HD55. One of two Democrats – Kellen Squire and Amy Laufer – will almost certainly be the next delegate from this district.
Elizabeth Bennett-Parker (D-Alexandria)  – Running for reelection in the new HD05
Rob Bloxom (R) – Running for reelection in the new HD100
Jeff Bourne (D-Richmond)Announced earlier this week that he’s not running for reelection.
Emily Brewer (R)  – Running for State Senate in the new SD17; Republican primary against Hermie Sadler, then the winner will face Democrat Clint Jenkins in November.
David Bulova (D-Fairfax) – Running for reelection in the new HD11
Kathy Byron (R)Running for reelection in the new HD52 [UPDATE: Announced on 2/26 that she’s NOT running for reelection after all]; Republican primary opponent Del. Wendell Walker
Ellen Campbell (R) – Running for reelection in the new HD36; possible Republican primary opponent John Avoli (although it sounds like he’s probably going to retire instead)
Jeff Campbell (R) – Running for reelection in the new HD46 [UPDATE 4/2: According to this article, “Del. Jeff Campbell, R-Smyth County, is retiring after a decade in the General Assembly. Just seven minutes after Campbell’s e-mailed announcement, his longtime legislative aide, Jed Arnold, declared his intention to seek the Republican nomination for the seat that covers Grayson, Smyth, and Wythe counties and part of Pulaski County.”]
Betsy Carr (D) – Running for reelection in the new HD78
Mike Cherry (R) – Running for reelection in the new HD74
Nadarius Clark (D)  – Running for reelection in the new HD84; Democratic primary opponent Michele Joyce
Kelly Convirs-Fowler (D)  – Appears not to be running for reelection. [UPDATED 3/4: In a somewhat surprising announcement, Convirs-Fowler said on 3/4 that she’s running for the solidly blue HD96 in Virginia Beach, where three other Democrats – Susan Hippen, Brandon Hutchins and Sean Monteiro – are already running. Should be interesting.]
A.C. Cordoza (R)  – Running for reelection in the new HD86
Carrie Coyner (R) – Running for reelection in the new HD75
Glenn Davis (R) – Either running for reelection in the new HD98 against fellow Republican Del. Barry Knight, or possibly moving to a position in the Youngkin Administration. [UPDATED 4/4: Davis announced he’s not running for reelection.]
Karrie Delaney (D-Fairfax)  – Running for reelection in the new HD09
Tara Durant (R) – Running for State Senate in the new SD27; Republican primary opponent Matt Strickland; possible Democratic opponent in the fall will be Joel Griffin, Ben Litchfield or Luke Radley Wright)
James Edmunds (R) Announced retirement on 2/24
Matthew Fariss (R)  – Running for reelection in the new HD51
Eileen Filler-Corn (D-Fairfax) – Presumed running for reelection in the new HD18; primary with Del. Kathy Tran (D) [UPDATED 3/7: Filler-Corn announces she’s NOT running for reelection, so Del. Tran has a clear path to reelection]
Buddy Fowler (R) – Running for reelection in the new HD59
Nick Freitas (R) – Running for reelection in the new HD62
Todd Gilbert (R) – Running for reelection in the new HD33
Jackie Glass (D-Norfolk) –  Running for reelection in the new HD93
